So no Detmer. I was wondering how that was going to work out. This doesn't mean that coaching changes are done though.

Does this mean that Cahoon and Lewis are in the works? I hope so. Nothing against Higgins, but Cahoon and Lewis are a MAJOR upgrade!

This makes sense - you may recall that I posted that Doman would be nuts to give up direct responsibility for turning Heaps into a Heisman winner. Now Holmoe needs to do his part and give Heaps, Doman, and Bronco a manageable schedule because elitist bias will not allow a QB from a non-AQ school to win the Heisman with more than a loss or two.



Heaps needs a home field shot at a major power like Detmer got VS Miami and follow that with a manageable schedule, and do not play at Hawaii until the award is secure.

I'm excited and relieved its finally official. Also excited to learn soon who is going to stay and who he brings on to help his staff. I'm anxious to see not only how he responds to the challenge with play calling but also how the players react to him. Everything that I have ever read is how much they love the guy and how they respond to him in a similar manner to BM. Is it really another 8 months before the Ole Miss game? It can't come soon enough. Here's to the future...

Talo is tweeting that there is a press conference at 5:00. Does anyone know anything about this? Are they announcing a complete staff then?

Too much? I think most people believe that Doman will not change the offense much compared to its current structure. If that is the case then I definitely think he can do both effectively. The question I have is why do we assume he will keep things the same? Doman played and was very successful under a completely different offense. Isn't Doman much more aggressive than Anae in style? My guess is that there will be some changes and if that's the case I'm concerned about him doing both jobs.

Well - if Higgins goes that would make room for one of them and I have lost track of whether Popinga was already accounted for, or he used Anae's slot.



Anyone clear on the accounting for slots since Hill was fired and Anae resigned?

That gives us two slots. Doman does not use one of those because he already had a slot. Popinga uses one of them. It seems that someone else was promoted right after Hill was fired and used the other slot - but I don't recall that clearly due to the grad assistant status coaches not counting the same way.



If both slots are now used, we have shifted one coaching headcount to defense and offense has to make due with one less for now.

I would guess it won't be a problem for the starter and starting offense... but I worry that the backups might not get appropriate attention.



It really comes down to who else is on the staff.



We return the bulk of our offense, so it's not like they don't know the drill already.



Would they consider Detmer for co-OC or possibly did Doman not want to share the load (or the credit).



I expected Doman for OC from minute one, I'm really more interested in the other spots.. (i.e. cahoon, lewis, reynolds, higgins, weber, wong etc. etc.)



BTW - The OLBs are going to love Poppinga if they dont' already.

I think the strain on Doman can be mitigated if at least Reynolds and everyone else returns or maybe except Higgins if Doman is not sold on Higgins.

You would think so. Especially for a new oc.

Wow, Completely surprised by Domain also keeping QB slot. I personally feel it's a mistake and to much for one person to take especially during game time. Hope they prove me wrong.

I'm kind of worried. Maybe they'll bring in an additional offensive coach to provide technical/logistical assistance in some way.

1. New Offensive Coordinator - Doman needs to focus on his job & not be side-tracked with QB Coaching responsibilities.

2. Essentially new QB - not "raw Freshman new". But still new & developing. He needs TLC & attention to evolve quickly & reach his potential.

3. You want to get BYU's powerful offense back on track. A QB coach would be a great help - to help with the "heavy lifting" that needs to be done prior to the 2011 season - so we can blast the season open from the "git go."

Someone has to double up on responsibilities, if you hire a QB coach so Doman doesn't get "side-tracked." So do you plan on having Coach Reynolds coach RBs and WRs (a position he doesn't know)? Or maybe you can have Weber if he comes back coach OL and TE? If Higgins stays does he take WRs and another position group?



The OC and QB need to be on the same page. It's the QB who executes the offensive gameplan. It's the QB who runs the offense. I see no problem with Doman doubling up and taking on more responsibility. And more responsibility is what he wanted or he wouldn't have applied for the OC job.



Maybe Anae's offensive problems stemmed from the fact that he didn't coach his QBs? That he didn't spend enough time with the QBs so the didn't really understand what he was trying to accomplish offensively. Just a thought.

Doman will be very popular with the players and IMHO will get a reasonable honeymoon period from fans and players while he cuts his teeth and learns from his mistakes.
