It worked on my iphone. What an impressive kid. And he is still just a kid. But - wow - and I am not talking about the football throw through the basketball hoop - WoW for that too - but WoW - this is leadership - not just on the football team but for BYU Athletics. It makes me really like the guy. He seems to take a "Program" perspective. His leadership in 2010 class recruiting made it the best class - probably ever. Too bad NCAA ties his hands now that he is on the team.



But for the most visible player on the football team to reach out and support the basketball team in a school where football clearly is KING and where OFFENSE is KING on the football team and he is the symbol of the offense - highly touted QB at the QB factory - most highly touted one ever - he didn't have to go to the trouble. But he did it.



Work hard Jake. 2011 will be fun - even if we are still trying to pick coaches in August.

Not sure who the "WE" consists of that your refer to. I have not applied for inclusion into any cheer leading club or for a seat on any band wagon. I want to remain independent. No offense intended. I will always call it like I see it. Balanced. Pluses and minuses. Neither extreme. Realistic. I don't expect anyone to agree with everything I say. Mutual respectful debate sure would add diversity though.



Let me respond to your comments one by one.



Contrition and confession.

I always expect every new coach or player no matter how highly touted to prove it on the field. Lavell, Crowton, Ben Olsen, O'Neal Chambers, all of them. That usually takes time. You never saw me say Jake Heaps did not have leadership qualities and POTENTIAL. Potential takes time to develop. I gave Jake Heaps props for his recruiting before he ever got here - because he deserved it, even though some accused him of grandstanding and being too full of himself with the press conference. I applauded his efforts and success. Still do. This leadership at the athletic program level pulling football in support of basketball is of a similar nature. It shows big picture thinking and action and willingness to take a little risk. I applaud it.



As for leadership on the field. I think Heaps has it now. He did not early on. It just takes time. If you read Bronco Mendenhall quotes last summer and going into the fall, he indicated that Nelson had the edge in that type of leadership. I happened to agree. I have connection to starters on the football team, and there was a divide at that time between the new, highly touted players including Jake Heaps and the veterans. That just took time to play out. If you followed Bronco, he did call out entitlement and work ethic early re the new players in general. He also credited adversity of the early season with helping create a tone that enabled fixing that.



Some players felt Heaps went home for a visit when he should have been working with the team in the offseason. I have heard others post in his defense that he was not invited to some of those. It just takes any new guy time to become the leader of a team. Nothing personal. I have always thought Jake Heaps was thrown to the wolves, out of necessity, too soon. Still do. He was a true freshman. Nothing personal. It just doesn't work well early and on the road and against tough teams and never when the offense and defense that should be taking pressure off the new QB are all new and still getting their act together.



You did see me start to call to see Lark or Munns just for a series or two (I called it a Look See) if Heaps didn't turn it around against the weaker opponents. If he hadn't, I would have kept calling for a series or two. Just to see if someone else could do better at that point in time. I didn't call for Heaps to be benched or disparage his long term potential. Heaps turned things around that next week and became the leader of that offense, and is well positioned for next year. It is Bronco that talks about open competiton for the starting role - not me.



We have four pretty decent QBs by reputation. Only Heaps is proven at this point. I respect all of them. I hope they are all great. I hope Jake Heaps never gets injured and that he continues to out reach all of them. But you need back-ups in college football. Stuff happens. You did hear me call for them to actually let Lark throw in garbage time - just to get him ready. BYU is short-sighted on that particular issue.



So bear with me



Say in 2009, when BYU did actually put Riley Nelson on the field the few times we had a big enough lead, that they turned him loose and let him really run things. I think they should have. It would have either better prepared him for 2010 or shown that he was not the guy, clearly, and they could have focused on figuring out who the guy was last Spring instead of thinking RIley might be it or might not. Wouldn't it have been nice - if that had cleared itself up one way or the other in 2009 through turning Nelson loose in game situations to run the BYU offense and see if he could do it, make a few mistakes, see if he learned from them, etc.



Fast forward to 2010 - wouldn't it have been nice if they let Lark truly run the offense the few times he was in, so we have a better idea of who to have ready to go number 2 and 3 in 2011 so we don't have to spend Spring figuring that out and hoping we get it right. Nothing personal to Heaps. You just neeed a back-up at all times.



I won't repond to the other points. Sorry, I respect all of our players and coaches. They have tough jobs. None are perfect. None are horrible. Any that are seeing the field deserve their scholarships. I appreciate them choosing to play for BYU.



I have no idea how good a healthy Riley Nelson is. I am not sure we ever saw a healthy Riley Nelson "turned loose" in 2009 and he was never healthy in 2010. Hopefully he won't be needed next year and it won't matter how good he is or isn't. If he is needed, hopefully he will be ready and good - same for Lark and Munns. I respect all of them.



