Ben Cahoon has applied @ BYU

The day after Mendenhall called five offensive coaches in for a chat after the New Mexico Bowl, BYU posted on its official job site openings for an assistant football coach plus-one. Since that time, there have been the same serial applicants, plus some new ones. Former all-time receiver Eric Drage told me he applied. Former All-CFL receiver Ben Cahoon is expected to retire and has applied. Folks at Timpview High believe head coach Louis Wong will be interviewed.

I can confirm that Louis Wong has applied for a position.

I would love to see Ben Cahoon hired as receivers coach. He would settle for nothing less than perfection when running routes. Speed helps, but precision on routes is the primary key for a receiver. That's what made receivers like Austin Collie so dominant despite their apparent lack of speed. Precision and crisp routes makes up for speed. Not only will he make sure they're running crisp routes, he'll make sure they don't friggin drop the ball without there being heck to pay for it. Cahoon would clean up the receiving corps that's for sure.

I might be remembering wrong but I'm pretty sure AC was dang fast. Yes, he ran crisp, clean routes, had good seperation moves but he could flat out run. Yeah, he's not DeSean Jackson but how many players are? Collie was/is great because he runs great routes and he has adequate speed for the NFL.

With Ross and Cody on the edges, with their speed and height and Cahoon (we'll see) as their coach, demanding perfect routes and hands... wow, can't wait.

I'd love to see Dradge as well. Either of those coaches would be better than the current.

Collie is fast, but he's not a burner. He has what we refer to as game speed, where he appears faster on the field during a game than his recorded 40 time would indicate. A lot of his advantage there is due to his precision in running routes. As I said before, it helps compensate for pure speed. Speed can be deceiving. Everyone demands it, but it isn't everything. That's why Bronco is always pushing for position mastery and execution at a higher level, because those are the things that makes a football team great.

Don't get our hopes up about another coach coming, i am still trying to get over not having Ty Detmer on the coaching staff. People here maid it sound like it was a done deal.

Collie isn't flat out fast at all, he just has a ridiculously quick initial acceleration and deceleration. It's this specific gear changing that makes him so dangerous and good. Precise routes with the ability to change gears/directions quicker than others is what makes him amazing despite his lack of top end speed.

He says he is considering returning to Montreal for another season. He has been working out and could have a few more years left.

A few million or 50K? Hmmm...Well that's a toughie. Plus, if I was Cahoon had that choice, and BYU wasn't working to convince me otherwise (not beg necessarily, just work) I'd stay as well.

I don't know about a "few million". One doesn't play in the CFL for the money generally. The salary cap is about 4.25 Million for the entire roster of 42 active players plus 4 reserve players and a 7 man practice roster. Cahoon probably makes somewhere between 100-300,000 a season. Still he will be taking a pay cut to become an assistant coach if that is his plan.
