Mark Atuaia as a new offensive coach

Mark Atuaia should be strongly considered for the new coaching vacancy. I say this because Robert Anae (no matter how you felt about his play calling ability) left a hole in the Polynesian community from a football and educational standpoint. Mark Atuaia can fill that void--and then some. I grew up in Hawaii when Mark played at Kahuku high school. They've all seemed to go to other places, but I'm confident Mark can change that. Bronco loves him and keeps him around the program. It just seems like the perfect move. I read a blog Vai Sikahema wrote that endorsed Mark for the position. I hope he can be retained on Staff in some capacity--if not as an assistant. However, I think he'd make a great coach.

I agree that we need someone who can recruit Polynesians well. They are all about family and their culture.

I wouldn't be upset at all if Reynolds went to an administrative job and the last 2 hires were Atuaia and Cahoon; with one caveat... Mark has to be certain he can recruit the islands and has the right connections... we know how tricky and politcal that entire situation is. If you get on their bad side it seems you stay there.

I thought Doman was partially a Polynesian name.

And we do still have Kafusi.

Next week we will work on pronunciation - the "au" in combination is significant. And next time Steve Kaufusi visits my ward, I will mention that you don't think the spelling of his name is important - maybe not - he is huge. ;)

Shouldn't Bibster have two b's? Or maybe a hyphen at least? ;-)

Bronco and Doman do just fine recruiting out there. Culture is important but faith and family come first and both of them have established that with the poly community (not just in Hawaii). When Bronco shows up in Hawaii it is a HUGE deal. If I could make a suggestion to him it would be to hold more firesides there and it would cement more recruits. Hold one at the Canon's center (BYUH) or at least at the Laie Stake center as well as one at the Honolulu tabernacle about twice a year. Or better yet, hold a service project before the fireside and then do the fireside after at that location or close to it. If there is one thing Poly's love it is doing service projects (then eating after :)). I would bet an internal organ that those projects would solidify recruits. Not only would the fireside talk the religion but the project would live the religion.

Uh I think you found a nice way to put it. Just don't repeat it around Sam's and you should be fine. ;)

From what I have read, Mark is boarderline celebrity in Hawaii (and his wife is a full fledged celebrity).



I also read that he had some very specific plans on what to do after he gets his law degree, so I don't know if he will change that to be a coach.



It might be better to have him back in Hawaii as a booster/distinguished alumni.

2nd place in recruiting out there is not what we need. You could make an argument that with Teo, Schwenke, and Jamora, that 2011-12 would be the best defense in BYU history and honestly maybe in the country if our dbs work out.



There's currently not an understanding between the elite LDS athletes and the islands and BYU; Bronco and Brandon have not fixed that rift and I won't believe they have until we see an elite polynesian player from that area commit and stick.



I know of the character issues and of course we see it 1st hand 2 years ago at the recruiting trip at BYU, but something needs to be healed there or we need to walk away. That's a lot of time to spend out there if it's a dead end on signing day.

Whatsmyname - I added Atuaia to my "Who do you really want" poll because of this thread, but so far he is the only guy with no votes. Did you vote for someone else? Any way - vote early and vote often and support your nominee.
