Pattern Analysis suggests Doman becomes Asst Head Coach

This is a stretch - but see if you see a repeating pattern in recent and current events

1). Popular HC and unpopular OC have a good run but then tougher schedules, rebuilds, take toll

2). Popular HC helps unpopular OC land on his feet at BCS school as some vocal fans celebrate his departure - Chow

3). Popular HC promotes internal candidate to OC but it does not work out well enough - Reynolds

4). Popular HC retires as some vocal fans celebrate departure after 6-6 Utah win but no bowl - Edwards

5). New HC brings new staff and philosophy as we wander in football wilderness

1). New popular HC and unpopular OC have a good run until tough early sched and rebuild 7-6 season with bowl win takes toll

2). New popular HC helps unpopular OC land on his feet at a BCS school as some vocal fans celebrate his departure - Anae

3). New popular HC promotes internal candidate to OC - Doman

Well let's hope Doman breaks the pattern because now would be a really bad time to wander in the wilderness after Bronco resigns after making Doman OC and then Doman becomes assistant HC to the new new popular HC that would succeed the next wilderness HC.

In this break the pattern scenario, Heaps is to Doman now as Doman was to Reynolds in 2001 even though Heaps is not a senior- but who is the new Luke Staley? I guess Heaps will need to make due with JJ, Kariya, Juice, and Phillips as Staley by committee, but maybe Juice is Staley sans the experience of a senior. Hopefully the kids stay healthy all season as 2001 would have ended nicer with a healthy Staley.

This could mean Heaps will be OC eventually, after a stint in the NFL and one as BYU QB coach under the next popular HC after the first rebuilding season.

I still have not spotted the pattern of the DC

TIC - I think

TIC I think

Interesting TIC post. If it weren't TIC you could poke about a million holes in it. But since it's TIC, I'll let it go.

Since its TIC, I wont say that "you are using too much of the soon to be new california state plant."

Sorry, don't see the pattern. Bronco hasn't stopped recruiting the last three years, like Lavell did at the end of his career.

Lavell didn't want to go recruiting, he was getting old. Chow was like Anae and didn't like recruiting. That's the pattern I see.

Bronco does go recruiting and Doman likes recruiting. BYU is very stable and trending up. Where as 10 years ago, it was unstable and trending down.

I don't recall whether Lavell quit recruiting. What I do recall is that after 1984, BYU took increased heat about SOS on the one hand, but occasionally started beating Big Name programs for highly touted recruits.

As the years went by, BYU started scheduling up including 13, 14, and even a 15 game season with kickoff classic type games Vs A&M, Florida State and others - climaxing when Detmer went 0-5 from Heisman Day to week 3 of his senior season. It seemed to me that this took a toll injury wise and loss wise.

I will check the schedules but I think you will see schedules like 2010 and 2011 and 2fers, etc.

Anyway - I worry about BYU overscheduling at a time when everyone else is underscheduling.

A 6-6 record in '00 followed by three losing seasons in the next four suggest the talent level was both lacking and underperforming.

4 OOC games all what would now be BCS quality. Also played AFA in about week 3 and lost.

@Florida State - loss

@Virginia - won a squeaker

Mississippi State - loss

@Syracuse - loss

@AFA - loss

Also lost to CSU and SDSU but upset Utah in Lavell's final game. The lethal Doman / Staley combination emerged in the last two weeks or so of the season which finished strong.

Are you forgetting the 2001 season, that after much fan ado about the cupboard being bare, went 12-0 under Crowton with the bare cupboard, until Staley broke his leg Vs Mississippi State with cowbells clanking in the road game postponed due to 9/11.

UW - win

Virginia - close loss - high scoring

@USU - trap game with OT win

Cal - win

It goes better when we get 3 VS 1 OOC games. We started out 8-1 and ended on a 3 game losing slide going into 2000. Did injuries take a toll? Anyone remember what was going on re QB? Clearly QB became an issue which did not get resolved very well until Doman emerged in game 10 or so a year later.

Too bad Virginia wasn't SJSU and the Bowl wasn't a 6-6 UTEP team on a 5 game slide which woulda produced 10-2.

Featured 9-5 ie 14 games

@Bama - road loss

ASU - home win

@UW - road loss

Murray State - a home win

@Fresno State - road loss in conference game - I was there

Then we lost to AFA in Las Vegas in WAC Championship game - I was there

Then we lost Bowl game - 6-6 UTEP team on a 5 game slide would have worked out better

In conference 1 loss - title game appearance - OOC too many tough road games

I forget who the QB was - but the pattern is - no NFL QB bs tough OOC schedule is not a good thing

It wasn't so much OOC that killed us in this 6-5 season featuring a narrow win over USU, a loss to UW, and a win over zona. We apparently had a real hard time replacing Sark in a rebuilding year. Luckily no bowl game even though eligible because the season ended on a slide.

Possibly our best team ever.

Played A&M in August in an extra game kickoff classic - luckily in Provo - I was there - win

Arkansas State and USU balanced our OOC schedule , but we played 1 game too many and played UW on the road. Payback for 1984? Loss

14-1

Overscheduled. Odds just catch up with you when you play 15 games.

The WAC Championship win over Wyoming and the Cotton Bowl win over K- State on New Years Day iirc, were great. 14-0 woulda been sweeter, or 13-0, or 12-0.

Now if you go back to the glory years from 1977 or so through 1984, you will find a much more manageable OOC schedule and A steady stream of NFL QBs, only 1 of which played much before Jr year.

Later, under Detmer, the schedule got tougher - and those were not exactly glory years - see 0-5 string of losses starting @Hawaii on Heisman Day, A&M Bowl, then FSU, UCLA, and Penn State iirc.

I guess that was why I put a ?

More seriously - I just hope we don't schedule ourselves into oblivion. I do not think Anae was as proven as Chow. I don't recall how well Reynolds did playcalling. As always, I lobby for realistic expectations so good people are not lost when unrealistic ones are not met.

I fully support Bronco even though some of his recent comments and his allowing two coordinators to fail scare me a bit. I truly believe he is well intended and highly motivated.

I dismiss any failure I might see in hiring Anae only to let him fail as being what Craig O described and Bronco himself has said in my presence - he was overwhelmed when chosen as HC and relied on advice from others heavily, including the Lord.

I have trouble with him having delegated too much contributing to some failures of his staff, but attribute that to him still learning as a HC and having read too many books about self directed teams and letting managers learn from their mistakes.

The recent quotes troubling me also come from inexperience, but if he is still learning he will become even better.

Pharaphrased Bronco stmts:

I don't know that much about offense

It took us longer to develop our young quarterbacks than I expected

I fear we will be hearing that it takes longer to gel a new and possibly heavily inexperienced coaching staff than he thought.

But we are on a new course, already set in motion, have a loaded gun for offense ready to go if new coaches don't blow it - and a defense with only 1 scary gap to fill with CBs and Safeties.

This team will be very good if too many inexperienced, or some experienced guy with a new scheme and too many road games VS string teams early doesn't set us back too long.

It us an exciting time to be a BYU fan, but a little bit worrisome too.

Hopefully some continuity in coaching will be part of the announcement and hopefully Bronco keeps learning and evolves into master Jedi HC and continues his legacy with Doman and others for a very long time. Hopefully Heaps stays and stays healthy 3 more years and we are blessed with a manageable 2012 schedule.

Happy New Year

No, we had one player. Without Staley we were a very mediocre team. So basically Lavell had one complete stud recruit the final half decade of his tenure.
