Jimmer has another POY award for the mantle, Adolph Rupp

Jimmer is awarded the Adolph Rupp Award National Player of the Year award.

Congrats to Jimmer and thanks to Jay Drew for the announcement.

Adloph Rupp was John Wooden before John Wooden... the last couple of awards that Jimmer has gotten may not be as high profile as some others, but the namesake(s) is just as impressive; Oscar Robertson and Adolph Rupp are both arguably in the top 5 in history for what they did in the college game.

Jimmer is going to need a very large trophy room at this rate.

Well hopefully like Detmer's Heisman, some of the trophys end up in the BYU sports center hall of fame so we can all behold them.

Excuse me for jumping in here but my father played for Adolph Rupp and my cousin was a 3 time all American with a National championship in 1958 at UK under Coach Rupp. I know you said the flick was great but anyone who knew Coach Rupp would tell you they way, way overplayed the racist part purely to sell tickets. It's considered pure fiction around here, I've seen interviews of the guys who played in the game to include Pat Riley of LA Laker fame and they to a man said that race played no part in the game, it was our 5 guys and their 5 guys and that day UK got beat.

Anyway by any measure Adolph Rupp is a coaching legend and it's a great honor for the Jimmer to win this award as the best player in college basketball. Plus, since it's given in Lexington KY, I'm sure they didn't want to give it to Walker the week before they play UConn ;)

Yeah, he unjustly plays "the racist character".

What I meant to say is that this obviously isn't one of the "Big Four" awards. In fact, I don't know if it was ever talked about until the day it was announced. Not so with the Wooden, Naismith, etc.

I am sure that much of the movie was sensationalized for Hollywood. Hoosiers was the same. Like Dennis Hopper's "Shooter", the drunk assistant coach... we had way more than one of those. ;)

It's good to hear from your family that Rupp wasn't as bigoted as was portrayed. I think Hollywood was trying to convey a prevailing attitude and chose that character to wear the banner.

Just an additional note for anyone who cares, a good friend of mine who is a member of the Church and former UK basketball announcer got permission from the Rupp family to have his Temple work done for him. Coach Rupp had his rough side but he had a lot of respect for my cousin and my dad and their beliefs so I'm glad his family gave permission for that. I'm sure there are a lot of evangelicals here in KY who would think it sacrilege and an abomination if they knew. ;)
