Rose Named a Naismith Coach of the Year Finalist

Sixth-year head coach Dave Rose has led the BYU basketball to a 30-4 record and a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title with San Diego State (14-2 league mark). The 30 victories tie a program record for wins set last season and nine-straight weeks in the top 10 is also a program first. The conference title marks the fourth in six years and in the two seasons BYU has not won the conference title under Rose, the Cougars have finished second place in the league standings. Under Rose’s direction, BYU is the only program in the country to earn both academic recognition from the NCAA and a tournament bid in each of the last four seasons. The Cougars boast the No. 3 seed in the Southeast Region in the NCAA Men’s Division I Championship.

Thanks Urroner for posting this. I had seen this same announcement at ksl.com. Great for Coach Rose. However, there was something listed in Steve Fisher's bio that greatly disturbs me. The article, in writing about Coach Fisher, states:

He also led the team to a MWC Tournament championship, and for his efforts was named the 2011 MWC Coach of the Year.

No mention was made in the article about Rose being named as MWC co-coach of the year. I fear that to some outside reader or voter, somebody could easily be misled by this information. How easy is it to dismiss Kemba Walker as national POY when he didn't even get Big East player of the year? This same logic could easily, albeit erroroneously, be applied to Dave Rose.

This is great news. Being a finalist is quite an honor given how many other fine programs there have been this season.



Congrats Coach Rose and take no prisoners the next 3 weeks.

It's good to know that people outside of the MWC are noticing the positive effect that Rose is having on the program and basketball in general. It's a great honor, but also well deserved.

I think it should also say something about being top 10 or top 5 in winning percentage among active coaches or something like that.
