Here's my list of potential surprises at OC, because I'm not so sure anymore that Doman really has an inside leg--if any of these guys applied, I think they'd get it over Doman:
Chad Morris
Josh Heupel (okay, so thats a LOOOONG shot)
Steve Shankweiler (a good character fit too, with his experience at the Citadel)
But the one I really think has a chance (and the one I personally hope gets the nod)? Bob Bostad, who is also the only one I know has interest, and is someone Bronco has worked with in the past in his time at New Mexico when Bostad was the OLine coach there. I drool to think of what Bostad could do with our talent.
Do you mind giving us some more information on these guys. I haven't heard of any of them and i am too lazy to look into it.
Morris is the OC at Tulsa, Josh Heupel is a prodigy--currently QB coach and co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, and Shankweiler is the OC at USF right now, last year at ECU and formerly at the Citadel. I started a new thread on Bostad.
Thanks. So is your main problem with doman over these guys experience as an actual coordinator? A little less of an unkown. Do they run similar offenses to the one that we are currently running or do we start from scratch with these guys?
Most of these run similar balanced offenses to what BYU has run the past few seasons under Anae. Morris run a more pass-happy offense than what I think BYU needs, but I think that would change if he got out from under Kragthorpe. People who think BYU is going to get pass-happy need to step back a bit and look at the talent we have log-jamming at RB for the next little while. If we ever want a chance at a BCS bowl game or a championship, balance will be what gets us there. I think that's why Bronco might be looking for someone more seasoned than Doman who has only worked the quarterback position since high school. The big issue with Doman is just that--he has never worked with blocking schemes, run game planning or even with the receivers. His resume is pretty one-dimensional. The wildcard with Doman would be his amount of involvement in game-planning the last 6 weeks of this season.
What I would like to see is one of the above mentioned guys come on as the offensive coordinator, and make Doman a pass-game coordinator where he would have a seat at the planning table. Morris, Heupel and Bostad likely wouldn't be career guys at BYU--if successful here, they would jump at money somewhere else. Shankweiler is approaching retirement soon. So, with any of these hires, Bronco gets someone who has proven ability to do the entire job who can serve as a mentor for Doman to learn all the other facets of offensive coordination and game-planning.
