Crowton fired from LSU

Looks like another coach with ties to BYU might be looking for a gig.

Well he's not coming to BYU. EVER AGAIN! Hope he finds work, perhaps with Anae, imagine those two together.

Well it didn't take long for Crowton to land on his feet again. According to reports Crowton has been offered the OC job at Maryland.

Crowton will be a head coach again, and probably do ok at it.

Nope. That would not be a good idea for any programs that have tradition spirit or honor.

On a personal level--I like a lot of things about Crowton. He seemed humble and friendly and in one brief interaction, he was approachable and patient. I know that doesn't make up for all of the mistakes that he may have made as a HC, but I wish him well personally and professionally.

I met coach Crowton a few times when I was at BYU. I thought he was very nice and quite friendly. It didn't work out at BYU, which was too bad for us and him. I wish him well. Sounds like he is going to Maryland. Good luck.

Yeah, I was glad when he left, but he seemed like a genuinely good guy. Not sure why everyone is so adamant about remembering all the bad about him.

Crowton is a good man and a good coach. He did what he thought was best for BYU. Unfortunately what he thought was best for BYU was wrong. I hope he does well wherever he is.

I am glad to see coach Crowton land on his feet. while things at BYU went south due to player issues off the field, and performance on it, I wish him well. Gotta pull for a fellow Saint, unless they are playing BYU.

I wish Crowton could finally find a place to settle down. I thought I moved a lot growing up, with my Dad being in the Army and all, but Crowton has coached at the following places:

1982 Brigham Young

1983-1986 Snow College

1987 Western Illinois

1988-1990 New Hampshire

1991-1993 Boston College

1994 Georgia Tech

1995-1998 Louisiana Tech

1999-2000 Chicago Bears

2001-2004 Brigham Young

2005-2006 Oregon

2007-2010 LSU

2011-present Maryland





That's 10 different states and at least 12 different domiciles. That's a lot of moving.

Crowton was a classy guy and just didn't have all that it took to be a successful head coach at BYU. I think he's a fine OC and I don't know if it was his play calling that was the problem at LSU because I didn't pay enough attention to them because I don't have any real love for any SEC team, but I don't think he was especially successful as an OC at Oregon and left before he would have eventually lost his job there.

Crowton also had things slowly turning the corner at the end - made me wonder at the time if given time, he might have gotten the ship righted. Bronco righted it pretty fast, and was clearly a great move and coach for BYU. There is no reason to hate Crowton, Chow, or Anae. They gave their all for BYU. In the end, it didn't satisfy fans and administration enough and changes were made - but I don't think any of them are bad people.



OC is a hot seat. Roger French demoted to position coach to make room for Chow as OC and French eventually left. No hatred lingering now, though - possibly because he didn't make it big elsewhere that I recall. Lance Reynolds demoted to position coach and stayed. No hatred lingering there - possibly because he took his medicine and stayed as a position coach. Tollner apparently even got demoted before he left. He had some brief success at SDSU and USC before disappearing into oblivion and I did hear some hate for Tollner over the years. I have never heard any hatred of Scovil and it seems he left without being run out of town.



So other than Scovil who left without being run out of town iirc, and Reynolds who took his lumps and stayed, and French who took his lumps and faded from the scene quietly, being OC is tough business at BYU. I hope Doman works out better than any of the others. I hope he gets renowned as an offensive genius like Scovil, but stays instead of leaves, never has a big rebuilding year to deal with (on either side of the ball because the offense is expected to carry the defense at BYU), and gets promoted to HC, becomes a legend, and he and Bronco get some large structure somehow named after them. I really do. But look at the odds. WoW. I will commit and promise right here - I will never be a Doman hater - no matter how thingns go - he is a great guy and will give BYU his all. Count on it.

One thing that has followed Crowton wherever he has gone is rotating quarterbacks. It seems he hasn't learned his lesson after 20 years of coaching. Hopefully Bronco has learned his lesson in that regard after last season.

One other thing that hopefully followed Crowton was his son. I don't know how many of you remember the year or so after he was forced to resign and his son used to come onto CougarBlue and wailed the blues and attacked just about everyone. I can't remember his name, but you have to wonder if he is now preparing to lie in the wake of those that could disparage his father for now having left LSU in another situation where he might have been fired if he had not "resigned".

If I were only a so-so OC I'd move around a bit for 500K per year. The way I see it he's been exposed in the PAC10, SEC, NFL and will be after 2-3 years in the ACC. He still has 3 big conferences left to go after the ACC so he could be pulling down the big money for another 15 years.

I wouldn't say exposed - but he obviously got exposure. When rumors come out that you might be getting canned and you have a new job with a BCS team in less than a week - you have a pretty good resume. And I am pretty sure that Maryland has seen LSU on TV several times and Oregon several times before that. Personally, I don't like LSU or Oregon, but find it ironic that people post like Crowton is a loser - exposed OC, when Oregon hired him, LSU hired him, Maryland hired him, and some other places will hire him before he is done. It is the life of an OC.

Answer - either there never has been one, or it was way before 1965 when I started paying some attention to BYU football. DC is a much easier path to HC at BYU. Lavell edwards - Bronco Mendenhall - I rest my case. If you are an offensive guru and wan tto be HC at BYU, you better be OC somewhere else and hope to get recruited here as HC - Gary Crowton. I really hope Brandon Doman changes that 40+ year paradigm.

So it has only been the last three programs but here is how I see Crowton's progression as a HC/OC. Year one great. Year two so-so, year three poor. I think that he will do well (financially) within that paradigm for the next 10-15 years and even have a few years where he will have success in terms of offensive production. It just goes to show you that you don't have to be the best at what you do to become wealthy or be considered successful. Thank goodness for that or I don't know where I'd be.
