Utah St. to join the MWC

I'm hearing from a few sources that Utah State has accepted an offer to join a 12 team MWC. I guess the MTN gets to keep the strong Utah market after all.

The other team joining the MWC is SJSU, which I mentioned hearing about a week or so ago in one of the game chats.



The MTN actually believes they'll be able to tap into the Bay Area market with SJSU. :skeptic:

Both smart moves. The west is no longer big enough for the MWC and the WAC. The MWC is in survival mode as was the WAC and only one of them will survive in any form resembling what either of them once was. It looks to be the MWC. I doubt they expect anything earth shattering to come from these moves other than survival, a conference championship game, a couple of extra nickels to offset the dimes of tv revenue they lost with Utah, BYU, and TCU leaving but BSU, FSU, UNR, SJSU, and USU and Hawaii coming on.



There only other choice would have been to sit back and let the WAC do this to them.



We all need to get over it. We went Independent in football and elsewhere for the other sports and the MWC will scrap and scrimp and try to survive another year before the BCS comes raiding again.

Good for Utah St, I am glad they aren't getting completely screwed for sticking up for BYU last year but too bad they have to be associated with Hair.

Agreed, the WAC is now dead-conference-walking and it'd be a shame for the USU to make the jump into a somewhat stronger version of the 2010 WAC. USU basketball will do well with better competition in UNLV, SDSU, and UNM. USU Football will struggle in conference record-wise but will be better-off than essentially playing (somewhat) glorified DII ball in the 2012 WAC.

It is absolutely appropriate news (at least a dang interesting rumor at this point). I find it very interesting. I am glad it was reported here. That is why I come here. I was just reacting to the last sentence of the orignal SJSU post, not the news content. And I think we are in total agreement - the MWC is not going to get any huge market penetration from any of their schools including the two just added.



I think the jab at MWC thinking that they will penetrate the bay market, misses the point. I doubt that this is really why the MWC would make the move. Yes, it will be given as justification, and the MTN will use it to try to get more revenue out of advertisers, but the real reason the MWC would do this is survival of the fittest and a desire to be the predator rather than be preyed upon. But I doubt we will see any presser where the MWC states its objective is to kill the WAC. They will never admit it. The BCS will never admit to trying to squash the MWC like a bug either. Oracle will never admit that they bought PeopleSoft to kill it. Too many antitrust suits to worry about.



Now - is this news or a rumor. I really hope it is true. I am so happy for USU. I don't care about SJSU - other than it is time for the WAC to die and who else would they pick. OK - Idaho or something. I would actually prefer Idaho, keeping with the bias I have that college athletics shoud be a regional sport.



But we are in agreement. The MWC is not going to make any big market penetration or revenue splash and will need to sit back and hope that consolidation of the two conferences into one will make a BCS AQ miracle happen - not very good odds of that working - or that they just survive another season or a few until the BCS comes to pick off anyone who emerges as a BCS Buster. Let's hope BYU is the next team picked off by the BCS.

this is perfect for BYU. BYU just tells USU that they'll continue playing them, but never in Logan if it has to be on the mtn..

I'm sorry, but adding utah state, san jose, nevada, fresno, etc. Will not allow or increase chance of the conference to become a BcS AQ. If hair really thinks that then the hair on his head comes from southern regions. Taint gonna happen.

I doubt that he holds up much probability if even possibility of that. So what should he do - give up? This was about survival. MWC Vs WAC. Knockout punch. The WAC took its shot and lost and the combination punches thrown in return - well knockout.

I know it's about survival. But the previous post mentions the possibility, and I shut it down...in case some hopeful aggies see it.

Just a realist with a new grandson - 1st one.

Utah State had only one chance to survive and they took it. I'm glad for it.



I think Karl Benson is a bigger tool than Craig Thompson, so I enjoy the downfall of the WAC for that regard. The MTN wont last, they'll be playing wed games on ESPN in a year.
