I gotta say I was very surprised to see Rick Reilly write such trash. Way to kick a great player when hes down. Funny how he sweeps Jimmers whole season under the rug but instead bases his whole season off one game. Pathetic. Guess haters will always be haters!

I'm trying to figure out what Martineau was trying to say.

Somebody who has the quick access to stats, bring up the worst game of the year for any of the other POY candidates/ compare. This piece of trash writer could have written the same article about any of the greats of history right after a bad game.

I just read it and was about to come post it here. I'm not surprised based on his "BYU has an unfair advantage because of missionary program" back in 2001. However, it is disgusting that he can't hide his apparent hatred for BYU in this article.

He takes one game by Jimmer and says that is who he is and takes Ainge's coast to coast against ND as who he is, Danny Clutch. He has the benefit of hindsight and can see a great nba career for Danny. Can we make him eat his words when Jimmer has a good nba career and doesn't just eek out a living like Rick implies? What a tool. Really classy to pick on this kid after one of his worst performances of the season and in a game that wasn't a blow out like he implies simply by the fact that it went in to overtime.

get a life Rick!

This is the exact time to use the word douche really applies.

Um dude St. Mary's 11 sec Jimmer hits a 3 to win it. Last year in OT vs Fla he scores a bazzillion points, countless times this season when he scored nearly every point to close out a game including against SDSU! DOUCHE!!! I'm calling you out! As for his YMCA hops, a 36" vertical is pretty impressive dude and now try to imagine a tweaked calf and trying to go that high. Imagine your 3/4 inch verticle and you having a tweak. Again DOUCHE!!!!

That article is full of piss and vinegar and Rick should be writing a retraction right now. I'll say "I'm sorry" on behalf of Jimmer for not "impressing" you last night. Maybe you should pull your head out and realize that BYU nearly won that game, it went into OT you idiot! And that is with Jimmer not having his 50% from 3 game going. What a piece of work!

Hey Rick I saw another NOBODY who flubbed at Dallas in the NBA. He only had 23pts in a loss to Dallas. 5-19 .263 5 turnovers and just literally stunk it up. They should kick him from the NBA. I mean this Labron guy just sucked! Get rid of him, he's no good.

Against Maryland he had almost an identical stat line too, except he scored 7 pts, 0 Rebounds, 2 Assists, and 5 TOs.

His game against AZ: 8 pts, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 6 TOs

Now Coln Coward is chiming in with his 2 cents about how he is no Kemba. No colon he is not Kemba, he is better than Kemba. How many defenses were scripted just to stop him? JImmer faced it ALL SEASON LONG. Amazing how the haters are coming out of the woodwork! DOUCHE!!!

Rick Reilly usually has a great sense of humor article. I don't agree with his opinions all the time, but he's always gives a good laugh. This was terrible . . . I truthfully think this was the only game the guy watched.

Great fireback by Shepherd. But who reads Shepherd? Reily? I dont know.

At any rate, Reily is as Shepherd says an opportunistic writer and in this case a schmucky one, but he is also part of the anti-Jimmer for POY/ Jimmer-hater crowd. He and Bilas are lllllllloser/panderers.

But, then again, aren't these the type of Jimmer doubters/haters that keep providing additional fire for Jimmer to rise-up?

Reilly probably had this written weeks ago and was just waiting for BYU to lose. If we had lost to Gonzaga, that would have been the one game he saw Jimmer play. If we had lost to Wofford, that would have been the one game he saw Jimmer play.

He probably wrote it after the last UNM loss and tucked it away. He couldn't release it after the WYO or TCU wins and then Jimmer went Jimmer on UNM in the semis. I'm surprised he didn't release the article after losing to SDSU in the MWC finals, but the 52-point game was probably too fresh in everyone's mind.

As was said, what is most wrong with the article is the timing. So Jimmer's not Pete Maravich? Who is? So Jimmer's not Danny Ainge? Who is? What Jimmer is, is a guy who gets picked up with a double team at half court and still drops 30 on teams. Jimmer never got a chance to hit the game winner against Florida and it's his fault?

Did Jimmer's defense get worse over his career? I think it did inversely proportional to his shouldering of the scoring responsibility. He had good AST/TO ratios his first three years and I think he'll be a better defender in the NBA - or at least give more effort since his team won't be as scoring dependent.

It seems the standard Jimmer is being held to is that he's not going to be a first-team NBAer next year. He'll be like most pros. Get them in the right situation and they can be successful. Wrong team, wrong coach and your career flounders.

He's going to be like Kurt Warner. Get him a Dick Vermeil and the Rams or Wisenhunt on the Cardinals and he's outstanding. Put him with Coughlin and the Giants and he looks awful. Jimmer's NBA career is going to be largely determined by his circumstances.

Reilly says that Jimmer too 29 shots to get to 32 points and that it was way too many.

Anyone know how many shots Pete Maravich averaged? Just a measely 38.1 FGA/game. Oh and Maravich's teams weren't good. He went 14-12, 13-13 and 20-8. Jimmer went 32-5, 30-6, 25-8 and 27-8.

As rude and spiteful as Reilly was toward Jimmer, the part I am most offended by is his not-so-veiled bigotry that masquerades as sports opinion. And the fact that ESPN gave him an international podium with a megaphone. That's just irresponsible journalism.

Rick Reilly has never had anything nice to say about BYU, whether it is claiming that missionary service gives BYU an unfair advantage in athletics to the article he wrote on Jimmer. Words don't change the truth of what we all witnessed this year: a player of remarkable ability, tenacity and character. Jimmer will go far, Reilly's hatchets notwitstanding. Reilly's article says more about his ignorance and agenda than it does of Jimmer and what he accomplished.

Here's my reply to Rick Reilly:

Rick,

You make a living for your shock value at the expense of athletes who give blood, sweat and tears on the field of battle. You thrive on the attention you create by your bold criticisms.

You were right in your assessment of Fredette in this particular game (although your criticisms lack appropriate context), but your writing profoundly disrespects his body of work and the impact he has had on his team, his conference and, truthfully, the entire nation of college basketball fans this year. It is really a cowardly cheap shot to be among the first to kick a kid, whose skills were used to their fullest to garner Sportscenter ratings by ESPN throughout the season, after his worst shooting night of his career.

In the end, sportswriters like you will come and go, and no one will really know when you are gone. However, long after you're gone, Fredette's jersey will be hanging in the rafters in the Marriott Center, and fans will be telling their kids stories about the magical season that Jimmer helped create. Meanwhile, we don't build monuments to critics, so enjoy the few minutes of buzz your writing has created, it really just makes you look biased and ignorant, and ultimately it hurts your credibility as a serious writer.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I can see Jimmer printing Rick's and Colon's articles and pasting them to his bathroom mirror (do it Jimmer). And when he makes his first NBA allstart game he can let the whole world see some of the motivation that made him who he is!
