Could Jimmer win national player of year but not MWC

It's hard to fathom, but that's what could happen if San Diego State ends up winning the MWC title over BYU, a decent possibility considering that the Aztecs are ranked No. 6 with the nation's longest winning streak.



For the past seven years, the winner of the MWC player of the year has come from a team that won the league title or tied for it. It happened last year when Fredette was passed over as the MWC POY by New Mexico's Darington Hobson, despite enjoying superior numbers.



You have to go back to 2002-03 to find a player from a non-champion team that earned POY honors. That's when Utah and BYU tied for the MWC title, but Ruben Douglas of 4-10 New Mexico won the award after averaging 32 points per game in league play.

What's harder to fathom is SDSU winning an outright conference championship. What's most likely is BYU and SDSU split their season series and both drop a road game along the way. I can see both finishing at 15-1 or 14-2.



Either way, Jimmer will be the player of the year.

No question. Before NM won it last year, Hair announced his plans for choosing future POY. Anytime a player is nationally recognized it's because the nation doesn't know all the facts, hence their rubbish decision.



I think they decided on their favorite player before preseason even started, and it's not Jimmer. It would be poetic justice for Jimmer to win the b-ball Heisman (whatever it's really called) if not the mwc poy. And it's funny that's a real possibility.

Pathetic. Perhaps they are smart enough to know that their hate and bias against BYU would be further exposed and may not want that much more evidence to come out...but that's giving them a lot of intelligence credit.

There hasn't been anyone as consistently good as Jimmer in the MWC this season. Not in non-conference play, not in conference play thus far. Other guys have played well for a game or two in a row, but no one has dominated just about every single game they've played like Jimmer.



Jimmer hasn't disappeared in game this year. Sorensen mentions Leonard, but Leonard only had 10 and 10 vs Air Force. Noah Hartsock had 12 and 11 vs AF. Jimmer has been the best player on the court every night this year. Kawhi hasn't.

I would say no. He's already won the POW award too many times to be denied. Last year, it was split pretty evenly between Jimmer and Hobbs from UNM.
