Calling the BYU-Florida game.



Here's hoping that Jimmer and crew can put on a show that will allow Johnson to equal or surpass his Xavier-KState performance, which was (IMO) probably the best performance by a NCAA hoops announcer ever.

Gus Johnson is really, really good at what he does.

Ehh... I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not that crazy about Gus Johnson. I feel like he goes nuts over every little thing. I guess hearing him call NFL games has ruined him for me. CUTLER BACK, DOWN THE SIDELINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, He overthrew him by 15 yards, wasn't even close to a completion. Hopefully after Jimmer drops another 35 on Florida, Gus can get back in my good graces!!! 8)

I was noticing the same thing last night when I was listening to call one of his games. A bit much at times.

I guess some people like the way he calls games. I really don't pay attention much I guess, though I did like the way Vern was calling our game with Gonzaga.

I think the game itself creates the drama, not the excitement of the announcer. However, when things get crazy at the end, an over-the-top announcer does it justice. So for close, tight games down the stretch, Gus and Dickie V are best because they both get hysterical.

Love the sound board! Got a few funny looks from the coworkers!

I still say nothin' will beat Wrubell's call of Jimmer's shot to end the first half of the Utah game!!!

So I was finishing up at Quicken Loans Arena late Sunday when most everybody's favorite play-by-play guy, Gus Johnson, walked by after a long day of calling games -- first Ohio State's win over George Mason, then Marquette's win over Syracuse. I said hello and asked where he's headed next. "New Orleans," Gus said. "Me, too," I told him. Then Gus smiled and said, "We got Jimmer." I knew exactly what he meant, and I feel the same way. Fredette has become the face (and name) of college basketball this season. That he's still playing is great for everybody ... except Gonzaga's Mark Few and, perhaps, Florida's Billy Donovan.

Some of us are excited to have Gus Johnson. Gus Johnson is excited to have Jimmer.

It's funny to talk about overreaction, when we have one of the (best, but) most over reactionary callers for BYU on radio. Wrubell is so far over the top it is funny, sometimes.



"Here's Jimmer walking down the court... HE IS DRIBBLING THE BALL!!! HE IS BREATHING!!!"



"he rises from 30...... **DEAFNESS** " (I'm not sure what happened after "rises from 30....", because I just hear a piercing shriek of sound compression that has the same effect as a concussion grenade.)



I kid, I love Wrubell, and he is very good. Very Emotional, though...

I've been critical of Wrubell's calls at times too. Both Gus and Greg are very good at what they do. But do go too far sometimes.

I prefer an announcer who gets a little excited to one who seems bored or disinterested in the game.

I prefer an announcer who stays on the game and doesn't get distracted for 5-10 min. Stretches talking about and to every famous or infamous person in attendance . . . Ala las Vegas bowls on ESPN, pick any.

What if the famous person is THE JIMMER?

I agree with the point about getting distracted. Sometimes they get involved with a "guest" and forget to talk about the game at all for a while. That is EXTREMELY annoying.



That said, I don't think I've ever enjoyed any announcer more than Wrubell. When he gets "overly excited", it just amplifies what I'm feeling anyway. I just wish I could listen at the same time as watching. Unfortunately, there's too much time lag between TV and internet radio.



I've made it a practice to listen to the replays of the games on ksl.com the day after the game (except when they lose, which hasn't been often this year). Great getting the perspective of the radio announcers compared with what I saw on TV.



I notice that other than post-game, there are no recordings of the tournament games available. Does the NCAA have some restrictions here?

I had to leave during the last half of the UNM game in the tourney, and so I listened to the radio, and it was like an entirely different game was happening.



I believe that game was on the MTN :sick: and their uninterested, anti byu rhetoric. Then, hopping in the car and listening to Wrubell (iirc Jimmer went off for 52 that night) was such a radical shift of emotions.



It was like going from the hot tub to the pool, then jumping back into the hot tub again. But with my ears... Weird experience (but great game!)

That game was on CBS College Sports, and Steve Lappas is one of the few announcers anywhere that is pro-BYU. He always points out that people shouldn't try to run with BYU because that is what they want to do. He's very complimentary of Dave Rose, Fredette, and goes out of his way to praise Emery and Davies.



I often wonder what would have happened if the MWC had decided to not create the mtn and just tried putting more games on CSTV/CBS College Sports and VS.

Yeah CBS is pretty good, even in their off stations. Any time I hear the game is on VS or CBS, I breathe a little sigh of relief.
