Boynton Not Going to Guard Jimmer

Interesting article on ESPN.com. Coach Donovan says he isn't going to have Boynton guard Jimmer because he doesn't want to wear Boynton out (apparently it has nothing to do with the ankle). Instead, Florida will rotate two freshman on Jimmer (6'2" Scottie Wilbekin and 6'6" Casey Prather). Apparently these two have "shown a knack for defense." I hope they brought a pen and some paper because they're going to get schooled.



From the article it sounds like Donovan is going to play BYU much like SDSU did. They know Jimmer will get his points; so, they will key in on stopping the other guys. If our guys play like they did against SDSU in MWC Tourney, then Donovan's scheme will work. If our guys, including Jimmer, play like they did against UNM and Gonzaga, then Florida is going to have a tough time.

I imagine Florida will try to get an inside/out game going for them. Between their two 6'10" forwards (11 ppg) and their two guards (14 ppg) that's a solid game plan. We'll likely collapse on the middle to try and contain their big men, which could leave their guards open. This makes me a bit nervous, as we've struggled covering inside/out in the past.



Florida has four players averaging double figures, which means we'll have to play some tight D (good news is our D is better this year). I imagine we'll switch it up between zone and man-to-man similar to how we did against Gonzaga, favoring the zone though.

Jackson can shut down their outside game, and it is down to Noah, Anderson, Charles, to shut their inside down.

I don't think we need to shut down their inside game, just make it difficult like we did against GU. They will outscore us in the paint, but we need to make them work for it then run them when we have the ball and score like we can.

Exactly. They'll get some easy buckets here and there in the paint, but we just can't let them get going from the outside. Charles will stick Parsons and Emery will shut down any shooters (Walker and/or Boynton). I don't know how much zone we'd play against these guys but that defense has been dominant when the team is energized like they were vs Wofford and Gonzaga. As long as people are flying around on D I think we'll get the stops we need.

Yeah, Boynton won't guard Jimmer, and neither will anyone else, they can only try.

Well rotating in the freshman for defense will hurt them on the offensive end.



obouo needs to stay out of fould troulbe and in the game. same with hartsock. when those two are in the defense is MUCH better. especially obouo.



If florida is hot from three point land we will lose.

I don't understand why people think that the Aztecs scheme is the way to go. The record for Jimmer vs the Aztecs over the last 3 seasons is 6-2, with both losses coming in the conference tournament. Billy White was part of the 4 people that tried to guard him when he went for 43 (I believe he guarded him most of that night).



People need to follow the UNM way of guarding Jimmer/BYU. BYU is 2-5 vs UNM the last 3 years. Man to man with your best defender (I don't think Boynton or Willis are as good of defenders as Gary from UNM, and he's probably much better than any freshman on Florida's team), don't pick him up full court all the time (just let's him set the defender up), trap the ball screens hard and rotate behind it (committing 3 guys ball screen defense, but don't send it from the same place all the time), and actually try and force him left (not as big of a factor this year as opposed to last year). Yes, I know he went for 34, 34 and 52, but the he was far from efficient in getting the 34 and 34, and the defense was much better on the other players. When he went for 52, there is no defensive strategy that could combat him that night.



The Florida offense has some similarities to the BYU offense, relying heavily on ball-screens and using the guards/wings as the primary scorers. They do have a couple of bigs that can score the ball, but more like Hartsock, less like Davies.
