G D.J. Gay: game "is either going to be an 'I told you so,' or 'Wow, they're really that good.' "

Was the "Wow, they're really that good.' " a jab towards us??

No it was not. It is a jab at themselves. In the original article this quote came from, Gay is saying that if SDSU loses to BYU, their critics will say I told you so - SDSU does not deserve to be #4 - prior to this statement.

In the stmt you quoted above, Gay follows with - if SDSU beats BYU, SDSU critics will say wow - SDSU really is that good, having beaten us - implying that we are pretty good. True and this statement is a compliment to BYU.

I would say pretty much the reverse is true as well. If BYU loses, BYU critics will say I told you so - especially Ute Trolls. Just watch them come from out of the woodwork. If BYU wins, our critics, other than Ute Trolls, will say WoW - BYU is pretty good. That is because they are assuming our bigs are going to foul out and our shooters are going to go cold and we are going to lose.

even if we lose vs. SDSU, you don't get to a #1 RPI multiple times in a year without doing SOMETHING right.

Right, like play a lot of games away from home so they count more than home wins. Remember, our RPI is inflated to a certain extent because of all our road and neutral games.

.... except that we won all but one of those games, which are harder to win than home games, which is accounted for in the RPI calculations. That is to say, it is very difficult to have an inflated RPI after about 10 games into the season because once the RPI algorithm has enough information to compare teams to each other it accounts for most, if not all, of the measurable factors that make one team better than another or one schedule further tougher or one win more impressive than another

No, our RPI is still inflated. Two hypothetical teams. In the RPI, home wins count for something like 0.75 wins, a neutral win is worth 1 win and a road win worth 1.25 wins.

Both have 20 wins. Team A has 15 home wins and 3 road and 2 neutral wins. Team B has 8 home wins and 4 road and 8 neutral wins.

Team A from the RPI perspective is only being credited with 11.25 wins for the home wins 3.75 wins for the road wins and 2 wins for the neutral wins. The RPI sees them as only have won 17 games.

Team B is being credited with 6 home wins, 8 neutral wins and 5 road wins. So the RPI sees Team B has having 19 wins.

The RPI doesn't see either team as having 20 wins, but they see Team B with nearly 12% more wins. So Team B's RPI is going to be much better.

Which is completely fair, because road games are harder to win, thus not really inflated.

You say "inflated" - while I think "enhanced" is a better word choice here.

Also, there is a weighting depending on how good the team is that you're playing against.

Yep.

Right, but it doesn't change the fact that RPI isn't the best way to judge which teams are the best. The RPI is a formula that can be manipulated, enhanced, inflated.

BYU is a good team. Are the best team in the land? The RPI says so. Do I think BYU is getting shafted by media pundits? Yes, because while we may not be an elite team or the No. 1 team and while we haven't played the "toughest" schedule like a Big East team, I don't think we're getting enough credit for what we have done. No one in the top 10 has played as much away from home as we have and we should get more credit for that than we are.

Let me get this straight, kitic doesn't like playoffs or RPI. So how do you determine who is number uno. Just trying to figure out how kitic's brain works.

I never said I don't like the RPI. What I was saying is that the RPI can be manipulated. And BYU has found a great way to counter their lack of elite opponents like the Big East has or the lack of perceived strength like the Big East has.

I don't like the playoffs because I think it cheapens the regular season. I think playoffs can tell you was the best team at the end of the year and may not tell you who was the best during the year.

Maybe the NCAA could come up with some way of simply matching the #1 and #2 in basketball. Perhaps use a complex formula that takes voter polls into account. We could call it the Basketball Championship Series.

I dunno.

BYU ranks 17th SOS, probably pretty comparable or higher than most Big East schools.

Again, our SOS is so high, in part because of our plethora of non-home games. As I said, I don't think we're getting enough credit for what we have done. People, pundits and experts are looking at our insanely high RPI and saying there's no way BYU is THAT good. So they're not giving us credit for anything. They're not taking the time to actually look at BYU.

While we may not be #1 or even a top 5 team, we are certainly a lot better than they think we are. They don't look at our numbers and realize we're a pretty good defensive team and pretty good rebounding team. That we're not just Jimmer. They don't want their opinion that we can't be THAT good to be wrong, so they're not doing their homework.

They look at our RPI and say, we know it's inflated, so we're just going to discount everything they've done. Look at Syracuse, they've lost three in a row. Why do I think they've struggled so much the last week? I think it's because they've played so many home games where they didn't struggle and weren't tested. Conversely, BYU went on the road a TON to start the year. The fought through struggles, came together as a team and know how to fight back when things start getting rough. They learned how to win ugly, how to stop opponent's runs, how to win.

This is a reason we're going to win tonight.
