BYU Finishes 13th in the polls

I'm sorry, but no one will convince me that a tournament run means you look completely past teams having 10 and 11 lossses. It means what it means and that is that you peaked at a point in the season that gave you the great results, but how do you suddenly act as though all the other part of the season did not happen?



They need a final poll that reflects the tournament and one that reflects the whole season. Butler reaching the NC game is wonderful and should be acknowledged the same as VCU making the Final Four, but I can't turn my head on the whole season and act like Butler didn't lose nine games and VCU eleven during their seasons.

This is why post-season tournaments are dumb and don't tell you who the best team of the season was. They tell you who the best team over a few games/weeks is. They render the regular season meaningless. European soccer does it right. There are no playoffs. Everyone plays everyone twice. The winner is the winner. If you win, then you next year you get to play a second season at the same time (your normal league and then champions league) to see who the best team on the continent is.

UEFA Champions League soccer is awesome. Tonight I'll be watching a recording of my favorite EPL team (Tottenham Hotspur) play Real Madrid, then right after that I'll be watching the live broadcast of Real Salt Lake playing Deportivo Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions League. Can't wait.

I think teams can improve during the season. At the beginning of the year Butler was not very good. Now I think they can take on anyone. I think the poll should be who are the best teams as of today. butler is top 10. I think we are top 10 too. We could beat anyone. The big question is do you include injured and suspended players in your evaluation.

Again, it depends on what you are trying to do. If you want to say who had the best season, then sure, don't have a tournament at all, or even any bowl games for that matter. But, if you're playing to win a championship, the regular season is important because it determines who gets in and where they're seeded (just ask the bubble teams who didn't make the tourney if the regular season is important or not). On top of all that, there's a reason it's called the REGULAR season, because it's just that -- regular, normal, anticlimactic.

So then the post-season is after the season and therefore not a part of the actual season, ergo it is irrelevant and unncessary.

No, it's MORE important than the season, it's what the season leads up to. :D

Granted, but we were a top 10 team pre tournament, we went to the Sweet 16 and lost in OT and we're bounced clear back to 13. I could have expected that had we lost, but I'm very disappointed that despite making the Sweet 16 we dropped that far.

How long has it been since BYU finished in the top 15? 1981?

As I see it all the "season" is for is to prepare and qualify you for the playoffs. The final standings should reflect actual playoff accomplishment earned on the court. As long as we are in the top 9 to 16 we are OK because we made the Sweet 16. We can always debate who may or may not have been a better team then those in the final four and who may or may not be better than UConn (at that point it becomes a beauty contest) but there is no debate as to who was there and who won. arguement over!
