What is the Doman Offense?

What do you think the BYU offense is going to look like under Doman?



Based on his interviews, I think Doman is going to try and install a West-Coast style offense that employs some spread option principles. I think we will be going back to a timing based passing game, but I think our running game is going to be moving outside the tackles and when we need a lead blocker inside the tackles, I think we will be using a TE in motion instead of a the squat FBs we have seen the past few years under Anae. It will be a risk-taking offense that will look to exploit motion sets, inside receivers, and up-tempo play-calling, while keeping legitimate outside threats and fast RBs to keep the defenses honest.



Most of all, I'm just excited for the big reveal in Oxford.

Doman was arrested this weekend?????

I think the biggest changes we'll see with be the removal of the wide splits on the OL. I think we'll run many of the same plays, but when we go split-backs in the shotgun our OL will maintain their normal splits.

I by no means think we are going to a spread option offense--I said it will employ some spread option principles--use the entire field to create one-on-one matchups to allow your players to make plays, use of motion sets to make the TEs and WRs ball carriers and lead blockers. You can use spread option principles within a West Coast offense without asking your QB to run the read option.



Nelson will not be more than a situational tool in the kit, if that.

I hope that Nelson IS a situational tool in the kit. I don't want him starting at QB in front of Jake, but I want him on the field somewhere---the kid has heart!

I think we see more 4 and **GASP** 5 receiver sets (with tailback motioning to splits) than we have seen in a while.



I also think we see a small amount of option plays, which is where I think Riley comes in, if he doesn't switch positions. I really can't see Doman and DuPaix NOT putting a few into the playbook.



And I think it is warranted, too. The option sweep is a great play to get defenses of balance. Especially if you set it up and start doing wr sweeps, etc.



I hope that they throw a lot of screens, and quick outs to HB's etc, if we are going to 3 and 4 wide outs - because I hate for us to lose the balance of run pass that we were getting a good feel for. Just because we have a great qb and great wr's doesn't mean we need to throw every play for 10 yards. Or even throw every play for that matter...

He runs a very novel spread that has two primary formations



Friggin sweet model: 2 wideouts and split backs---QB calls out 1 of 12 possible plays from that position.





And the Ain't Anae model: Where Doman makes mid-game adjustments and works with talent he has, while position coaches improve it during practices.

I love this question. I know we will see soon enough with spring ball around the corner, but I really think we are about to see a change. I suspect the spread is about to go, and we will see a QB under center much more. I have a source who told me as much during last season, that the team planned on doing this in 2011, but of course, it is to be seen.



I think that the basis of our offense will be the West Coast style. It is similar to the spread in that it is primarily a short pass, ball control offense. It is different that the spread in that the QB is typically under center, the line spreads are more narrow, and it rarely uses a 2 TE set. It will give different formation options as well, such as 1 back, 2 back, or 4 and 5 WR sets as an option. Doman said he wanted to keep teams guessing, and formation looks is one way to do that. I suspect that the BYU version will be most similar to the old 49ers version in that it will attempt to have a run game and not simply be pass dominant. I think a 50/50 balance will be the goal. Think back to the Roger Craig power run, but catch out of the backfield days, or Ricky Waters, etc. The 49ers used the whole field, and used all players to spread out a defense in varying formations, I expect us to do the same. It fits our personnel on offense, and the core philosophy the team has used the last several years as well. Should be fun to watch.

I'm hoping for a return to the WCO as well. If BYU adopts a system similar to the 49ers, then we should expect to see a lot of pro-set with split FB (Rathmam/Floyd) and HB (Craig/Watters). Leading up to the Super Bowl, I went back and watched a lot the "America's Game" series on Hulu. In the 49ers episodes, it was a lot of "red right" or "red left" formation, which as least has the advantage of not tipping your hand to the defense by looking consistent every play. I don't think I saw one shotgun snap by the Niners in the five episodes.



While I don't expect BYU to be that constant in terms of formation, it would be nice to see a return to pro set as the base formation/personnel.

IMHO - I think Sno is "on target." I think the hiring of Cahoon for the Receivers sends a strong signal. The Cougar passing game is back. I do not expect a wide open Wild West slingers exhibition. I do expect precise routes & for receivers the to HANG ON to the BALL!!!!!

Hopefully all these changes wont affect the execution coming into the beginning of next year. Our team, while not newbies anymore, is still relatively young.

Yes, it is worrying, but it can't be half the trainwreck that ensued last year.



"Hey everybody. We are going to do TWO completely different offenses that don't play off each other...and that clash in almost every absolute way."

I am glad "the instigator" is gone, so we can have one offense with (hopefully) the best players palying each position.

I see the offense having a little bit of Anae, a little bit of Crowton, a little bit of WCO and a little bit of the spread (more for the passing game, kind of like the New England Patriots).



I think there will be more under center formations (although Heaps has never been an under center QB), a whole lot more motion, using slot receivers as runners, etc.
