WCC Has Class

WCC Commisioner, Jamie Zaninovich, tweet:

How great is it to have conference that actually appreciates you?



Not being Cougar egocentrical, but BYU brings probably more to the WCC than they can give us, but just the fact that you feel like part of the family, and its a family with class, means a lot.

This after MWC congrats SDSU.

I think part of it is familiarity with teams, and issues with teh league. Things are not great between BYU and the MWC, so it is not surprising. I have zero problem with it. We are the ones leaving, so I do not care what the MWC does, says or does not do or say. We left them. For a reason.



As to the WCC, fans have had no reason to hate on them before because we did not play them in league games. I hope fans are less critical of them than they have been about SDSU, UNM, Utah, etc over the years because we enter as the big kid on the block, so I hope we act gracious to our new conference rivals while we beat them regularly. They are excited to get us, but it will change after repeated losses at our hands.

I think the WCC is going to be a great fit for BYU and I am very excited about next season's MBB -- I think the WCC will be a 3 bid league on a regular basis.



And without the animosity that arises from getting beat down in football for decades, the rest of the WCC can appreciate the great increased exposure and revenue that comes from having BYU in the conference -- unlike the MWC (or the WAC before that) which jumped on BYU's back for exposure and money but hated BYU for everything else....

BYU (and its fans) are some of the best "generous winners" out there. I'm not concerned about that at all. We get mean when others get mean, but in general we are very good.



Though regular beat downs will sour their attitude towards us a little, I think it all comes from the top down. If the commish sends a good vibe to the AD's, they take that to the coaches and to the players.



We are only going to be there for a few years anyways, so it's not going to have a long time to fester like old-WAC teams/relations did.

I sincerely and respectfully doubt that. As soon as the Big 12 comes calling for us in football, we will jump in for all sports, if it is financially viable, and better exposure for the church.

I think with religious tolerance, WCC has the upper hand. BYU will never have to worry about the Sunday play issue in the WCC.

BYU being able to call the shots, WCC gets the upper hand. (If BYU joins big XII they will immediately become the littlest of the brothers and will suffer what utah will have to go through for the next decade)

BYU being able to not get tied into another TV contract where BYU is seen once every other month nationally (aka exposure), WCC has the upper hand.



As far as football, I think BYU is content to see how things pan out with independence before they make any moves, including jumping to the next BCS conference that gives us an invite. BYU isn't desperate, they did their homework before going independent and hopefully they stay that way. BYU has shown in the last year that they actually will be just fine without a conference. They put eyes on the TV when they are playing.



I'd love to see BYU stay independent in football, call their own shots, and do well vs. the best teams in the country. I think that conferences are overrated in this day and age. We've seen that during this big east meltdown in the dance and the BCS eventually will come to an end, just matter of time. BYU could be WAY ahead of the curve when everything falls apart and teams like duke, syracuse, vanderbilt may no longer be able to afford propping up their weak sauce programs without their conferences' support.



just saying that before we all start wishing/hoping/figuring that BYU joins the next autobid conference that comes calling, enjoy the ride for a while. It may be the best situation BYU could wish for.

I've BYU is excited to be amongst peers. The president of BYU is a member of the seventy and many/most of the WCC school presidents are similar senior religious leaders.



I don't think we would go to the Big 12 now. And I'm not sure the Big 12 will make Sunday-play allowances like the WCC is.



I think we're going to enjoy the control we have and will stand pat for a good long time.

Oh, I have no problem with Independence. If you've seen anything I have posted on the subject, I would rather be independent calling our own shots, then in the Utes position, taking no money to be part of a very overrated conference.



But the Big 12 makes a lot of money, and has a huge amount of exposure/respect (in football - the $ sport) and if they call, we better pick up the phone to at least see what they have to say. BYU is putting itself in a very good position, as long as they keep winning and stay relevant. It is one of those "best options" sort of scenarios.

Honestly, I think the BigXII would have to come to BYU on it's knees begging to get BYU to make the jump. Something I doubt Texas would allow.

Actually, I see Texas going independent in football before I see BYU joining the Big12. I think BYU independence is going to be a windfall and some of the bigger programs will be taking note.

I agree to that.



The insurance that BYU has joining a conference is if they decide to do the 4 Mega-conference option they tried to pull off last offseason. If they accomplish that, there is your post season playoffs, and BYU is the odd man out. (Take the top 2 teams from each conference - each division - and have an 8 team playoff for the NC)



I would imagine that BYU would hear about that sort of thing before it all shakes down, but things got awfully scary last year...

The Big XII doesn't have equal revenue sharing for current members. BYU would most certainly take a pay cut.

Is a pay cut always a bad thing?



I have a friend who was making well into the six figures in the gaming industry when his company asked him to become a manager. He would have been a great manager, but he wanted to design games. They told him he had to become a manager or quit. He quite and found a job making barely over $100K a year. He loved his job and he had a passion for it.



Sometimes a pay cut isn't a bad thing.
