TV Died

So the TV just died. Anyone have any thoughts on nice replacements?

What size are you looking at? I'll give you the CR best buys. I'm partial to Samsungs.

50" and above.

LCD or plasma?

LED LCD

Sony Bravia KDL-52NX800 (~$2400) -- scored a 78 in CR--double the frame rate of everything else (240 vs 120), average viewing angle, everything else is above average or excellent.



Samsung LN55C650 (~$1700) -- scored a 76, only thing keeping it from best buy was a less than average viewing angle. Above average sound quality, excellent everything else.



Vizio VF550M (~$1330) --CR's "best buy", scored a 68. "Average" in sound quality, ease of remote use and versatility, above average in everything else.

Amazon only has used or refurb'ed Vizios.

Anything on LG models? I've had good luck with them in the past.

The only LG's they tested over 50" were plasma....no LG LCDs over 47".



LG as an LCD brand has a repair rate of 4% of all TVs being taken in for repair. That's #10, but the top brands (JVC, Sony, etc) are at 2%. Vizio & Samsung = 3%, so I think the difference might be negligible. It's not like Mitsubishi at 11%.

Me too. I've got an old (5+ years) CRT widescreen Toshiba. When it dies I get to completely redo all of the a/v equipment in the living room. But until then, my money goes to other (less exciting) things :blush:

I finally got rid of our 19" Phillips "flatscreen" (still CRT) that we bought when we got married 4 years ago. It was the store display model and we took it home after using the wedding gift cars at SEARS.



I sold it for 30$ on CL and went all out and bought a 75$ craiglist Sony Wega from some people who were having a kid and didn't have room in their tiny apartment. Sony KV-36HS420. I got it because it was enormous compared to our old TV (with our tiny living room, it's like having a movie theater screen), has 720p HD (impressive, I know) and had a HDMI input which I can use thanks to my old motherboard frying and getting a new HDMI compatable motherboard! Next year I'll be able to get most BYU games on ESPN3 courtesy our internet provider and BYU.tv streaming live. Match made in heaven. The best part of it all was that the new 36" tv came with a tv stand that I didn't need since it fit perfectly in our armoire. I found out that the stand alone was worth about 300$! So I sold it on Amazon for 190 and spent the better part of a night making a box to ship the sucker in.



so hawkwing, sno etc, I guess all I'm saying is I'm jealous of your spending power. :P Enjoy whatever you get, don't think too hard about it or it will never be perfect!

Strangely enough the TV resurrected last night after taping the podcast (maybe it was the power of kitic77?).



So it looks like I can save my pennies to buy something nice for CougarCorner instead.

But I do agree with you. I'm one of the few people I know that actually has a library in his house.

I just ordered Sony's 55" LED (model 55EX710). It's being discontinued so it's $800 off. Problem is it's sold out everywhere close to me so I had to order through Sony's website. The 55" 3D ready TV is about 1800 right now too. I think they are about to release the next models on a lot of their TVs soon because when I called bestbuy every tv I asked about they said was sold out and being discontinued, hence they are all on sale.

I don't know how their TV selection is, but tigerdirect had some smokin hot deals on TVs a few days ago. Might want to check them out.
