Christians and Mormons using the cross

I'm searching for opinions. Very curious what you guys have to say.



What is your impression why all Christians use the cross? As jewelry, tattoos, etc...



Why doesn't the LDS Church not use them?



I already know why, but we all have our opinion and I'm curious if anyone has any cool talks/quotes from our leaders about the subject.

The reason I always heard was we don't focus on the death of Christ but his life and resurrection. He isn't on the cross any more.



Additionally, we're not traditional Christians.

President Hinckley gave a beautiful talk that I have not tracked down yet about why we do not use the cross. I will do it poor justice but the cross is not Christainity. Rather it is the empty tomb and the love at Gethsemene...Perhaps someone else can find that talk and post a link. I'll try looking--found it It is in the April 2005 Engsign. Hree's the link:

Because we are a church built on truth, and we know the cross he was hung on was shaped like "T."



We just don't care to flaunt that knowledge around the other Christians who use the modified ankh borrowed from the egyptians without realized their are wearing the symbol of another god.

To the original post, we celebrate his resurrection and his life. And the cross has become a symbol of veneration to the point of near worship, which detracts from worshiping God. Faith is in God, not an article of remembrance.

Are you referring to the symbol that's shaped like a "T" with a circle on top of it? If so... I didn't think it was a cross but thought it was something else.

I wouldn't care that much one way or the other.

It would be a little weird, but I don't feel like the cross is "evil", I like urroner wouldn't care if the church adopted it somehow. I'd rather they not though. The cross is taken a little too seriously by other non-LDS and non J.W. Christians. Just like respect for Mother Mary turned into something bigger than it really should be.

I know Gordon B. Hinckley was outspoken on us not involving the cross like other denominations.

If Pres. Monson told us to do so, then it's fine with me.

Something I read once about the cross has stuck with me. if there was one moment when Satan could claim a major victory and/or look like he might be on the verge of victory is when he was able to convince God's chosen people to sacrifice their God.



If you couple that idea with the grotesque and bloody images of Christ that are routinely super-imposed on the Cross -- it almost seems like more of a celebration of defeat rather than images of a victory. I for one am okay with not kneeling before a cross.

This has kind of been said above, but we don't worship the dying Savoir. Rather we worship the living Savior who has conquored death. Howard W Hunter adressed this specific subject, and said that the great symbol of our religion is (not the cross, but) the temple. I don't think that is going to change any time soon.

the cross represents one portion of the Atonement.



1)taking on him our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane

2) willingly giving his life on the cross (the Romans and Jewish clergy chose the method)

3) taking his life again from the tomb (Ressurection)



Other Christian denominations foucs exclusively on #2 (or at least disproportionately). The whole process wasn't over until all 3 parts were complete. Does Satan use that as a way to demean the Atonement (as was stated earlier, it is a defeated, grotesque view)? I think it is well established he'll use any advantage he can get.

The reason why I ask about this. Is because the Church has posted what the Rome Italy Temple will look like. On the front door is a giant cross that is the size of the door.

It's not noticeable in your pic Shmoe. But here's the video presentation by the Church.



1:47 into the video you'll see it. The front door is probably 7-9 feet tall. The cross is the size of the door, which is a pretty big cross BUT when you look at it with the temple. It doesn't look that big. But it's obvious it's a cross, which surprises me.

A beautiful temple. These temples just get more and more magnificent.

(I just hope the Jesus Christ statue they put in the Visitors Center doesn't cry tears of blood)



Maybe Urroner can figure out a way to get a picture of it, and post it, if you or others can't view the video link.

I don't think its a cross, looks like a patterned door ala Mt. Timpanogos or many other temples.
