Mountain West Respect - of sorts

TItled What Could Have Been - taken from CBS Sportsline and talks about the MWC only bowl loss being Utah losing to incoming MWC Boise State.



Sorry - I don't hate the MWC. I do hate the MTN contract and the BCS and the SEC and East Coast Bias.

I just hate how defensive all the MWC teams got after BYU left. Obviously they wanted to keep BYU in the conference, but didn't get enough pressure on the commish/comcast/whoever it took to get BYU what they wanted. Although maybe Comcast or whoever was making the ultimate decision as to whether BYU should receive the concessions was ready for the whole mtn. project to just die anyway.



Also I hated the hypocrisy that is TCU fans and MWC fans in general regarding team departures from the MWC. TCU and Utah (who really should get most of the flame for setting everything in motion) left to parades. BYU on the other hand was portrayed as the ultimate villian in the conference mix up.

I only care about the MWC in bball right now. I have no interest in the MWC in football anymore. I don't care who UNLV, New Mexico, Colorado St or Wyoming play or how they do against them. I don't care who coaches them. I have no desire to read about them or the MWC or "what might have been."



In about three months, I won't care about them in bball anymore either.



I don't hate the MWC or the Mtn, because they are so close to no longer being a part of BYU that they're largely irrelevant to me now.

They are irrelevant, but to hear news of the collapse of the mtn (and firings of certain people), and a pathetic loss to a D-2 opponent, that would bring a smile to my face, even if only for a moment.

The mtn was a dynamic and daring plan when it was founded. The fact that it turned into a disaster largely due to terrible TV partners and an untimely merger is more an indictment of them than our lack of bargaining prowess.



Can you imagine where we'd be if Utah had turned the Pac-12 down because the mtn figured out what kind of conference they had on their hands?Can you imagine if BYU and TCU didn't feel pushed out?



I love the independence move and it was a fantastic second choice. But you can't tell me our basketball league would have been better in the complete MWC. Or If Utah hadn't betrayed the rivalry it would have been better to continue playing for championships against them, and a league with Utah, TCU, BYU and the donkeys including a rising SDSU and air force, I believe would have received become an AQ conference.



Even with less money, I would have preferred the MWC route. But not at the exposure price the mtn demanded. I'm just in such shock about what the mtn/Comcast/dish (whoever) let slip away.

It is unfortunate how many years were left on that contract. Other networks coming up for renewal were delivering truckloads of money to keep their leagues signed up and the MTN had an iron clad agreement already in place far into the future. The MWC had no clout because of that contract. They signed up for the MTN before the MWC proved themselves on the field.



All the tangled web of other cable companies not being willing to deal with terms and conditions and likewise Dish networks kept the footprint tiny and Comcast seemed more concerned about controlling 100% of the little pie - others might have been willing or preferred 50% of a huge pie.



The MWC would have had power when the MTN contract expired. It was just too long to wait out. It is rarely good to burn bridges, though. The MTN contract will expire eventually and the MWC probably will not renew unless terms and conditions change dramatically.



Who knows - we may need to play some of them again if everyone else keeps refusing to play us on equal home and away terms and especially if our schedule fillers from the WAC implode as expected.



MWC may pilfer a couple of more teams we are using to fill our schedule and make matters worse.



We went independent, will get better exposure and more money, they are still stuck with the MTN mess. Be happy.

You know I've seen that movie, BYU moves on meets a great person, has a historic career and profession, becomes a legendary celeb and is a household name. Whereas, the mtn struggles to meet anyone, gets into drugs, gets really fat due to eating crisco like ice cream, tries to recover by joining the army, but gets kicked out and hits the streets again to hold up signs petitioning motorists to help the mtn back on its feet.

