Is this the biggest game in modern BYU history

I can't think of a bigger regular season game.



If you don't think it is, please list the bigger one(s).

Kitic, you didn't vote!!!! BTW, how far back does modern history go? Would that include the year when BYU took the NIT?

My life span: 1977.

Regular season game...ya i guess so. I voted the other way though before I saw it said regular season.

I would list Michigan 1984 and Miami in Ty's Heisman season - but this is a basketball thread, so I will stick to basketball.



This goes back a ways - but our NCAA Tournament in the sweet 16 Vs Notre Dame was huge because it was in the tournament, we were Cinderella and a clear underdog iirc, and since it was in the tournament, all the combatants were proven. This game is early in the season, and time will tell how these teams are viewed in the end. Now I do realize that the MWC Title could be on the line in this, our last MWC season - but that remains to be seen too as it is still early in the season adn a lot can happen between now and the end. SDSU does not have the national brand recognition of Notre Dame. BUt it is the biggest game in the country Wednesday night.



Now the game after Nore Dame was actually bigger than the Notre Dame game - Elite 8 iirc. But we lost that one.



If you went back further, I still am certain that a #3 St. Josephs team came into the MC back when it was still the MAC, and BYU beat them - Kresimir Cosic in about 1970.



Now if SDSU was #2, like they should be - a tougher call.



Another game, I would list as bigger, would be the night all BYU had to do was beat unranked UAB on thjeir court to become #1 in the country at 18-0 - but UAB killed us.



So all of thosepast games have the disadvantage of we know how they turned out.



We may have a SDSU game or two later this season that are bigger than this one because the conference championship and tournament championship may truly be on the line that late in the season - or heaven forbid, and / or they could still be undefeated. OK - I know - that is the future - not history.



Speaking of future - after the ND win tonight - I would not mind seeing a sweet 16 rematch with those guys to help answerr th einevitable question coming later about Jimmer vs Danny.

I think it is but for some of the wrong reasons. With the media the way it is we need to keep riding the wave of notoriety Jimmer has brought the program. They love us til we lose basically. And since seeding is everything, the selection committee will focus intensely on this game--is BYU another 7-8 seed average team or are they truly ready to take the next step and race into the tourney as a 2 or 3? College sports are so much about hype--and we are at perhaps the highest peak we've ever been at as far as hype goes. This game could solidify what everyone is beginning to perhaps believe...which is why it's the biggest game in modern bball history.

You may be thinking about 4 Dec 1971 St Josephs played BYU at the MAC and BYU won 73-72. St Josephs was not ranked but BYU was at #15. The next week we jumped to #6 after also beating New Mexico St and Creighton.

1986 or 87 at UAB. Michael Smith, Andy TOolson, Marty Haws (memory fails and I can't recall all the details). We were undefeated and ranked in the top 10. UAB mopped the floor with us. I was despondent.



The next day, my Young Men's advisor--a HUGE Purdue fan--was leading the opening hymn in Priesthood Opening Exercises and he had pinned note cards to his shirt, all with the UAB logo on them. So when he moved his arms, you'd see these UAB logos. I almost left. :sick:

It is only the biggest game for BYU...ever or in state of Utah, if we win. The Utah/TCU game in SLC this last fall was touted as about the same caliber of contests, but I learned then that it's only the biggest game if you win. For Utah fans they will not now say it was the biggest game ever because probably the Sugar Bowl has that title, but it would have been had they won.



If you lose, that game actually loses that distinction for your team and becomes one of the largest ever "almost" or "biggest impact" or something, but not your biggest game ever.



It does qualify as the biggest game ever for the MWC regardless of who wins.



Here's hoping late tomorrow night that we can with emphasis say that it was the biggest game for BYU ever.

Just out of curiosity for those that were here in Utah's hey day, were they ever a #1 seed?

They made the championship game one year, but I don't believe they were a #1 seed.

In December 1965 St. Joseph's (ranked 2) came to the Smith Fieldhouse, and was worked 102-82 by the unranked Cougars (rankings only showed top ten at the time. after the game, the cougs were rated 6).



This was the season BYU won its second NIT championship.
