Um, how does the imminent doom of the WAC affect scheduling?

I realize we'll be okay for next year because none of the moves happen until the 2012 season (btw, that's the last I heard -- UNR and Fresno got a lawsuit threat from the WAC and they caved - staying in '11. Is it still correct?).



First of all, in the immediate future, we've got both of the rumored defectors on our schedule for next year. Is there ANY way that could change with their entrance into the MWC (is Hair THAT vindictive, and could he make that happen)?



Secondly, as I understood it, the idea for the forseeable future was filling the doldrums of the season when everyone else is playing conference games with the WAC teams due to the agreement. If the WAC goes belly up after next season, as it sure LOOKS like they will, who are we going to fill the schedule with?



'Cuz I could sure see Hair and the (now) 12 dwarves really liking the added perk of screwing BYU out of a full schedule with their plundering of the WAC.



Anybody with info on our future scheduling as it relates to the WAC?

Ya whoever the wac replaces them with. San Antonio state, Denver, SLCC...etc, that's who BYU could play. BYU plays less and less of these over the years so only a few more crappy games here and there and we'll have moved on anyways.

Now that there is $5 million buyout on all these teams and iirc Hair was going to pony up and help those defecting it brings 2 questions to my mind:

1) Where does Hair get all the $ to buy these teams out of the WAC to the MWC

2) If the MWC doesn't help them out where do they each come up with an extra $5 mil?

3) Who in the WAC gets all the $5 mil donations? University of Denver etc.?

I don't really think it affects us all that much. If we are desperate, we can always schedule the independent army/navy/air force types to come and play.



The reason I think it doesn't matter, is the promise to play on ESPN is too much of an opportunity to pass up for a lot of schools. If anything, this gives us MORE home games, then less, because we will use the ESPN chip to lure schools in.

Even with ESPN, I'm not sure if it's as simple as that. Once conference play begins for most schools in October, BYU is at the mercy of conference that give teams byes during the conference schedule. Not every conference does this. Even schools that have byes in their conference schedule might want to take the opportunity to get health and finish out the conference schedule.



If BYU and ESPN can make worth a teams' time and money to play BYU, then those concerns will be alleviated, but most of BYU's announced matchups (other than WAC and Notre Dame) are for early October. BYU should schedule a long term deal with USU so that the MWC has to schedule around it. And if BYU can negotiate with the Pac 12 to free up Utah on Notre Dame-USC weekend, that's on less October/November slot BYU has to fill.

The question is how many conference games will they schedule. If they schedule 9 it will make things difficult. If only eight, the AD should still be able to get 4 games out of those teams. Of course who knows if the AD will want to schedule them with their TV contract though.



The 9 game schedules for the PAC12 and Big12 are killing scheduling as well.



What BYU needs would be USU on a perpetual 2 or 3 home games for away games and one or two other similar partners (SJSU, Idaho) so they play 7-8 games in Provo per year.



Where this does help is a conference championship game in the MWC will make it more difficult for the conference champion to remain undefeated and take a BCS bid from BYU.
