Emery and Haws 2

My cousin goes to Lone Peak and is friends with both of them. He hung out with them recently and recanted this story to me. Apparently both of them started on Lone Peak's state championship team this year and are both out of this world good. I quote ... Emery ... I believe, "We can't wait to play at BYU together. We're gonna dominate."

Was anybody worried we weren't going to get these kids?

I really think these two were coming regardless, but BYU will start to lose some in state kids due to Utah entering the Pac 12, and not all of them to Utah.

Those kids would be tremendous players to watch for fans, can't wait to have them win big in front of 22,000 while "other" utah kids go to that pac-12 team and end up transferring after 1 or 2 year...err, coaches.

The only in-state kids BYU will lose to Utah will not be because of the the Ute's Pac-12 association, it will be because of the Honor Code. BYU will only lose the kids from Utah that don't want to live the Honor Code. BYU will still get the kids that want to try to live the Honor Code.



BYU will continue to dominate in-state recruiting for the foreseeable future.

I KNEW there was something wrong with the way that word looked when I wrote it. Worst part? English major. Yup. Guess that explains my grades.

since you opened the door on proper usage, let me walk in and say that there are actually two errors in diction in this string. The first post reports that a cousin "recants" this story about these two promising players. 'probably should be "recounts." I hope these guys are not "recanting" on the idea of playing in Provo. Secondly, a poster above asks what someone is "trying to infer." He probably means "imply." Some folks use the verb "infer" to say that something is trying to suggest or make some sort of reference. Actually when you "infer," you are drawing conclusions on what someone said. When you are the one making the assertion, you "imply." One of my profs said it this way: "'imply' is the pitcher; 'infer' is the catcher."



That out of the way, it sounds like it would be wonderful to have another Emery and another Haws in the program.



Go Cougs, and forgive me if my thoughts on grammer rub some the wrong way.

I think BYU will lose some in-state LDS kids to UCLA and maybe Stanford, if they don't continue to suck, when they wouldn't have before. Those schools never had a reason to come to Utah before for recruiting purposes, and had little to offer. Now, they can offer that their parents can see them every year at home.



I do think that as long as Rose is at BYU he will win many more battles than he will lose.

For what it's worth I've heard rumors on other boards that Emery is also very interested in UCLA. Now, from my cousin's RECOUNTING that doesn't seem to be a problem, but I've talked to Carlino about his experience at UCLA and that might be able to help us. Carlino HATED it there. He cussed them out pretty good. So I don't know if he would have any sway if it came down to it, but you never know.

Interesting. Can you give some detail on CArlino's complaint? What is it about UCLA that he hated?

You know what? Specifically he mentioned the other players, so that might not really sway anyone as to whether they should go there or not. I don't recall any kind of a knock on the actual institution itself.

Depends. If Utah stays in the bottom half or the Pac 12 like it's projected to and can't get to the NCAA tourney than I don't see us losing any recruits. If I'm one of the best players in Utah and I'm willing to live the HC and Utah isn't going dancing while BYU is every year why wouldn't I chose BYU, especially now that games will be aired on ESPN.



If BYU put together a few more Sweet 16 runs in the next few years than I think we'll start to see more kids "willing" to live the HC and our recruiting pool won't be so Utah dependent. In a few years we may not mind losing the top Utah players because we'll be grabbing more guys like Demarcus Harrison.



Joining the WCC gives BYU the opportunity to go into different regions, like the Bay Area, and tell parents they'll be able to see their son play every year 3 times. Keep in mind there are more LDS kids in California than there are in Utah.
