Taysom Hill (HUGE GET) but what about the Riley rule?

I love this... we now have 4 quarterbacks that are either comitted or playing for BYU that are better than the best QB the Utes have.



Hill is an incredible athlete and is more like Steve Young than anyone we've had at the Y in a long time.



As has already been stated, his eligibility fits perfect with Heaps, Kuresa, Mangum!!

But here's the question.... how does the Riley rule affect Hill and his eligibility? (or does it?)

Yes, utah state will fight erroneously.

I'm hearing that the Riley rule doesn't apply because Hill had not yet attended Stanford (in that case every non BYU commit should leave on their mission right away so we can get them when they come back)



Hill is very fast 4.5 40 ... big arm (longest throw at the Stanford Nike camp)... and was 4 stars when he committed to Stanford.

Utah State was not happy when Riley Nelson switched commitments from Utah State to BYU. As best we know BYU didn't even contact him, it was all Riley (or his parents). BYU accepted his commitment. Utah State complained and got an NCAA rule change so that can't happen anymore. Basically committed missionaries are hands off no contact ever without approval from the committted school (and who would give it!)

If such a student-athlete has completed his or her official church mission and does not enroll full-time in a collegiate institution within one calendar year of completion of the mission, an institution may contact the student-athlete without obtaining permission from the first institution.

As I understand it, it just keeps schools from initiating contact with missionaries while they are on their missions so it ultimately works in our favor so other schools can't poach OUR players while serving missionaries. USU got all pissy over losing Nelson when BYU was never the one who made first contact. And when contact is made, it is always through the parents, not the missionary to see how interested the player really is in switching schools. So USU really just bit off their nose to spite their face.

ahh thanks, I was wondering what everyone was talking about. Interessting thought I just had USU throws a temper tamtrum after losing Riley vs. BYU moving on to Max Hall after the Ben Olsen incident. . . Guess that just shows the difference in attitude. USU loses good QB "No he can't do that! (he's our only chance to win). Change the rules" BYU loses good QB "Good luck Ben! (Max is better anyway)" :lol: small time vs big time 8)

You have to wonder if possibly Hill and Mangum are on board because Anae is not... Is this the Doman effect and are we actually in the middle of the greatest run of BYU QBs in history? (Beck, Hall, Heaps, Hill, Kuresa, Mangum)

no not yet. We need a national championship, a bunch of baugh/O'brian awards, a hiseman, about 5 all-americans and then our OQ's to wrap up several superbowls/ NLF MVP's to equal the 80's/early 90's. Don't mean we can't make the 10's better 'though. :evil:

In addition to limiting contact with missionaries, it also prevents players who attend one university, go on a mission and transfer to another university following the mission from playing immediately.



Previously, the two years away counted as sitting out a year, but the player didn't lose any eligibility. Now they still have to sit out a year before being eligible to play.

^^^ Could be very beneficial to have Doman running the show on O. We'll see, but it seems the recruits already like the change.

I am sure part of it may be that Stanford is ok with the transfer. Not sure if they need to be or not, but Harbaugh supposedly put together a solid stable of QBs before he left to the 49ers, so the new coach may be just fine with it and happy to have a schollie open up. Dallas Lloyd also commit to Stanford and left on a mission before enrolling there as well, and he should be back end of 2012. So who knows what happens.

I watched Taysom play in Pocatello several years ago. Went to the ISU mini-dome and was impressed. He played offense, defense, and did some kicking. He seemed to be the best athlete with good size and speed. I recall he would kick off and plant the ball pretty deep into opponents territory. After the first kick off, there was some complaining amongst the fans. It involved Tysom. On the next kickoff, I specifically watch Taysom rather than the flight of the football after the kickoff. The opponents sent a big linebacker sized player to hit Taysom in the legs right after he kicked. The next time he kicked, Taysom's coach had one of his better players protect Taysom by sending his teammate squarely at the opponent, whose intend seemed to be to take Taysom out of the game. The teammate nailed the dude in the legs pretty good... so good, in fact, that the opponent was limping and motioning to be taken out of the game. I was impressed with the kid........

To be fair, I think there were plenty of BYU fans that got pissy about "Benedict" Olsen leaving for UCLA. I was certainly one of them.



In hindsight of course it worked out very well for BYU, but at the time I definitely felt betrayed.

I was talking about the institutions not the fans. Fans are always a little more extreme ;)

Of course you felt betrayed, because you were betrayed. Olsen gave an interview before leaving on his mission and was asked if there was anything he wanted to say to BYU fans. He said, don't worry, I'm coming back.

Players come and go. 1 player rarely makes the difference in a season, so if a kid leaves, best of luck to him, chance for another to step up. When one heads in--great, let's hope he contributes. Recruiting is not an exact science, so even highly regarded kids bust out. What I look for is depth, though, so when kids leave and it hurts depth, that peturbs me, but not the fat 1 kid left.



Bronco is doing a great job--seemingly--at building great depth. LaVell had it at QB for years, but not in many other places, especially defense. So this new depth is great.

The Riley rule is a two edged sword, and I have no opinion on it, but I believe it will not endure. Locking some kid to his old school for three years of non-playing is absurd. Some non-LDS athlete is going to get caught in this and say "what the hey?" and it will be changed.