Watch the Tim Tebow commercial where he talks about all the people that told him he couldn't play Div 1, Couldn't start, couldn't win a Heisman, couldn't win a NC, couldn't be a 1st round pick, couldn't play in the NFL. Then he flips a huge tire, is shown throwing through a small metal ring, and thanks all of his detractors for spurring him on. I guess that is the nature of many fans. I am much more supportive - but not blind. No player is perfect. Players on the field are not awful. They are all somewhere in between. That is just how I see it.



Regarding Jake working hard. If you read Bronco quotes, Heaps quotes, and other player quotes, they all acknowledged working harder once Bronco recpatured the heart and soul of the team - defense first - offense later. I credited Heaps for working harder and your club acts like I called him lazy. Things are not so black and white. No matter how hard you work, you can usually work harder. I went two miles this morning. I could have gone farther. Was I lazy? No, but I could have worked harder. I have never said Jake Heaps was not a hard worker. I credited him for working harder. So did he, Mendenhall, and others.



Jake's apologists seem to need someone else to blame for his every shortcoming. Luckily, I do not see Jake doing that. He seems pretty accountable and has acknowledged that he needs to improve. What freshman does not need to improve?



On balance I have been very positive about Jake Heaps, will continue to call it like I see it, plus and minus, don't need to be in the club or on the bandwagon, but I like how the kid is coming along. Too bad he didn't have Pitta, George, healthy OL early on, Unga, Collie, and a decent defense to take some pressure off him early. A new True Freshman QB deserves that. He survived and luckily did not get injured early when the blocking sucked. And the future looks bright as long as the new coaches don't screw it up. Because now, all that talent has another year of experience and almost everyone on offense is coming back.

I too, was impressed with Heaps. Both the talk and the throws. Say, what do you all think Jake's percentage was with those throws? 3 for 3? 3 for 5? 3 for 7? Back in the day, I heard a story from a first hand witness, that Jim McMahon threw a football through a hoop in the Smith Fieldhouse during off-practice hours. He did it 1 for 1 on a bet.



At any rate, I was not surprised to see Jake do that. It was still very cool to see, none the less.

Yes. I am not looking to jump on any bandwagons. Everyone has pluses and minuses. Heaps is coming along nicely. He inherited an impossible situation last fall with no supporting cast early on offense or defense, survived after a very rough start and is well positioned to be the man next season. Has grown into a leader on the field. Always was a leader in recruiting. Always liked him. Circumstances caused him to get thrown to the wolves too soon against a horrible early schedule.

If you are really trying to figure out who I am, it should not be too hard. I have shared more about who I am than most people on here combined. I have also told Hawk in private exactly who I am. If you really want to know, pm me, and although I really have never had the slightest curiosity who you are, I would be more than happy to get to know you - keep in mind you have shared absolutely nothing with me about who you are. Anyway, I am flattered that you are curious. BTW, you will find that I am exactly what I have indicated - no more and no less. Since DM Cougar keeps talking about himself as WE, I would be happy to have a conference call with the whole cartel. Not to impress you. Not to join your bandwagon.



But if any of you are serious about having respectful and accountable dialogue, I like those things.



And yes, after being called Max Hall's mother, father, sister, and brother for sticking up for his legacy which was not a popular stance in mid 2009 (but most of you like him now that he hates Utah and beat Utah and won the Bowl), and called the same relative to defending Riley Nelson, and called a troll for not jumping on blue goggles bandwagons or for not hating Anae, Utah, MWC, etc., I did punch back and call the Jake Heaps Apologists Cartel - or actually asked if you were - his little sisters. Well folks - I don't know if you are men or women or young or old or even all the same. But it was disrespectful, and whether you or DM were or were not one of the many who called me that same thing or worse dozens of times before that for having a different perspective, I apologize for stooping to those disrespectful tactics.



You will notice, that for quite some time since then, when people start the disrespectful name calling, I no longer return the insult. I point out that there is no need for disrespect, respond respectfully, as in this case and move on.



Let me assure you that I am not signing up for any bandwagon and will remain independent with praise and constructive criticism - even for the sacred cows. If you pay attention and want to be fair, you will find my comments to be quite balanced.



I do not point out my many connections to BYU academics and athletics to brag. As I have said each time I mention it, some people on here know exactly who I am and I make it clear that the tiny little but of inside info I have posted does not come from any of those sources. I don't even ask those sources for information. I would never compromise a source, and the connection I have to two star players on this team is well guarded and as such I have shared insights in a way that could never cause a problem for those two players.

I never hide behind anything - if I wanted to hide - how hard would it be to start a new account. Cougarbib just means I am one if the two or so people that actually liked the bib style uniforms. Me and whomever designed them. Nothing more sinister than that. I have no hidden agenda. Respect the coaches. Respect the players. Be reasonably realistic and be accountable. Remember the past the way it was - otherwise yes, I annoy people that want to think things were perfect back in the day by pulling up actual factual win and loss records for example.
