Why Joe DuPaix is a Brilliant Hire

With Joe DuPaix, Bronco and Doman have found not only someone who can take over the position coaching that Anae leaves behind as well as a great recruiter who understands how to recruit to institutions with above normal expectations for non-football qualifications, but DuPaix fills a void of experience that BYU needs moving forward--he knows how to sell an independent program not only to recruits, but to the players on the roster.



Beginning 2011, BYU football will not be playing for any regular season championships--there is no conference title to dangle as a carrot. The only big picture implications of each game are "how good of a bowl game can we get?" No one on the staff has experience in selling that to kids coming out of high school or to motivating kids on the roster to step up after a big loss without that conference championship at stake. DuPaix had been there, done that, and it's a perspective that will benefit BYU behind closed doors.

Here;s a question though, how much 'unity' do you really want on a coaching staff? That's great that Doman and DuPaix are friends, but what happens when Doman needs to discipline his 'friend' or reign him in or pull rank out of necessity. Some disagreement is perfectly healthy and helps avoid 'groupthink'.



Obviously you hope things like that never happen and that you can work in perfect harmony, but frankly, bosses and friends are not the best management mix.

Agree. Plus 1. Every rumored or desired candidate here and elsewhere has pluses and minuses and DuPaix seems to be a nice mix of potential and experience. Like any hire, change has risk, but this is a solid choice.

He did have the Commander-in-Chief trophy which has heavier implications then the Beehive boot. But I like that he's a younger guy, I think our staff getting 10-15 years younger in several spots will help us be "more with it" in terms of aggressiveness and competition.

I agree with your point about mixing friends and business and would also say the same about family and business. Even perceived favoritism when there is none can cause problems like Roger Reid encountered coaching two sons when Cuff thought he deserved more PT. Led to a mutiny.

I have not read anything indicating that they are close friends although they attended the same High School and DuPaix senior coached there. They almost had to know each other. But how many years separate them? Did Doman play for Coach DuPaix? Were the constant companions on and off the field - or just acquaintances? IDK just asking.



Doman was quoted in the Presser as saying DuPaix is a BYU guy. That one threw me. He didn't play here - don't recall any other DuPaix duly members. There might have been some. I just found that remark surprising as I viewed him as not being a BYU guy, but actually contributing some diversity, but being someone who will fit in well and who could become a BYU guy.



Anyway- if someone knows, the closeness of their friendship and the DuPaix family ties to BYU would be interesting to know.

Yeah, the BYU guy line is a bit odd. I guess he's a BYU guy if by BYU guy you mean he's from the same state that BYU is in. Or that he played for a junior college that routinely sends players to BYU. Or maybe he's a BYU guy because his dad coached a current BYU coach.



He may have the "BYU guy" mentality that Bronco et al are looking for, but he's certainly not a BYU guy in the sense that Michigan was looking for a Michigan Man.

I thought the 'BYU guy' line had to do with the energy and determination he brought being in line with Bronco's vision.

DuPaix could also be a good hire if Cahoon does come on board - given the experience he has, he could help mentor Ben.

IIRC Joey graduated in 91 and Brandon in 94. And yes Brandon played for Roger DuPaix(the best HS coach in the history of Utah HS football). Also, I can't remember what year Doman's older brothers Bryce and Cliff graduated, but I'm sure one of them would have overlapped some with Joey. I want to say Cliff Graduated in 92 but I could be wrong.



And just FYI, his dad played for BYU back in the day.

Good question Cougarclaw.

I would simply add the old maxim that "Competition and Cooperation, when blended, create great synergy."

The old regime did not have synergy and it stemmed, IMO, from limited cooperation.

I doubt any of these guys are push-overs, which makes them high in competitiveness. But the unity/cooperation piece seems to have great potential.

I think Bronco has learned that, painfully in the first half of this year, and triumphantly in the latter part of this year.

Pretty sure Joey would have gone to BYU given the chance, but as a running qb he really had no chance. I don't remember if he was a BYU fan specifically, but we did sneak into the Miami game and stormed the field together.

Cliffy was 92 and Bryce was 88. I'm not sure how close Brandon and Joe are, but they never played or coached together.



They are FB friends, as I noticed Brandon post this on Joe's wall in response to an article about Roger Dupaix winning his 400th game:



"I love your dad and everything he stands for!! We are all better because of him. Go Eagles!!!"

Is President Samuelson a converted BYU guy yet? He was an avid Ute supporter prior to his appointment at BYU. So maybe it is possible to have an outsider join the ranks of "supporter".....

Sounds like you may have played for Roger?

I'd have to say I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't know if Brilliant is the right word but he does have pluses and minuses as discussed. I guess my only reservation is he comes from a very run oriented background and I'm not sure how that fits into BYU's offense. Hopefully he'll have a very short learning curve. I do trust in Bronco and staff so if they like him, that's enough for me!!!

Yes, I played for Coach DuPaix. He truly is great man and that article is a good summary of what he's all about.

Yes, heaven forbid DuPaix comes in and turns BYU into an offensive powerhouse that uses the run often to demolish teams.



We don't have the O-line for it, or the running backs. And even if it miraculously worked, it wouldn't be "fun" to watch.
