New Student Seating in LES

They're holding a forum at the Marriott Center at 6 tonight before the game to let the students know what the plan is:

Basically, consolidate them all in the SE corner where the team enters and exits. I'm assuming this is a done deal and the forum is just a typical BYU gesture of pretending to get input.

Think its a great idea to put all the students together, think its crap to stick them all in the endzone.

This has been in the works for the last 4 years. I was in on some of the initial meetings regarding this move and the increased revenue in this change is huge. Tom Holmoe and other administrators have wanted to make this move for a while and the timing with independence and ESPN coverage makes now as good a time as any.



One additional change I want to see is freestyle seating for football games similar to basketball. I was disgusted to see 1/4 full student sections at kickoff for several games this year. First come, first serve ensures a timely arrival and energetic atmosphere.

I like sticking them in the EZ and SE corner. All the way up to the top is great. Gives more room to sell lower seats to people willing to pay in the north or south EZ. Plus, creates a real student section, which is a good idea.



I just hope it improves my seat for 2011.

It practically is free-style seating now. If you've ever had great seats in the student section, you know that the kids just down the row from you are going to have every single person they know standing in their "2" seats with them.

I hope they put the band with the students.

The band used to be in that southeast endzone until 1998 or so when they moved to the north endzone. I agree, move the band to the student section where they're wanted. Oh, wait... :)

Good move for students. Leave the band in the north to drown out visiting bands and visiting fans.

Except they'll never drown out Utah's band. They will play the loudest AND through anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they play through the opening prayer next year.

Yay! Now we'll have one loud endzone and the rest of the stadium will be like the West Bleachers have been for years-silent (except all of the complaining, of course).

I think they should triple the size of the student section, that'll equal out the moves.

Will BYU make more money doing this? yes.

Will students be happy giving up their far superior sideline and east bleacher seats for terrible perspective and altitude seats? not a chance.

Would it change my decision to buy season student passes to future games? since I'm getting my masters in April,not me personally...I think students should go where they can impact games.

I never really liked the spread out student section, but at least it gave life to parts of the stadium. The concentrated student section is usually a good thing, though, especially if it is right behind the opponents bench......

which it wont be.

I liked the idea of a student section before, but I read Jason Franchuk's write-up on it and now I am really for the idea.



First of all, if BYU wants to remain a top tier program then they are going to need a way to bring in more revenue and this will do that.



Secondly, we hear a bunch about the M.U.S.S. when it is just 1/3 of what BYU's student section would be. BYU's student section would be truly formidable.



Finally, I'm not a student, and I am guessing that few of the rest of you are either, and yet we bring it at the game. I live in SE Washington so the last game I made it to was the UW game in Seattle. We had a huge section of BYU fans up in the nose bleeds. I don't think any of them were students, but we definitely brought it.

Here are my thoughts on the Franchuk article:



1) How in the world do the neighborhoods around LES have the power to limit the noise of the stadium? The band is in the north endzone because the neighbors thought it may be too noisy?



2) It doesn't matter where the student section is as long as everyone sticks to the section.



3) Entry should be general admission. Early comers get the front seats.



4) You should be required to wear game-day blue. No blue, no seat. Peer pressure should enforce this.



White-outs are a basketball thing, for me. I don't think the football team identifies with white as much as the blue. But that's just me. Since blue doesn't shout look-at-me the students have to be extra loud.

The most coveted seats for students when I was there were in the card-stunt section. They were right around the 50-yard line, mid-level. Students had to agree to handle the card-stunts to sit there, but that just added to the atmosphere. Any chance they could bring that back? It could even be opened up to students on a first-come, first-serve basis.
