will there be any immediate impact players from 2011 class?

I think Ryker Matthews and possibly Manoa Pikula are the most ready to contribute at OT and FB respectively from the film clips I've seen.

Overall I think the 2011 class is a little lacklustre considering now we are playing a tougher schedule (especially if we get that TCU game) and more nationwide with all the games being on ESPN, I would have liked to see a similar quality in class to the 2010 class.

The problem with getting immediate contributers in the 2011 class is that we had a number of redshirts from the 2010 class that were probably better than anyone on the team. They might push current starters for playing time.



Our O-line is already set, I could see some 2011ers get time on defensive rotations and during garbage time, but the only way that class will push 2010 is through injury. I just don't see Van Noy, Kaveinga Stout etc, getting pushed by any incomers... D-line is different story but that's the way college football is supposed to be!

its got to be dline guys that will probably see playing time as freshman. i expect fangupo to be playing significant minutes at dtackle. he is not a freshman though obviously.

My guess is that guys like Moses Kaumatule and Lene Lesatele could make an immediate impact at DE mainly out of necessity as well as Preston Hadley in the secondary. Also, USC transfer, Hebron Fangupo should have an immediate impact at DT if you count him as part of the 2011 class.

To be perfectly honest, I am glad when BYU has the luxury of redshirting all freshman, because it means that there is sufficient depth to allow for it. When freshman have to play, it means you lack depth at a position, unless a freshman kid coming in is so superior to what you have. You want that to be rare occasion because the kids you already have in are ready to go.



Of the freshman coming in, I am not sure any will play in 2011, and I am great with that. I do see so JC guys getting some time though.

Definitely want to echo your post Law. As BYU attracts more and better talent, something fans and players alike will need to get used to is guys not starting/impacting right away. Or that a stud and fan fave gets bumped because a guy behind him is, in fact, the real deal.

You mean like.....Heaps? ;-) Sorry, couldnt resist.

I think I'm correct in concluding that the majority of BYU's football injuries (maybe nationwide for all I know) have occurred on the Dline and the Oline. Certainly the past two years, there have been enough injuries that freshmen do get playing time, so I would never say nobody in this class will see playing time. They may not be starters, or they may be forced into playing because of injuries, but the good ones will see the field unless they must be redshirted. Our Dline took a beating this past season, so depth is really critical. And it's nice to have the luxury of having some bonifide run stoppers, and some bonifide pass rushers that Bronco can insert in certain situations.

A bruising fullback who can block and catch passes would make an impact on offense - Fui, Manase, kind of guy.



A blazing fast CB or two would make an impact - even if just for depth.



We nursed along a thin Safety corp last year. SOme dept or better yet somene who could blow past who we have would make an impact.



The problem is that recent classes did not address these needs sufficiently. We will lack depth here and probably be fine elsewhere as long as Heaps stays healthy long enough for BYU to develop a 2nd and 3rd string QB in mop up time after the schedule lightens up. If Heaps gets injured early - it will start to look like last year pretty quick.
