LDS Basketball Coaches, if Rice were to leave

If Dave Rice leaves, there will be a new opening in BYU's men's basketball program that a good kid like Nashif won't be able to fill alone. We've already seen Bronco Mendenhall invigorate the football program with the infusion of some great new young assistant coaches, like DuPaix and Cahoon. What (mostly) LDS coaches might be available out there to bring in as a new assistant, and potentially groom as the next head coach someday down the road? Dave Rose, a cancer survivor, is 53 years old. His contract was renegotiated this week with a pay increase to run through 2016.

-Heath Schroyer, ex-Wyoming head coach, former BYU assistant coach

-Mark Madsen, former-NBDL assistant coach (Working on his master's degree at Stanford. A lot of people around Provo would like to see Madsen hired to coach the big men, if assistant coach Dave Rice gets the UNLV job)

-Austin Ainge, former BYU player, son of Danny Ainge, currently coaching a small basketball team in Maine (the NBDL Red Claws)

I don't know if I have anything to really contribute, but I've always wondered why Jeff Judkins wasn't more involved with the men's team. I mean, wasn't he the one most repsonsible for bringing all that talent to the Yoots back in their glory days?

Rice wouldn't have to be replaced by an LDS coach. The pool is much larger than this.

If Dave Rice leaves... Rose HAS TO AVOID THIS TREND OF MOVING EVERYONE ON THE BENCH UP ONE SPOT

Austin Ainge has to be the 1st choice. He brings the name, the BYU pedigree, and he's now spent time coaching NBA caliber athletes. There's not a a bigger name or potential great recruiter on that list.

But...

I'd love to see Mad Dog come in and get the big men to bark a little.

Nick Robinson is a great friend to my family (we all grew up together) and I'd LOVE to see him at BYU (where he should have been 10 years ago as a player)

Although I like Austin Ainge, I'd like someone with a bit more experience. Austin played with Nashif after all and we don't need another guard as a coach. I'd prefer someone with some legit "big man" experience. Mark Madison sounds like a better choice to me. He's the best LDS player we've had in 15 years. But a good player doesn't always equal a good coach. Mark could though lace up the shoes and actually show the players a thing or two.

I think it would be ironic if Cleveland came back. He seemed to have a knack for establishing an inside presence, but I get the impression that Cleveland is ready to be done coaching.

I am in complete agreement that BYU shouldn't handle this by moving the assistants up a notch on the bench and hiring another recent grad to fill the vacant spot.

Terry Nashiff made Ben Murdock into a serviceable PG in the MWC and he's helped Jimmer to become the best player in the country. Nashiff knows how to coach.

Nashiff has always been a serious student of the game. He wasn't a great athlete, but he was smart ehough to be a pretty good player.

That's right, I forgot. When players succeed, it's always because of the player and his outside influences (brother, family, etc.) but when they fail it's because of the coaching, got it.

And don't forget, players who aren't contributors by the end of their freshman seasons should see the writing on the wall and move over for the younger and more talented players on the roster. And if you're not all-conference by the end of your sophomore season, you are a wasted scholarship and should be summarily dismissed for the team. And coaches who don't do this are crazy.

Glad to know Nick Robinson is LDS, makes watching that shot a little less painful to watch. He would make a great assistant but my vote would be for Mad Dog (help with big men is what we need) but we should always remember every college team has an African-American assistant coach. We do have Mike Hall as director of basketball ops but we need an assistant coach as well....so that is why I'd love to see Thurl since he would help the big men as well. But that is just dreaming on my part.

Regardless, guard play is up at BYU. Whether that has to do with the players or the coaches, who knows. Probably a combination of the two.

See this is why Utah should have gone after Rice. They would have had a great in with those players who don't meet the above BYU criteria!

I'm pretty sure not all the coaches listed are LDS. Giacoletti isn't for sure. I don't think Shroyer is either. That's just the one's off the top of my head.

I'll bet when Rice leaves he takes at least one of the other assistants with him, so maybe we don't have to choose just one coach, maybe we can pick a pair. Shroyer and Madsen would be my choices, but I don't know a lot of the coaches out there. Ainge is still a good get.
