Apologies to be had

I agree with Hawkwing that apologies are in store for the HC office. I wonder if in the spirit of honor, however, that BYU might not also apologize for how it handled this situation. The fact is BYU did not need to inform us all that Davies was dismissed for honor code violations. The apology will not salve the harm already felt, but it will teach one thing: we are ALL responsible and accountable for our actions, even the university itself that requires its students to abide by a code of honor as a condition for admission. IF the Provo Herald forced the issue, and we do not know that for sure, then perhaps an apology for being willing to sacrifice a teen ager on the altar of earning a few more bucks is in order too. How dare they seek to capitalize upon one's error merely because that person is well known to all.

No one is going to hold the university accountable for something they wont even consider to constitute "wrong" doing.

And in truth I would be settled if they would just acknowledge INTERNALLY that they could have and should have handled this much better than they did.

As for capitalizing? BYU stood to make much more from a deep run in the tourney (of course the MWC gets most of it) than its getting from the press currently. BUt it costs a million bucks a day to run the university. Not sure the money is as important as the ALmigty "EXPOSURE." More like EXPOSE' at this point.



BUt I also am frustrated with the unintended consequences of their putting Brandon out there/under the bus/however we want to frame that.

Simple solution from here on out is to simply institute a policy change. If a players gets suspended, state it is was for a violation of team rules. If a player gets kicked out of school, it was a violation of team rules. If someone misses practices at the coaches demand, violation of team rules. No reason to use the HC as a media weapon. I get that the HC applies to everyone equally, but what does not apply equally is the level of attention given to athletes kicked out vs. regular students. Simple solution really.

I realize that, and I for one am not going to apologize to the HC because it was the HC office that fielded the media inquiries and messed up the responses.



I was responding to what DMCoug was saying. HC Office won't apologize and won't acknowledge internally they messed up. They think they did a bang up job. Carrie will probably get promoted.

Carrie Jenkins does not work in the HC office and is the one who was and has been answering questions. Carrie Jenkins is BYU's spokesperson. Along with Carrie Jenkins, AD Holmoe has answered questions and coach Rose have answered questions.

FWIW, I think apologies are due to the HC--they did not make mistakes, yet a number of our posters have really let them have it. Lawboy, I think your post is a good one, but perhaps falls under a new thread "Process to be had." And DM, you do know that the capitalizing I was objecting to was the Daily Herald's actions, not BYU...? I do not think BYU's actions were guided by $$. Perhaps we disagree. My original post was to focus on owning up to what we do. Davies is being required in a very big way to own up for his actions. I think BYU might own up for not handling this matter as it should have. It would be one good way to teach our students that BYU practices what it preaches....

You sure about that. That's not what they said in the press conference yesterday. They said they received an inquiry from the press and it's their policy that if they receive an inquiry they respond to it.

Yeah, I'm positive that Carrie Jenkins doesn't work for the HC Office. I would think a PR guy like yourself would verify who she works with before blasting away the entire dept.

Fine, you got me, Hawk. The HC Office isn't to blame. The HC Office did their job. BYU, the school, didn't per the school's representative. Or fine, more specifically, BYU's internal comms team messed it up.

Carri P. Jenkins is the assistant to the president for University Communications at Brigham Young University. In that position, she serves as the spokesperson for the university and directs the university’s communications offices. A Utah native, Carri received bachelor’s and master's degrees from BYU in communications. For 12 years, she served as the associate editor of BYU Magazine, the university's alumni publication.
