Great article at the Deseret News about the BYU Athletic Dept. and where it gets its money.

Of course football makes all the money. I like the part about the perks football players get and I'd like to know more. Those perks are a reward like Logan says and they illustrate the failure of amateur athletics to monetize performance. It goes to show markets yearn for freedom no matter how you try to restrain them.

So I love the response by hawkwing to my initial post. It reminds me of a time in high school when I was debating a girl and after I made my opening argument she proceeded to cite all the data to complement my argument in her rebuttal. I got up and said "what she said" and sat down. Then she got up and tried to say she didn't mean it.



But what I really want to know is what are the perks Logan was talking about.

Yes, pay the players-all of them---then bankrupt the system and make it all go away. Genius. Sounds like the perfect plan of free enterprise.

The overall program made a $5.5 million profit. The article didn't address it, so I wonder where that money goes. Reinvested into special projects for the athletic dept? General university or scholarship funds? Kickbacks to local journalists? Inquiring minds want to know...

So why is it that they don't want to expand LES?

I"m sure they do, but expansions cost major money and you have to be able to recoup that money as well as pay for all the other sports at the school.



Although Bronco's been having success recently,last year aside, BYU has not sold out of all of our home games. Now I'm not looking at numbers here, but some teams like Nebraska, Notre Dame and even Michigan sell everything regardless.



I think when BYU gets to the point where we sell out all our games, regardless of year, rank, opponent, and record. That's when we start talking about filling in the stadium corners. This topic comes up about once every 6 months I think...

I think our home schedules will just need 2-3 good games a year and we start selling out. In some years recently, we were lucky to have 1. Like say in 2010. But 2011 has a solid home slate, and having Notre Dame, Texas and some other top schools coming in to Provo, those years the demand will be higher for sure.
