New Coach For Pukes

Is anyone else worried about the fact that the Pukes are without a BB coach and it's not in the headlines?



The first and easiest guess is that it's just because it's the first week of the NCAA tournament and therefore the candidates they have focused on are on one of the probably 100 teams that are in some tournament or the other.



What worries me until they do make some announcement is the talk in Arnet's weekly Cougar Sportsline that came out this week with a section entiteled "Dave Rose to Utah".



In the end, after giving all the reasons that he could see it happening or why it would be foolish for Rose to think that all the top LDS talent would just naturally follow him to the Pukes, it did cause me to dwell on the thought more. When I had heard that Hans Olsen had brought this up the week before on his radio program, I dismissed it knowing Olsen and his style.



While Arnett didn't bring anything new information wise on the subject, hearing it a second time like that caused me to actually pause on the subject.



My intial reaction was that surely Rose would not be interested. Making a move like that spoke of a person who was more so based on money than anything else. Yes, there was talk beyond that of Huntsman's dollars of a more elite stage (the Puke12) and no issues related to any Honor Code, but previously I would have thought from who I perceived that Rose was that he would be beyond those issues.



I'm sure there is nothing to worry about and this issue of not hearing a thing lately about Chris Hill filling the position is just timing, but until Arnett brought it up again I had already put the rumor to rest and now I can't completely.

Dont worry, Rose has been smart enought to be successful here. He is smart enought to not go over to the dark side, and besides, Chriss Hill won't hire another LDS coach anyway.

I've worried about the same thing. I don't think Rose would do it, but I'll feel much better when they announce their new coach. I've also heard Stu Morrill as a suggestion.

I can see Rose making that switch I mean what's his winning percentage in that building anyway????



I thnk he's 1-0 while coaching the team wearing white....

I heard something today about Chris Hill meeting with St. Mary's coach (I think it was St. Marys) while they were in Vegas with the speculation that that was the likely pick.

Exactly. Why wouldn't Hill be interested more in Morrill than anyone and why would Morrill not be interested in Utah? He had to have come up the last two times Utah filled the position, but I don't remember if Morrill is USU or bust. It seems to me that that is who I would focus on as he has a history of being able to bring in the LDS and non-LDS talent alike and yet thrive in environment that is off the front burner. Why would he not likewise have success up on the dung pile?

See, that is the kind of thing that usually is all over the headlines in Salt Lake and there seems to be nothing. That's the kind of news those guys usually thrive on.

I spent a considerable amount of time in Vegas this past weekend with people VERY much in the know on the situation. I'm more confident than ever that Rose isn't going to Utah and there are already boosters willing to front the cash to keep him.



expect utah to hire a dud they can afford--they have no money.

I asked him who he thought were the leading candidates:

If there is a BYU coach I could see going to Utah, I think it might be Dave Rice.

In this case it would be a double stuff cow pie cookie...cow pie, cookie (I'e always kind of like the Ags), cookie, and cow pie again.



I'd like to see Rice get an actual opportunity to be a head coach and if he has to be a PUKE12 assistant first, then that would be a shame. He's a good man.

Gotcha. I just hate to see such a nice guy ruin his life like that, but that would be showing Rice a lot of respect. I just think that it would be very, very hard for Hill to bring on an individual who has not been a HC into a situation where their team is moving on to the PUKE12 and he also has to learn the ropes of being a HC. Sometimes I think that prior HC experience is overrated. Rose and Mendenhall made the transition just fine and I think Rice could handle it, but although I wouldn't deny him such a career opportunity, I wish it would happen at a different place. I think Rice is ready.



Did Wyoming ever decide what they were going to do as Rice had been mentioned for that job as well.

Seriously, if :utard: doesn't hire Uncle Stu, they're crazy. The guy knows talent and can develop big men. He would get his 1 and 1s and could have :utard: on top of the Pac12 in a few years. I really think he's that good of a coach.

Back when Houston was looking for a coach Rose said he wasn't interested in the job that he liked coaching at BYU. If Rose isn't willing to jump ship to coach at his alma mater than I don't seem him wanting to coach at Utah.



I see Utah going after or trying to go after someone with a bit of clout as opposed to someone who'd be cutting their teeth as head coach. I don't see Rice going there.
