Crime wave hits BYU

Man BYU has become an uncontrollable sespool of delinquents!!!

Especially the guy who fled police after jaywalking. I hope the officer didn't spill his drink or drop his donut when he chased down the perp. I wonder if he called for backup to help run the guy down?



And those kids that were playing hide and seek. They should have all spent the night in jail! That would show them to disrespect atoritee (said in a Carman voice).



I especially like the report of the two guys doing bicycle tricks that "left" when the police showed up. So they filed a report?



I think the only story missing was one about some girl and her facebook page!

I have been reading "Police Beat" for years and when I show it to co-workers, they are amused at the types of crime at the Y. The colleges they went to would have pages and pages of moderate to very serious crimes if they would do a "Police Beat."

I got caught for riding a longboard across BYU campus once at 11:30 when the place was absolutely empty. the female officer who "pulled me over" stated she wasn't going to write me up. Wow, I was relieved, but started asking a little about the no tolerance policy for skateboards but why bicycles were allowed to fly through campus at 30 mph with little or no consequences (I think we all know that BYU's problem with skateboarding is the image). She got VERY excited and started threatening to write me up. It was pretty comical. Shows how bored the police must be at BYU.



All time favorite police beat is still coach rose blowing the whistle in the phone after getting a phone call from some scammer.

Two favorites that come to mind (i'm paraphrasing these):



A women reported to the police that there was a hot air balloon flying over campus. The policeman told the women that while there was a hot air balloon, BYU does not control the airspace above campus (why would you feel the need to call the police about an air balloon?)



A women called the police stating that she had received a suspicious phone call from a male who hypnotized her. She couldn't recalled any details of the call, though she remembered referring to him as "master". The police told the women that it's impossible to hypnotize someone over the phone.

Pretty funny stuff. Does anyone know if actual crimes are reported there, or is that just a summary of infractions handled by campus security?



Just wondering because according to citidata Provo isn't terribly safe (e.g., 30 rapes per thousand last year).

I just read this one:

Jan. 17: A subject was detected on LaVell Edwards Stadium property, fled and was pursued, but the police were called away on a more pressing matter.

What was the subject they were chasing? Was it math or maybe in Culture 101? If the subject was about pretty women, I wouldn't mind pursuing that subject either and what could be a more pressing matter than the subject of pretty women?

Jan. 14: A woman was driving near the Crabtree building when she stopped at a light. A male using the crosswalk tapped her car with his hand and told her that she should not drive while talking on the phone. The driver saw this same man later and told him not to touch her vehicle. In response he rubbed his hands on the front of her car. Police were called, but the pedestrian was gone before they arrived.

They do have actual crimes every once in a while. Usually it's personal theft or shoplifting.



According to that website, Provo's crime rate is only half that of the national average and I'm sure the crime rate on BYU campus is even lower. Interestingly, Ivy league schools Harvard, Yale and Brown are all the top list for most dangerous schools. so is MIT. I imagine their police beats aren't quite as entertaining.

Vehicular molestation is a serious crime that, unfortunately, is made the butt of many jokes.

I had a run in with the police while I was at the Y. I don't remember whether it was campus or Provo, but it makes for a good story and I believe it did appear in the Police Beat.



So I'm at my apartment studying for an exam one afternoon and the phone rings. When I answer, it sounds like a nervous 12 year old boy trying his first prank phone call on the other end. All he said was, "Is Seymour Butts there?" I just laughed and told him he called a wrong number. Couple minutes later the phone rang again. Keep in mind that this was before the days of caller ID. So I answer and I get the same nervous kid asking for "Seymour Butts". I decided to play along and said, "No, but this is Harry Balls." I get an immediate hang up.



Later that night the police came by our apartment and asked that all the roommates gather. They then go on to explain that a freshman girl in the dorms reported an obscene phone call was made of a sexual nature. They explain that placing an obscene phone carries a $200 fine in Provo. I laughed and told them how it went down and that they couldn't do abything about it because SHE placed the phone call and not ME. They asked me to keep it clean in the future and left.



Turns out one of my roommates cleaned windows at Heritage Halls and that morning he had left a fake message on the refrigerator instructing one of the girls to return a phone call from "Seymour Butts" and attached our phone number. It was meant to be a joke that the girls would laugh at when they saw it, but apparently this chick was too dense to pick up on the joke.



That night I put my headphones on and fell asleep to the sweet sounds of NWA's classic "F*ck Tha Police" and decided then and there to go to law school.



OK, I made the last sentence up. The rest is true. Ha!

My favorite goes something like this:

I was never smart enough to attend BYU or any college. Except for a few classes at Weber St. So I have no idea what the Tanner Building is or who goes in there. I now get it, that students go there.
