Semantics

I realized when I was listening to some mtn pregame talk that they could say that SDSU at 12-1 was in first place in the MWC even though they had one loss and we had one lost, but we were only 11-1.



This doesn't buy it though:

"We start by mentioning the Mountain West Conference race. They're tied. San Diego State, ranked sixth nationally (a spot ahead of BYU) has a slight upper hand because it won at New Mexico. The edge is ruined if it loses at home to the Cougars, thus giving them a regular-season sweep."



That's not a true statement. If something happened today to where the two teams were not allowed to finish their seasons, but they were going to seed for the MWC tounament based off of where we stood today, first off the MWC would have ended in a tie with co-champions, BUT...BYU would actually have the "upper hand" because although BYU is tied in conference competition, BYU has the tie-breaker because we ACTUALLY are 1-0 vs SDSU.



Now if you want to talk about SDSU having an advantage in game being at home Saturday, blah, blah, blah, or that they are just lucky that New Mexico got lucky, okay, but it is not correct on Thursday, 2/24/2011 to say that SDSU has the upper hand because of their win at New Mexico. It caused that we are now sadly tied with them, but it gives them ZERO upper-hand unless they beat us Saturday and then we have 2 losses. Sometimes it just sound around the mtn and I guess the local media here that we actually didn't win that first game or that we don't get any credit for doing so. Slight detail, but I've heard a few of the mtn station "experts" kind of following the same line.

What is interesting, if my understanind is correct, is that the "upper hand" as it is being called due to the New Mexico win, has an incredibly low percentage chance of coming into play:



The only place I see the New Mexico game into play is if SDSU wins on Saturday, and then loses to Wyoming, and BYU wins out besides Saturday. Both teams with 2 losses, SDSU with 2 wins over New Mexico.



Any other situation would be 1)one team having more wins than the other, 2) BYU with the sweep over SDSU, or 3) SDSU beating BYU, but losing to Colorado State which would then be taken into account before the New Mexico loss.

semantics. but I do like that BYU doesnt get the respect that the actual record would suggest it should--as has been pointed out. I would rather be short-sided for our team who feels that they have to play from the under-dog, under-rated stance.

Bring it SuckDogState! I dont fear your team. I respect them, but this will be a battle and not a runaway or convincing win that many think it will be.

Anybody know what the line is?

This is simple and they are correct. People asume you will win your home games if you are a contender. They assume you will win most of your road games. We beat UNLV in Vegas and had a slight edge over SDSU until they matched that feat and got a slight edge on us when we lost in the PItt and SDSU did not.



It is a very slight edge. But if all the assumptions hold true. We will win our home games and lose to SDSU at their place and they will not lose another game and we will have 2 confernece losses and they will have one.



All we have to do is beat the assumptions and beat SDSU in theri crib and we will have more than a slight edge as they will have two conference losses to our 1 and neither of us will be likely to lose another game - unless we burn out after CSU . SDSU and lose to UNM again.



That is the sight edge they are talking about.

I don't see either team losing a team next week. So if we beat SDSU they have two losses and the UNM game is an non-factor. If we lose to them then we have two losses and the UNM game is a non-factor.



As described above, the UNM game likely won't come into play without a huge upset loss by BYU or SDSU following the game on Saturday.

Kitic, you're not getting it. The slight edge is that IF SDSU wins their remaining games (assuming holding serve at home against BYU), then they will win. Right now the only difference between the teams agains other competition is BYU's loss at NM. They aren't implying any tie-breaker.

I am getting it. The UNM game is irrelevant.



If BYU wins tomorrow, SDSU has two league losses and BYU has one. BYU wins the league outright unless they drop one of their last three to UNM, or WYO. With both games at home, that's not every likely.

The only way the UNM game becomes relevant is if the winner of tomorrow's game drops another game against a team in the bottom half of the league. BYU's loss to UNM is not really going to factor in the MWC championship.

The slight edge would have become a huge advantage if SDSU won but is now an even bigger BYU advantage with the BYU win because we are up 1 in the loss column and have the tie breaker. Unless UNM and Wyoming both beat us in Provo, we are conference champions.
