Kelly Poppinga Promoted to LB Coach

I wanted Poppinga to get his own thread, it's a big move for him.

“Kelly is a bright, aggressive and skilled football coach,” Mendenhall said. “He has demonstrated as a player and now as a coach that he demands excellence of himself and others. Kelly did an exceptional job this past season when asked to step into the role of coaching our outside linebackers and I’m excited to have him continue in that position.”

I can only remember him playing big against tcu and utah, he's the right guy for the job, especially since we have ability and talent now.

Do you know the accounting for open coaching Slots

Hill was fired - 1 opening

It seems to me that someone was promoted from grad Asst status back then and used that slot - but I am not certain

Anae resigned - 2nd opening



Doman promoted - no change because he is already filling a slot - plus 1 minus 1 equals no change



Popinga uses one slot

Was the other slot already used last fall? If so, D or ST has 1 more coach than before plus Bronco's attention and offense will be doing with less



Or do we still have one open slot.

Popinga was a try and buy from the time Hill was fired and based on results warrants this opportunity in my opinion.

I love both of these moves. Bronco is looking to create a culture there, and to this point hasn't made it. KWhitt up at Utah is light years ahead in this department. Coaches can't scratch their butts unless it is the way that Kwhitt told them to. When Kyle sits down to pee, they all have to sit down to pee.



I would imagine that if Kelly sticks close to Bronco, he will be raised up to be the DC, in much the same way Bronco tried to do with the egocentric moron, Hill. In 3-5 years, if Kelly plays his card right, he will be looked at for the DC position. (If we haven't gotten a DC replacement by then.)

Poppinga took Hill's spot, Anae's spot is still unfulfilled. Therefore, there is still a coaching position free on the offensive side of the ball. Someone mentioned there was a presser at 5...hope they say something good.

Iirc there was shuffling of grad assistants and maybe a promotion back when Hill was fired, but Popinga was part of the shuffling. Do you recall who the other part was? Or am I recalling incorrectly?

Pops was moved to coach LBs, but he was still a grad assistant. They've just given him a pay-raise and a longer term contract than he had as a grad assistant.

When Hill was fired, Poppinga was promoted from grad assistant to linebackers coach. Coach Howell was moved from linebackers to secondary. This promotion just makes that move permanent, so Poppinga replaces Hill and we still have one coaching spot open.
