If the MWC adds USU and SJSU as rumored - who is most inept

These days we tend to bag on the MWC - but then who doesn't? We despise Hair and the MWC teams for riding our coat-tails, refusing to give us a larger slice of the pie, and not appreciating all that we have done for them. So we split off and went independent in football and to the WCC for almost everything else. Fair enough.



A decade or so ago, we and Hair and these same MWC teams, for the most part, despised Benson and the WAC teams for the same thing - split off and started the MWC.



Meanwhile, USU, who once upon a time was one of the last Independents, and wanted to be in the WAC when BYU and Utah were in the WAC - only got into the WAC after BYU and Utah went to the MWC. Then USU wanted to be in the MWC and will only get there now that Utah and BYU have left the MWC. So now USU is no longer Independent and is in the MWC. BYU is no longer in the MWC and is Independent. Have we swithced places? Independence should work better for BYU and we are all excited about it.



But who is most inept?

If this rumor is true - I gotta go with Benson. He is out of business. If this rumor is not true - it is close bewteen USU AD and Benson, but I still gotta go with Benson for probably still being out of business and taking USU and a bunch of others down the drain with him. The Big West folded football so long ago, nobody remembers who their commish was. He sure would be a contender.



There is not much to work with in the west outside of the PAC 12 and Big 12-2 markets. Basically BYU and with a huge stretch - BSU due to the quality of thier team. Hair has survived for now. The PAC 12 and Big Sky seem to have survived in their respective worlds even though the PAC whiffed on that Big 12 thing. And the Big 12-2 sort of survived, but with a little egg on their face due to Nebraska and Colorado.

Holmoe? Really? That's ridiculously stupid.

Tough to go against Benson who has basically watched his conference disentigrate. Any moves he made to try and prevent the exodus from his conference failed. Look at the "new" MWC. It's basically the WAC. So all the WAC teams that joined the "new" MWC said they like being with their fellow schools but would rather be called the MWC and not the WAC.

At the conclusion of its annual January meeting, the MWC Board of Directors issued the following statement.



"Over the past two days, the Board of Directors has engaged in a very thorough discussion of several key topics pertinent to the future of the Mountain West Conference. This has included, but not been limited to, issues related to television, the Bowl Championship Series and membership. The Board feels strongly the membership configuration already established going forward creates outstanding prospects for future success. In addition, we are continuing with our strategic initiatives related to our television partnerships and the MWC's efforts to effect change in the BCS structure. The Board is excited about what is undoubtedly a bright future for the Conference."





Unless I'm reading that wrong, they aren't going to invite USU or SJSU.

So, quick clarifiacation. Failure does not indicate ineptitude.



USU got taken for a ride by two conference partners they trusted. Had Fresno and Nevada stuck to their word, we'd be talking about the demise of the MWC instead of the WAC but instead USU is called inept for trusting someone's agreement.



That's not ineptitude in my book.

This is an easy one. It has to be the PAC commish. He picked Utah and Colorado over BYU.

I don't expect Holmoe or several other people on this list to get any votes. I just didn't want anyone to feel like their choices were limited by the question. I actually think everyone but Benson and the long defunct Big West football commissioner are doing a great job working with what they have. I might even think USU would get some consideration for a vote. .



Benson and USU - although another poster pointed out that they had a plan that could have and almost did go the other way, they miscalculated and did not get a tight enough contract from their friends. Trusting the wrong people is ineptitude and on something this big - that is why they have lawers and contracts. Trust - as was proven in this case - is not an option.



The others have done imperfectly, but again, imho, are doing a pretty good job.



Holmoe almost gets sucked into the Benson, USU, ineptitude, but he had a much nicer recovery than the other two. USU may eventually recover just fine if the MWC extends another offer and if they do - a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush if you have a solid contract with the bird in the hand.



PAC Commish got egg for whiffing his Big 12 maneuver and went from genius to goat and tried to rebound with Utah and Colorado. Coulda, woulda, shoulda taken BYU. But his conference members are happy and strong.



Big 12 Coomish was called an idiot and then became a genius when he turned around the PAC 10 revolt. But he lost Nebraska and Colorado and didn't have the sense to grab BYU and TCU.



Big Sky - well they survived and whupped the WAC's butt on some expansion decisions.



Long way of saying it - but I agree - Holmoe is dong a great job but just needs to quit giving 2fers.

Disagree. that is what contracts are for. Benson, USU, BYU, and a few others invovled miscalculated. Trust is never a good substitute for a good contract. It might be a great supplement to one - but when push comes to shove - contracts hold up in court when well-written.



BYU recovered nicely from this miscalculation. WAC and USU did not - yet. USU has a glimmer of hope. The WAC has a tinier glimmer of hope until the MWC does the right thing and finishes them off with a knockout blow.
