Joe DuPaix BYU's new Slot Receivers/TE Coach

Surprisingly move by BYU to go with a guy from Navy?



Looks like he has very close ties to Brandon Doman.

This is how Doman and he know each other:

DuPaix grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and played football for his father, Roger, at Skyline High School. As a senior, Joe was the state MVP and led his team to its first state title of the 1990s. Prior to arriving at Cal Poly, DuPaix was an assistant coach at Riverton High School in Salt Lake City. He had also previously coached the quarterbacks and receivers at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

So Doman hires friends, buddies, favor? Not uncommon among coaches, but doesn't Navy run run run run run? So I imagine our TEs will be doing a lot more blocking, fitting for a group of guys who can't catch. I'm still crossing fingers for a legend for other positions as this hire doesn't get me excited in any way.

I heard that he is a real fireball. Should be good for recruiting and fits in with Bronco's plan.

The Mustangs finished sixth in the country in scoring offense (39.3 points per game), fifth in rushing offense (272.2 yards per game), 13th in time of possession (32:25) and 48th in passing offense (214.9 yards per game).



In 2006, Cal Poly was ranked No. 23 in rushing offense, averaging 182.82 yards per game, and averaged 22.5 points per contest. The 2005 Mustangs finished the year 20th in the country in rushing offense (207.38 yards per game).



A quarterback for Southern Utah University in 1996 and 1997, DuPaix set an NCAA Division I-AA individual rushing record for yards by a quarterback during the 1996 season (1,246 yards). Southern Utah was ranked first nationally for team rushing in 1996 and finished second nationally in 1997. As a senior, he earned I-AA Independent Player of the Week honors with 218 yards rushing in a game against UC Davis."

Sounds like Doman and Young, gutty and aggressive, will that pay off for TEs? They could have saved $$ and hired CL for 2-for-1 deal, but hey if he's Bronco-like, i can get on board.

Chad will volunteer his time for free so why waste the spot?

If he is WR/TE position coach - that would seem to indicate that Higgins is out and there is one more hire to come at minimum.



I am glad to see some experience mixed in there along with some upside potential. Played QB. Sounds like he was OC at a small school before Navy.



So what is Bronco saving that slot for. My Ute buddy with Ute contacts thinks ARod is coming to BYU as receiver or QB coach - but that was prior to this announcement and he is on vacation and probably just reading Ute Corner or Ute Red or Ute Board or whatever it is that Utes read. He claimed no inside info - just Ute speculation based on speculation that Chow is coming to Utah - he expected a Chow announcement today - I haven't seen one.

He's the slot-backs coach at Navy--the equivalent of the vacant "inside receiver/tight ends" position that Anae held in conjunction with his OC responsibilities, so I don't think we can read this as "Higgins is gone" yet. Maybe this is a harbinger of a flexbone formation with Riley under center as Heaps redshirts next year? ;) :crazy:



We'll see at least one more offensive coach leave in the near future, and maybe Higgins too, but this hire doesn't do anything other than fill the other part of the Anae void.

I'm just going to have to have faith in BM and BD on this one. This wasn't what I expected. Still interesting that there has been no official word from BYU that the current WR's coach is even out.

DuPaix won't be hired as a wide-receivers coach. He is a slot-back coach, so he is presumptively coming in as the inside-receivers coach (tight-ends and slot receivers)--the position group for whom Anae was responsible. He is not taking Higgins job, just filling the rest of the void after Anae.
