Observations from the Pit

1. Jimmer and davies are going to be a tough combo in the tourney.

2. Rose still struggles to make adjustments, Kept hartstock in the game when they were killing the cougars with 3's. Noah was playing well on the boards but he couldn't close on the three point shots.

3. Pit was incrediable never seen anything like it. My brother knew the lobo fans around us and they were very nice, didn't have a problem going in or out of the pitt. They seemed pretty classy to me. You have the respect the pit my ears were ringing after the game.

4. Cougars looked tired,Jimmer missed a few free throws.

5. Something is wrong with Emery not sure what it is but something is wrong. Maybe he is hurt.

Did davies do anything during that last 15 minutes? He was killing the lobos there for a while and Abouo was right there with him. Then the entire team disappeared.

Perimeter defense! Sound familiar Jazz fans? hey, those/that freshman got hot. they will look as lost as Collinsworth when they come to the MC.

But i agree, Noah, just looked very slow (maybe tired as well) at that speed. BUt with Rogers too skinny and Kyle needing....something....and the interior defense sagging down to compensate for, dare I say, Jimmer's difficulty in stopping quicker guards, get a team who can shoot and we are in trouble.

He was getting manhandled in the post the last 15 minutes. The Lobos did a great job of both denying the entry pass and using both hands and arms to push, shove and move Davies from the low block. He was getting abused and the refs let it go. Davies could never establish position and so was never ready to receive the entry pass.



Abouo was killing the Lobos when they were making dumb passes that Chuck could use his athleticism to tip and steal. When BYU switched to zone, he was no longer responsible for Gary - whom he abused/owned in the 1st half - and our defensive rotations were slow.



It was a perfect storm the last 15 mintues. The refs let play go. The Lobos got hot. BYU couldn't close out on shooters. The Lobos stopped turning the ball over. BYU couldn't get out in transition. The inside-outside Jimmer/Davies show stopped working. The Lobos won. Their students broke benches, stormed the floor and howled all night.

Agree fully with Kitic, davies couldn't get free and Jimmer settled for jump shots. Jimmer hit this 30 ft three and the pit went dead quite it was worth the trip down to see that. Btw I have to give props to the cougar fan that had the guts to sit in the front row of the NM student section.

I guess this is one of those games where we should've stayed in man. Pretty much anytime we play against a quick PG that should be our approach because once the little guy gets in the lane you can count on an open look (assuming the team is good enough to make open shots, which they are in the tourney).

UNM was good enough on Sat to beat the zone. SDSU wasn't. UNM was/is a better outside shooting than the Aztecs. I doubt we run into a team the first two-three rounds who is good enough to beat us from the outside if we get a 2 or 3 seed.

Ref's don't call a lot of fouls away from the ball, especially in college. They get caught watching the ball like the rest of us do, so I'm not surprised they didn't call fouls on the people guarding Davies. Brandon probably should have tried to move up the key instead of toward the sideline as an adjustment to get the ball. Better passing/driving lanes and takes the baseline away as a defender. Also would have opened the baseline up for a cutter off the post feed.



The Lobos made their big run with both Davies and Jimmer on the bench. BYU probably needs at least one of those two on the floor the whole time. Jackson can get hot and KC did a fair job of running the point when Davies and Jimmer were out, but there was no one that demanded attention from the defense with more than one guy.



I also think that Rose needs to find a way to get Jimmer some rest during at least one of the games during the week. He got that rest in the 2nd half and then immediately drained 2 3's that kept BYU ahead. I would like to see him come out with about 8:50 to 8:30 left in the first half and have him come back in right after the media time out at 8:00. If possible, I'd like to see the same in the 2nd half as well.

Wow, I totally missed this game! When did BYU play against Pitt?

This is the first and only positive report I have ever heard or read about UNM fans or the Pit in general. And I mean ever. I have talked to New Mexico fans who don't go to the Pit because of the environment there. They go to road games, neutral site games and the tournament, anything away from Alberquerque. So this post surprises me to say the least.

I was on the 16th row and I didn't hear any of that while Emery was down. Maybe over by the student section but where I was they cheered him as he got up. There was the guy behind me yelling "poke him in the eye" every time Jimmer had the ball. I am not really sure why people boo Jimmer, it happend at CSU and now the Pit. I can understand booing the whole team but it was just for Jimmer. My brother is from New Mexico and some of his co workers were around us so maybe that is why nothing happend. But for the most part the Pit was not as bad as i had envisioned. Their fans stand the whole game and cheer, nothing was better when Jimmer hit a 30 ft three and the pit went dead silent.
