Why losing davies isnt the end of the world

We didnt lose our most important player, jimmer

Hartsock has been impressing me lately

I think Rose will push Anderson hard to fill the void

We have a lot of good scorers

3 is more than 2 (davies scored 2 points at a time, everyone else can shoot the 3)

Anderson is actually an asset on defense, he just REALLY needs to improve his offense

guess it depends on what you mean by "world"

BYU pulled ahead of SDSU with Davies on the bench in foul trouble. Unfortunately UNM can plan how to expose his absence.

We will now win our games better than we did before. Austin Collie's most famous quote holds the key.

It's not the end of the world but it is the end of any hope for BYU to go far in the tourney. There is no good way to spin this. It is what it is....a disaster. With Davies, BYU is a final 4 team, maybe even a finals team. without him, they are not. With Davies, teams had to respect BYU's inside scoring presence which takes pressure off of Jimmer, without him that respect is gone and teams will now be able to throw even more at Jimmer. There is no good way to spin this, this is terrible news.

I guess we just have to go with the old Loyola-Maramount formula: play 5 shooters, and jack up as many 3's as we possibly can in 40 minutes and hope enough of them go in that we win. They did make the Elite 8 in 1990, and that after losing star player Hank Gathers during the conference tournament to a heart problem.

If we can adjust strategically and rally around Davies as a team instead of being torn apart by this, we can still go deep into the tourney.

With loss of Davies and now no real inside scoring presence I think Jimmer will try to do too much which won't be good.

Davies loss is not good, for sure. However, here's another perspective.

1. Davies rarely did a lot of scoring, yes he had some good games, but he also had a bunch of zero and two point games. I disagree that his inside scoring threat is the key to this team's success.

2. Defense is where I worry, but I believe other players will step up, Anderson can play defense and he's a big body, if he only scores 5 points a game, so what?

3. This will be an opportunity for other players on the team to really step up and make a difference; Obouo can now be "the beast" and Harsock is a far more capable scorer than is Davies, Rogers can be a wild card piece in this puzzle.

4. Jimmer, Emery, Obouo and Hartsock are still on the team, last I checked. These guys make this team what it is, not Davies. Davies often got into foul trouble and wasn't on the floor when he was most needed--and what happened? the team won anyway, it didn't really matter. Yes BYU is now short one more body, and the depth issue is probably more significant than losing Davies. If Chris Collinsworth was healthy and playing, we'd hardly bat an eye at the loss of Davies.

Remember when Magic Johnson and the lakers were playing for the championship (I think Johnson was a rookie), and Kareem got injured and couldn't play in the final game? the coach moved Magic to the post. The Celtics hadn't prepared for this, they couldn't defend him down low, and Magic scores 42 points and the Lakers win the game and the championship. I don't know if we have a Magic to put in the post, but I believe it is New Mexico and Wyoming who now have a problem of trying to guess what BYU will do to "fix" this problem. And if teams think they can now run three and four guys at Jimmer; Obouo, Hartsock and Emery are going to score 20-30 points apiece, and BYU still wins. I think opposing coaches have already figured out that it is counterproductive to sacrifice good team defense just to try and stop Jimmer. It's bad coaching, it doesn't work, and other guys on the team will have big nights if teams try to do this anymore.

Davies "rarely did a lot of scoring"? Was the game in SDSU the first game you saw this year? He had scored 20 points twice this year, has seven other games with more than 15 and another 12 with more than 10 points. That's double figures in 20 of the 29 games, that's more than rarely.

He was avg. on the season 11 points a game...he was 3rd on the team in regards to scoring points.

Davies may have had some 2 pt and 0 pt outings but he was our most capable post scorer. This threat of his scoring kept a defender on him. We lose that. It is going to cause us problems, mark my words.

Davies' physical presence is a big loss in multiple ways, but I think the biggest way is mental for the rest of the team. The timing of this is going to be a huge mental challenge for the rest of the Cougs. We were riding really high with the confidence and momentum that the team earned in San Diego, and this is as much as anything, a huge momentum-killer. It allows doubts to creep in. It will cause some players (including Jimmer) to press more to try to compensate. These players are mature and handle external adversity superbly, in part because of their unity, but adversity from within like this could be an even harder thing to overcome. I'm hoping that they will rise to the challenge!

I still have a lot of faith in this team.

Between Hartsock, Anderson, Rogers, Abouo and Magnussen we can make up the points, rebounds and defense that Davies provided. I also think we're strong enough mentally to stay focused and mature enough of adjust to change.

Remember, Davies only averages 24 minutes a game, so it's not like we don't have any experience playing without him on the floor. The depletion of our already weak depth is a big issue. Things like injury and foul trouble are an even bigger concern then before.

Without a doubt we're a better team with him, but I think this team has it in them to step up to the challenge.

The real problem is on offense, Davies is a great low post scorer. Like really good, so teams leave him one on one down there and he kills them, then they start doubling, and just like that emery, fredette, and rogers are being left wide open. This is really going to hurt our offense.