Read more carefully and throw your barbs with more accuracy and precision. Do you know of any BYU fan or for that matter any fan if any MWC team that likes the MTN. I stated quite clearly I hate the MTN. I have not heard anyone in recent years say they like the MTN. Some people, not us starting next year, are still stuck with the MTN, but I doubt that anyone likes the MTN. I would bet that every MWC school wishes that TV contract was either never signed or that it expired several years ago. But, back when BYU and the rest of them signed it, they must have felt differently, because they signed up for about a decade of it iirc. That was a mistake. I do not like anything about the MTN and never had.





Now MWC - I just don't have the hatred for the MWC that I have for the MTN even though I totally agree that those teams benefitted greatly from BYU, never appreciated it, and often disrespected BYU. That is because we kicked their arses more often than not.



There is probably religious bias at times as well, but get used to that. We just got an even bigger dose of that from the PAC 12 and the BIG nn conferences.



I am not suggesting we suck up to the MWC. We did, along with Utah, TCU, and others build the MWC into a conference that earned a modicum of national respect. I take pride in that accomplishment.



I am not trying to argue with you here - but just sharing how a true fan can still be a true fan without hating the MWC. But I agree, it should be mandatory to gate the MTN unless they start letting us play MWC teams without the tv restrictions.



Until then, I pray for the MTN to collapse in bankruptcy ASAP for the good of what is left of the MWC.

you don't need to necessarily hate the teams in the mountain, but the organization itself... Hair and company are going to sow the bad vibes they have been reaping.

But, you probably mean reap what they have been sowing. First you Sow. Then it grows. Then you reap. iirc from my Heber Valley hay hauling background.

PS - I don't hate Hair either. First of all - he is stuck with that hair. but secondly, trying to control 9 universities, each with their own agenda, widely diverse from highly independent cowboys to regimented cadets is like cat herding without a horse. Then trying to create exconomic value for a geographic area with near zip population when TV advertising has become the entire ballgame is an insurmountable task. Hair had very little to work with and just lost almost everything but his hair. You can't hold it against him for fighting to save his conference at the end after Utah first, and then BYU took steps that nearly unravelled it. BYU made its move in secrecy - perhaps not quickly enough - perhaps not executed well in terms of contractual lock-in of WAC teams - MWC made theirs. The jury is still out as to how well this will work out for either. But Hair pretty much finished off the WAC. The West wasn't big enough anymore for two mid-major conferences. The MWC will probably continue to produce a successful team or two or three every year. The MWC is still stuck with the MTN and that will hurt as it does now. Hair probably also hates the MTN. How could he not hate the MTN? Hopefully if we ever need schedule filler, which I predict we will, we can get some 1 and dones or 2 for 1s from our old MWC foes. That would be poetic justice. Let them come roll over for us at LES year after year after year.

Hair treated us bad for years and years. Lied to us, stole from us, and he is getting what he deserves. You take care of the people that take care of you, not treat them like vermin. I am loving the R-I-P of the M-W-C.

Since the Mtn started broadcasting I have not missed a single football game on TV. Several games have also been broadcast on Versus and CBS-C. Since the Mtn started broadcasting I've managed to watch it in England, Qatar, and Kansas (Slingbox). When the Mtn made it to DirecTV the distribution argument took a massive hit. BYU fans simply needed to be willing to pay for the Sports tier.



The quality of the Mtn broadcasts improved every year, including a switch to HD starting with--yep--the BYU vs Utah game in 2009.



I felt slighted by the MWC when everyone rushed to justify Utah for leaving the conference but castigated BYU for doing the same thing. That and SDSU's replay-gate tantrum (and the MWC's actions as co-conspirator) are the things that have jaded my opinion of the MWC conference and a couple schools.



With this new TV deal exposure will be much improved with home games on ESPN and BYUtv, but don't forget that BYU will have to play 5-6 away games every year--none of which are guaranteed to be broadcast anywhere. Some may be on ESPN (WAC), some may be on CBS (SEC) or Fox (Pac-10). Some may even be on the Mtn (MWC). I just hope that all the games are on a basic cable package so I can continue to watch every single game.
