Valentines Day Reflections The Moments You've Loved the Most

Since it's Valentines day, we should naturally find our hearts and minds turning to love. I thought it would be great if we listed the moments we've loved the most from our days as Cougar fans. Let me start.



SDSU Bball game at the MC: One of the most electric and amazing crowds I've ever been a part of. The place was absolutely rocking and the game lived up to its hype as one of the best ever in the state. Jimmer is simply that fantastic.



Beck to Harline: Absolutely epic moment. Signified the revival of the program and kept Utah from taking a 5 year winning streak. I was sitting at home watching the game with friends and family. When the catch was made we all erupted with cheers and were jumping up and down for several minutes afterwards. Later our neighbors asked if everything was okay because it was so loud.



4th and 18: At the game, front row seats on the 50 yard line (student section). Seeing Hall barely avoid being sacked and then realizing that Collie was wide open down field. Later on, Harvey plowing over yewts to get the TD.



George Parts the Red Sea: Another thrilling last second win over the Yewts. The play opened up right in front of us and watching Yewts fall to the side as George caught the ball was beautiful.



Renaming the Stadium LES: The last game I attended before my mission, I went with a date, huge mistake -- she just wanted to talk the whole time. I finally shushed her and cried big manly tears when President Hinkley officially renamed the stadium.



Meeting the team: Those of you who have listened to the podcasts know that when I was younger I had a rare medical condition and a family friend on the team. The team took me in and supported me. This was during the Ty Detmer years, and I occasionally was allowed into the locker room after games and met Detmer, Edwards, Drage and Kauffman a few times. They were all amazing guys and seemed genuinely interested in me and how I was doing.



What are yours?

This doesn't get mentioned a lot, but I was one of the few people that stuck around for the end of the 2006 TCU game at the Marriott Center. We were down 8 points with less than a minute left and I was mad at everyone (i.e. 80% of the people there) who was leaving. Then we come back and Cummard hits a 3 with 10 seconds left to tie the game, we dominate OT, and it was just awesome being there.



I think that game was an early turning point in Dave Rose's career. That win moved us to 11-6 on the season and 3-3 in conference, where we eventually took second place, and Coach Rose hasn't looked back since.

I only included things for which I was present.



1. BYU-Michigan 1984. For my Christmas present that year Mom and Dad took me to San Diego for my Christmas present. Amazing.



2. BYU-Air Force 1985. You guys can rip Vai however much you want, but seeing those two touchdown prevents me from every saying a word against him.



3. Meeting with players. My parents are friends with the Haysberts so Adam used to bring Leon White over for dinner Sunday nights back in the day. Juking Jason Buck on the playground when he came to our grade shool was pretty sweet too.



4. BYU-AZ last year. Watching Jimmer drop 49 right after I moved to Tucson and rubbing it in at work the next day. I almost don't have words.



5. My college days (97-00) weren't that great for football or basketball. What makes it worse is that my friend was quarterback for AF in the WAC championship game but I suppose that last win for Lavell over New Mexico was pretty sweet. And heckling that guy from SIU with the S-curl during the NIT was my shining moment - an 85% free throw guy went 1-7 that day and I'm taking all the credit.

I remember Ty Detmer taking one on the chin versus Miami, went out for a couple of plays and then came back in to dismantle the Miami defense by the tune of 500+ passing yards.



The Texas A&M game in 96 when Sark threw the last minute touchdown pass to KO.



And the Cotton Bowl game with K State and the press conference after when Sark called Canty out for not being there when his team needed him most.

I realized another one, I can't remember what year it was, but we were playing Air Force at Cougar Stadium. The crowd was so loud that they called a penalty on BYU for excessive crowd noise. This simply made the crowd louder, and we got another penalty for noise. The crowd went absolutely wild after that and if I recall correctly there was a 3rd penalty.

AFA was complaining because they couldn't yell out false snaps over the noise. ;)

Let's add the 1997 Cotton Bowl while we are at it. First time I took my kids to a BYU football game.

I also will only post moments that I was present for, and ones that haven't been mentioned yet.

Football:

BYU vs Oklahoma-2009- Myself and 2 buddies drove the 20+ hours to Dallas. 2 days before we left I came down with the flu but I wasn't going to let that prevent me from going. It was the most miserable drive I have ever done but standing there in Cowboys Stadium with that 14-13 on the scoreboard made it worth everything.



BYU vs UCLA-Vegas Bowl- Blocking that field goal was such a swing of emotions. We went from knowing that we were going to lose because their kicker was awesome to just sheer jubilation in a matter of seconds. In the moments after the block I was embracing people that I had never met before, everybody was just so happy.



Basketball

BYU at Utah-2011- Jimmer hitting that halfcourt short at the buzzer was just incredible. At halftime the scoreboard had a trivia question about the top scorer on the Ute team from last year having 31 points in a single game. At that point Jimmer had 32. Chanting "You got Jimmered!" and "We want 50!". Jimmer dropping 47 on them was the greatest single game performance I have ever personally witnessed.

I can't remember the year, because I am so frickin' old but I was in Vegas at the WAC championship game against WYO when it went into overtime. I had never been on a BYU alumni trip and got to sit with "real" BYU fans.... so cool when we won. I won $1000 in Circus Circus....that didn't hurt either :whistle: ;) :P

That was classic and I am pretty sure that's when everyone started shaking their car keys.

I believe it was Dee Dowis who was the QB for AF at the time as well. The crowd is too loud penalty might be the worst penalty ever.

That's right. I couldn't even drive at the time, yet I had a set of keys (I guess home keys?) and I remember shaking them proudly!

In 92 BYU was hosting Penn State for a night game. It was cold and snowing. I got there early and was sitting pretty high up in the South end zone during warmups. Suddenly a football hit the bleachers right next to. I looked on the field and saw that a couple of BYU place kickers were laughing really hard. I think they were trying to see who could be the first to hit the nerd sitting all by himself!

I'm pretty sure that night was the only time BYU has beaten Penn State.
