Riley Nelson to Safety

There are rumors from some BYU players floating out there that Riley Nelson will be a QB but on the defensive side of the ball. His position will supposedly be at safety where he can use his knowledge/understanding/recognition of offensive alignment sets to direct the positioning of the defense. Has anyone heard additional information about this possible move. I know he is very smart, has good speed, is tenacious and loves contact.

Good move. Needs to happen. He is a good athlete and fast enough, so add 25 lbs on him and he could be really good in that position. Plus, played there in high school, so should have a feel for it already.

Also doesn't hurt that he's at best the 5th best QB on the team. (Matt Marshall being #4)

This move makes sense because of Riley previously playing both Safety and QB. He is very much similar to both Rich and S. Johnson - outstanding academic scholar - very intelligent, agressive, strong leader and plays well beyond their athletic abilities. We all know that Bronco loves what Riley stands for and I am sure he would welcome him onto his side of the ball. He has Bronco's mentality - a perfect fit.

So if he transferred to utah he'd become their best QB and most popular player.

Sorry, Matt's at least #3, maybe #2. Especially if we look at passer ratings. 8)

Could be a good move. What does he weigh? Buck80? Needs 20 pounds for sure, unless he can lower the boom like Scotty J or Rich and not get injured.

Interesting you should say this...... Those close to Riley/program will tell you just how close Riley was to transferring last week when asked about switching positions. It's still a possibiIty.(not to Utah of course)

That would be completely ridiculous to transfer again.

Transferring has never been an option for Nelson--he is at BYU for pre-med above anything else. Any rumor about him considering transfer are false--he's not about to jeapordize his future career for one season of football at an FCS or lower school.

He needs to make the switch, it's too bad he didn't do it already. I have been saying for a long time, dude could be our Eric Weddle.

I think Riley could be an effective safety, but I'm not sure he has the safety mentality.

Wow!! That would be a huge disappointment. I hope it's not true - I understand - but I hope Riley hangs w/ the Cougs.

still haven't seen any links to this, is it all still in the rumor-mill and yet-to-be-released information?

I would definitely put it in rumorville. apparently "some players" are saying this but these 'some players' are not being named.

I believe the two players that stated this were OL: Braden Hansen and Braden Brown.

Personally - I would hope this is a false rumor. It's critical to have a dependable 2nd string QB. Riley is experienced. could walk right in if Jake was injured - but also see use in special situations. I just don't see it at this point.

I would rather fall back on lark or munns at this point than nelson. Nelson's strengths don't lend to the byu offense. I guess we don't know for sure what the byu offense is though.
