Diggs post game comment

"One of the best players that I've guarded all year"



This kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Anyone else catch this comment? Who would he have guarded this year that can compare to "The Jimmer"?

I caught that too. So he gave up 32 to other players too?

Supposedly his mom's maiden name is Willis ;)

Did you expect him to say he was the best? Cause honestly... I didn't think he was last night.



Jimmer is gonna have to out up at least 30 points every game, if we wanna stay in this tourney.



Don't get me wrong, cause he was good. He should have had more assists, but he can't control if those players make their shots or not.

Per the AP report:



"He's a great player, great scorer. One of best players I guarded all year. He's really deceptive quick, you think you're in front of him and he's by you. He's quick and unlimited range. Tough matchup."



I didn't take the wording of "one" of the best as any dig (doin a Tre'Von) on Jimmer. Probably the best word to use in a presser as you don't either want to alienate those others you have played by throwing them under the bus.



Not everyone talks like Max Hall and lets you know exactly his feelings ("I hate Utah" rant).

I acknowledge that Jimmer wasn't on his A+ game last night and that his shooting % was lower than his average, but he either scored or assisted on all but 7 of BYU's fg's last night.



Diggs' comment felt like a cut on Jimmer to me. If he would have said "one of the best ever" or "probably the best", I don't think it would have felt like sour grapes.

I believe his "reference" was to Andrew Goudelock, Sr guard, College of Charleston. He's the best player in the Southern conference. Wofford played them three times during the season and Diggs held him below his average (23.4) in each game, "according to him". He actually scored 18, 25, and 25 in those games, so he "held him" .7 below his average.



Goudelock is a decent scorer, I agree, at #5 in the nation. He put up 27 at Maryland, 28 at North Carolina, 21 vs Clemson, and 31 at Tennessee. Thats 26.75 average against good competition. Three season highs were 39, 34, and 33 against Dayton, Elon, and Davidson respectively. Shoots 45.91% FG, 81.74% FT, 41.2% 3PT, 4.3 Assist/Game, and 3.9 reb/game.



For comparison: Jimmer 3 season highs 52, 47, 43 Shoots 45.44% FG, 88.89% FT, 39.86% 3PT, 4.3 Assist/Game, and 3.5 reb/game. Very similar statistically.



But, Jimmer is a way better player than Goudelock. Yes Andrew is a scorer and a good one at that, but there are dozens of those all over the league. Jimmer is more than that. Fredette had an off night in the Wofford game, and I can see where Diggs can make the comparison.



But, really, there is no comparison.... 8)

Funny, I took this comment completely the other direction in giving Jimmer a lot of praise, especially considering the pre game comments on how they were going to play him straight up, they could shut him down and how glad they were playing BYU and not a "good" team from the Big East. To me this is Diggs saying to Jimmer, good job, we didn't really appreciate how good you are.

Much ado about nothing.

I retract. I hadn't seen his entire quote. The AP pulled out only the "one of the best players I have guarded this season" and left out the surrounding positives. I now believe that Diggs was giving credit where credit was due. Jimmer really filled the stat sheet last night. Here's to him doing it again tomorrow!

The players were probably all annoyed that all the questions at the press conference were about Jimmer. I would be, too.
