Wow. That was awesome.







My wife has some ex-facebook friends currently at BYU that are hating on the team. And they were saying BYU players get unfair rides through school and have it easy (what crap) and on top of it said she's disgusted that her church tithes pay for them. Wow, my wife ripped her comments apart. I mention this here because ESPN went after the whole Mormon thing, and Jimmer "conducts himself well" he represents everything BYU hoped it would with the contract and Independence/wcc. So if you have friends or members who are idiots, please set them straight, church exposure has really started kicking off thanks to leaving the hellish mwc, and awesome team performance. Also, several G.A.s attend every home game, we let her know.

Let your wife's friends know that I was at the game and happened to be sitting by 10 of the 24 scouts. I got to talking to them before the game started and it turned from a basketball discussion to a full blown gospel discussion about the church, BYU, missions, the honor code, marriage and family....... They were intrigued, impressed, and definitely left with a lasting impression. This was obviously a finite example of how BYU athletics can help spread the gospel, but when ESPN is asking you live on sports center about your church and your conversion, the mission of the church is being manifest.



Your wife needs new friends.

I'm willing to bet money that the "haters" have never attended a BYU basketball game and if they attended a football game it was only so they could be by their boyfriend.



As far as I know, the vast majority of the funding comes from boosters, profits from sports (that's why independence will be so big for us), sponsors, and donors. Tithing may pay for the heating bill on the building, but it's not paying for Jimmer's scholarship. In fact, even academic scholarships are paid for by donors, like me.



Does your wife's friends realize 70 percent of their tuition is covered by tithing? So basically, every BYU student is on a 70 percent scholarship! Odds are, your wife's friends are taking more tithing than Jimmer is since Jimmer's scholarship is likely paid for by boosters.



As for the unfair "rides" through school, that's BS. My wife was an athlete at BYU. Yes, athletes have access to tutors, etc. Normal students have the same access to tutors. They just never take them. My wife never got any special treatment from professors and the basketball/football players I interacted with while at school never got any special treatment either.



Matt Montague was in several of my classes at school and he and I were in various class groups. Guy was expected to have all his stuff in when everyone else did. We didn't cut him any slack in our groups, neither did the teacher and neither did he. If anything, he had to have his stuff in earlier than the rest of us because he was on the road so much.

I'm pretty sure Elder D Todd Christpherson was sitting next to Pres Samuelson in the SDSU game.

Unfortunately being an athlete can be detrimental to your grade. I had a few classes that based part of their grade on attendance, Because of travel, I ended up missing sometimes as much as 1/3 of my classes, which cost me dearly in my grades, even though I found a way to do all of my work. I still graduated with a 3.5 - so I don't feel too bad.

Just so everyone knows: Harrison D and I both HATE BYU sports. We are very disappointed that they won tonight. Our hatred only extends to their sports, we do love their Accounting program.

While BYU sports might spread the gospel to people who wouldn't normally hear it, you could use that argument with any other activity. Our study abroad program brings the church to people in many different countries, our accounting and isys programs compete and place in national competitions, we have music and dance teams that tour the world sharing their talents and testimonies, I could go on.

Haha. Wow. Well, I know there are a lot of hardcore BYU fans out there, and I'm not expecting to change your mind. As long as you don't expect to change my mind :). First off, I've never been a sports fan- don't understand how that much mon...ey can be used for a game when other places really need that money. Secondly, BYU football SUCKS. A lot. Let's compare it to betting on a horse. Let's say this horse was really good say... back in the 80's. Twenty years down the road when this horse can't run or barely stand there is no way I'm going to continue to bet or root for him just because I'm a "true fan". When a team starts getting awful you shouldn't claim that they are still the best. Thirdly, the fans are SO annoying. Somehow righteousness and winning seem to be related in their mind and it is total bull. Fourthly, the academic slack that most (not all) of the players get makes me really upset. I know a lot of hardworking moms and dads who attend school full time while working one or two jobs on top of that. They don't have homework exemptions, test extensions or personal help from the teacher in order for them to succeed at their job and I think they work WAY harder than any sports member. Fifthly, Jimmer Fredette sounds like a fancy ice cream cone. Again, I don't expect to change any minds, but you all wanted to know :)See More

