Bronco is very media savvy

Bronco made comments as spring football opened up that seems to have pacified everyone that Heaps has locked up the no. 1 QB spot. But he never said that.



"The quarterback competition is still open. Yet, somehow, while still being noncommittal about a 2011 starter, Mendenhall found a way to diffuse this issue without saying anything substantive or conclusive."

I think it's quite clear that Jake Heaps is the starter and will take a Herculean effort to supplant him. I think you're reaching at straws and trying to find controversy where there is none.



Heaps is the starter. He will be allowed more mistakes. In order for him NOT to be the starter he will have to play poorly in spring AND someone else (Nelson, Lark) will have to be exceptional. Both of those things have to happen. One will not be sufficient.

I think the headline should be "Bronco knows how to handle his players."



Jake is the clear starter. Look at the # of reps in spring ball. That fact alone tells the story. But Bronco is also making sure Heaps understand that other guys wants his job and are working hard to get it. Jake is the best QB we have, but psychologically, it is important for any player to know that someone is breathing down their necks for a place--even when no one is. That edge and competition is like a refiner's fire that make you better. Every player at every position needs competition for that exact reason. So Bronco played it perfectly. And not in regards to the media, but in regards to his players.

Agree about Heaps as the starter, but to say he IS the starter for Ole Miss, and the QB spot has NO competition is to put words into Mendenhall's mouth, which is what everyone is doing.

How is this looking for controversy where there is none? Only positive and complimentary towards Mendenhall and what he has done.

Because for all intents and purposes the competition is not open. It will only be open Jake opens it. That's being the starter going into spring ball means. It doesn't open competition. It means selective competition.
