Dave Rose

While I am happy that all the teams success seems to be attributed to Jimmer, I think Dave Rose is doing an phenomenal job as coach. last night was a perfect example of that.



the first game against air force was close. he makes some adjustments based on what he saw and air force simply had no answer for. Air force was outplayed and out coached.



I think he is an awesome coach. I hope we can hold on to him.

It would certainly take a lot for him to be in a better situation. Houston? not even close to the same atmosphere and excitement that is at BYU right now. He's invested a lot into BYU and I think that he sticks around for quite a while.

I don't see Rose going anywhere. I think the cancer from two years ago, solidified the roots he's laid in Provo. He's now lived here since 1997, that's a long time. I think he's happy here.

Generally, I'd agree with you, but if a team like UCLA, Indiana, Syracuse, UConn or UNC came calling looking to replace their coach (basically only the biggest of the big teams) he'd probably go. He was reportedly not very excited about the change to the WCC, but I don't see him leaving for any other non-power conference team or the dregs of the power conferences either.

Probably. But I'm not sure he's a good fit at any of those. He's got no ties to the mid-west or northeast. He could make it at UCLA or another southwestern type team.

He's going to the Jazz now that Sloane's out. ;)

Anyone know why he didn't play for BYU?

Hopefully we make the same adjustments and can blow out New Mexico next time around. I hate Steve Alford, almost as much as the frUtes.

Look I don't where you got the idea that Dave Rose wasn't all that excited about the WCC. Because I remember KSL interviewing him shortly after it was announced they would be going to the WCC. He seemed pretty excited about it to me. Now maybe he was just putting on an act for the media,but I seriously doubt it.

He has, in the past, indicated that the only other place that he had any interest in coaching was Houston. That might change with a really great offer, but I don't think so. Cancer has also had an affect on the way he sees life, and BYU is an even better fit for his current view.

I've never heard Rose express any interest in any other job. I don't think even interviewed when the Houston job was open a few years back.

I've not been able to come to a true appreciation of Dave Rose as a coach of the technical game of basketball. I think he is an excellent recruiter, and excellent ambassador of the BYU program, a true gentleman, has a great personality and knows basketball. Now that sounds like he has it all, but I've often wondered, if he wasn't such a great recruiter for the right kid to come to BYU, how would he fair at another school that didn't have the attributes of a BYU. It could be that I'm just not seeing his technical basketball ability and it would be hard, but while I'm pleased as can be at the job that has been done, I just have never been able to really determine if he is the great coach his record bares him out to be. I'm not sure why I'm unsettled about that, but I am.



That probably doesn't make sense, but that's what I think of Rose.

I think its hard to look at Rose's record year after year and not see that he's a good, if not great, coach when it comes to basketball knowledge. Example-the zone that the Cougs run may look simplistic, but tweaks are made for every team we play.

Rose is exceptional. Anyone who can post the following record in his first five years of coaching is special:



20-9

25-9

27-8

25-8

30-6



I'm excited to see what the future holds. (Though BYU basketball AJ [after Jimmer] does seem a little less exciting).

but then things happen like the NM game where it just didn't appear to me that he did enough coaching wise to change up on New Mexico and stop their run to take over the lead and plow on by. I could be wrong, but one of the games last night, or the night before that was a 2 point game and the defense had to take a stand. There were only seconds left and the coach started his defense immediately I believe in a 2-3 zone and gave them just a few seconds of that and immedately the team having fooled the offense switched seamlessly into man-on-man and the opposing team was caught totally unexpected and failed to get off a decent shot. It was brilliant coaching.



Maybe I'm missing it as I'm definitely an amateur and arm-chair PG, but those are the types of things I see from people I put in the "great" category. Once again, I'm very, very happy with Rose and I dont' know that we could do better, but that question never seems to settle in my mind.

I don't think that the NM game was a coaching let down. I think the players got up too much for SDSU and were tired for the NM game. The fear that everyone had (including the coaches) is that the players would have a let down against NM. In the second half of the NM game BYU was a step slow defensively and NM got off shot after shot uncontested. They hit them all. Rose took Jimmer out of that game with about 5 minutes left to rest him (I was really suprised by the move) and when Jimmer came back in, it was too late, there was nothing that BYU could do, NM had all the momentum and couldn't miss. If BYU had had a bye week before that game and had gone to NM rested (both mentally and physically) the outcome would have been very different.

The UNM wasn't a coaching letdown, its simply a sign that the season is long and teams don't show up every night. It has happened to every team in the country save one, and they've gotten some serious help from the zebras in their many close wins vs mediocre teams.