Erin, I have never really cared for sports either but like it when I'm around and don't miss it when I'm too busy but ur last comment makes sooo much sense. I asked my teacher if there was anyway to take my test later next week since it closes the day I have to turn my keys in to our landlord and I told him how ill be packing moving and unpacking and cleaning all weekend and he looked at me funny. By the way tithng money has nothing to with sports and coaches salaries at BYU, it all comes from season ticket holders, student passes and boosters (i.e. rich generous doners, public and private). Tithing money pays for YOUR tuition and on... campus buildings. I respect people that have different interests, for example if you just don't like sports, fair enough. But to attack BYU fans and claim that we hold "righteousness and winning" hand in hand is ridiculous. Some of us are simply lovers of the sport and want the Cougars to succeed. President Monson and many other GA's attend the games, they have special assigned seats on the front row in the Marriott Center. Nuff said.See More

well. ive seen TONS of people with that attitude... "God will help us win cause were mormon" its kinda a lame attitude. I never heard of the jimmer guy but I read up a little on him and granted he has talent for sure and Im glad to have sc...hool spirit, but the sports programs are pretty corupt. and to say nuff said cause GA's go to games, that has nothing to do with anything. They like basketball. that says nothing but that they like basketball. I have known MANY sports players that cuss and sleep around and DONT get kicked out of school because they are high profile players in sports (in the past) and thats MESSED up. Fans that have that attitude are just immature spiritually. Because there is agency you will see saints that live the gospel and those who don't in any area and imperfect people by the dozens. That doesn't mean that the church is all corrupt, nor BYU sports for that matter.

I'd change names but people shouldn't be able to hide behind their stance.

Tithing does not fund athletic scholarships. Period. The athletic program at BYU has been set up to stand on its own financially. About 70% of BYU's budget comes from church funds. This is used strictly for academic purposes, to pay salaries, subsidize tuition, etc. It's also important to remember that tithing is used under the direction of the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve and the Presiding Bishopric. I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing. :)



Lots of money goes into athletics because lots more money comes out of athletics. If the drama program(which it sounds to me like they have been a part of their entire lives) produced as much revenue as football then we'd see football type money being shoved into the drama program. It's basic economics.



PS- I've deleted many facebook friends because of their anti-BYU/anti-Mormon sentiments. I decided that deleting them was better than fighting them.

I took my 2-month-old daughter to class with me for a whole semester and did get special treatment (although not all professors are as nice as mine were), so that "They should..." argument is, at least in some cases, "They do."

I have been in a number of classes with football players, basketball players, yell leaders, even a member of the rugby team. They all got special attention from the teachers and got to take tests at different times. The only difference? They usually had to take their tests days earlier than everyone else, and have their home work in in advance of the due dates.



I will admit though that I was never close enough friends with any of them to ask how many times they slept around or broke the word of wisdom.

People often asked how I walked away from a scholarship from utah and chose BYU.



1-Education

2-BYU sports

3-Girls

4-Beautiful Campus/Eatery's



I guess I'm somehow self-righteous for choosing the best.

There are a lot more non-athletes at BYU sleeping around and breaking the word of wisdom than there are athletes. Plenty of that stuff goes on at BYU. Just ask a BYU bishop how many members of his ward have broken the law of chastity in some form or another...and those are the ones he knows about.



Ugh...people like that give Mormons a bad name. Sounds to me like her spot at BYU should be taken away and given to some pure, hard-working, BYU fan.

Just sad. I didn't think they let people so lacking in education into BYU.

On Sports center he was asked straight up why he chose to be Mormon over catholic as a kid.

Bitter people are just that, bitter. They hate life, they hate people who have fun and are successful at the same time (ie-athletes), and they always find something wrong and something to complain about. They suck and should die, the end.
