When was Anae hired, and who did it?

I'm sorry, but I LOL'd at this--not at you or your source, but at how muddled this is getting. Every time someone gives us the "final word" on who hired Anae, the picture gets muddier.

I have talked with one of the people whose opinion was sought in the hiring process, and he told me part of Bronco's pitch to win the job included Anae as OC. I admit that this could simply mean that Bronco already knew about the Anae hire.

Then, we have Harmon reporting (6 years late) that Fred Skousen hired Anae before Holmoe or Mendenhall were even hired.

Now, we have you saying that someone in the know has informed you that Anae was Holmoe's hire before he hired Bronco.

All I really know at this point is that if Anae was hired before a head coach was hired, that is a mistake that should never be repeated at any level of athletics. It's one of the most idiotic things I have heard of--hire someone to coach a full half of the program before you finish your hiring process for the head coach. If that's the case, no wonder Whittingham went up north where he could have the run of both sides of the ball. What decent coach would want to come in hamstringed like that before they even come on campus? Has that ever been done before.

I don't know about college, but Jason Garrett was hired before Wade Phillips in Dallas.

The new Tennessee coach had to keep most of the staff (one of the reasons Whittingham didn't take that job).

It does happen occasionally, but is generally a bad move.

Those two moves are understandable--Garrett was on tap to become the offensive coordinator, and Jerry Jones knew he wanted Garrett as a HC someday--whether immediately after Parcells (who retired 4 days before) or after a transition period (enter Wade Phillips). Garrett still interviewed for the HC position after he was hired as the OC, but evidently was told "not yet." I highly doubt the Anae hire was a "if we ever want a shot at this guy we'd better lock him up right now" move. That said, the Garrett move most closely approximates what happened with Anae, but the thought process behind it had to be different....right?

Tennessee was different too--I can understand a program KEEPING coaches on, especially after the Kiffin debacle, to maintain some consistency with the players and prevent an exodus of talent. Here, Anae wasn't a holdover from the previous administration (I could understand the AD telling coaches, "part of this job is keeping Lance Reynolds. can you do that?"), but instead was a new hire made during the search for a head coach.

I don't know what was going on, but a good reason just eludes me at this point.

My head is spinning on it too; however if Anae wasn't Broncos guy then I get it. It's par for the course for NFL head coaches and GMs to clean house and it rarely works when they don't.

Todd Haley inherited his OC (Chan Gailey, who has LDS ties) when he came to the Chiefs... and fired him before his 1st season even started. The Chiefs sucked last season, then hired Weis and Crennel - and all they did was win their division for the 1st time in over a decade.

It's important for your coordinators to be your hires if you're the head coach. (Maybe that's why Dallas never worked under Philips)

The entire athletic department was in turmoil and transition. Holmoe wasn't even hired as AD until March 2005. The Skousen argument does make some sense. There have been rumors from the beginning that Anae wasn't Bronco's hire. The fact that six year later we're now seeing confirmation of that, in my mind, validates those rumors.

Skousen was a complete disaster. He was a poor administrator with little athletic experience. I could totally see him interviewing Whittingham and Whittingham rejecting the offer based of how much involvement Skousen was implying. It would surprise me to see Skousen saying one of the primary responsibilities would be to keep the football program out of the news. That winning games was secondary. Whittingham is about football and winning. Not about managing images.

Bronco came in with his plan to emphasize the honor code. Make it a strength, not a hindrance. How he was going to have recruits sell him on coming to BYU. This made could have made Skousen happy. If Skousen told Bronco that Anae was also on board, I could see Bronco being ok with it. Anae was coming from an offensive juggernaut school and Bronco has repeatedly said he knows little about the offense. He possibly knew that Reynolds already knew Anae (having been on the staff when Anae played) and as a senior assistant head coach he could help Anae in his new role as an OC.

Bronco and Anae were announced at the same presser. While Bronco was clearly ok with the Anae hire and may have "signed off" on it, I don't believe Anae was Bronco's selection.

I thought that Crowton was hired with the understanding that he had to keep most of Edwards' staff during the first year. Perhaps I remember it wrong.

I don't know how much of a role Skousen played in this, but I'm still perturbed about the way the BYU powers-that-be handled volleyball coach Elaine Michaelis's "retirement"... BYU womens' volleyball hasn't been the same since.

Again, that's retaining people on staff from the previous head coach. Anae was a new hire between when Crowton departed and the new head coach was hired. I understand the retention of previous staff. I do not understand hiring a subordinate while you are looking for his immediate boss.

That is a distinction, admittedly, but I think it doesn't make a difference. Usually the only time I've seen a new HC retain the previous staff is if he was promoted from within.

Looks like Harmon has a different story now:

"This is where it gets sticky. Some say Anae was hired for Mendenhall and he accepted the forced hire.

In reality, Holmoe and Mendenhall flew to Lubbock, Texas, in those rapidly unfolding days of transition between Crowton and Mendenhall. There, Mendenhall interviewed Anae, who was the tight end and offensive line coach at Texas Tech under Mike Leach.

Mendenhall chose to hire Anae."

I stand by my scenario. Why did they go to Lubbock? Did Skousen ask them to go down?

I like what Harmon says at the end: "It was time for him to move on."

And it's time for us to move on. It doesn't matter how or by whom he was hired. He has resigned from BYU. I'll move on.

Personally - I don't believe it matters who hired Anae. He did a good job while @ BYU. The Athletes he produced & helped produce are some great ones. The winning percentage while Anae was the O.C. is very good. This past year was bumpy, challenging & has some real rough spots.

I think there is consensus - hence Robert Anae's departure - it was time for a new voice, input & direction from BYU's Off. Coord. It's a good thing for organizations to change their management from time to time.

I also believe wherever Anae lands (Maryland?) he will see success. He is talented, bright & has good experience under his belt as an O.C. now. Anae is a good man.

I also believe BYU has a great opportunity to make some solid hires & move forward, raising the bar for BYU Offensively. All good.

Happy New Year!!!! 8)

It'll be interesting to see what kind of offense Anae runs at Maryland. I don't think BYU's offense will change all that much next year. But I could see the offense Anae runs being significantly different next year.

Granted some of that will be due to Mike Leach, but I think Anae is going to be excited to get back to the full-on, wide splits, 60 pass attempts game he had while at Texas TEch.

That fits with what I have always been told and what I have always believed. The other versions simply didn't make sense, unless you believe Skousen or Holmoe were completely clueless.

I agree. I think we'll end up seeing a very heavy pass oriented offense, much like Texas Tech days when Anae and Leach were there. If they get the QB and receivers to make it work, we may find some very jealous Cougar fans, who have always wanted us to throw every down.

I have finally figured out why there is so much confusion about who hired Anae.

Anae hired Anae!

First he called Skousen and told him that he and Holmoe had talked and that it was dependent upon him joining the staff that Holmoe would take the job.

Then he called Holmoe and told him that Bronco had contacted him and offered him the OC job as a package deal to get him and Bronco, and wanted to let him know before he accepted the AD job.

Then he called Bronco and told him that he had been hired by Holmoe/Skousen and looked forward to working with him.

Then, when Bronco, Holmoe, and Skousen all got together one of them said, "now about Robert Anae..." and all of them nodded their heads and said, "Yea, we already talked to him, he'll be on the staff as OC."

Thus, Anae hired himself.

Can I do that to get hired as one of the new assistant coaches?

Now that we've figured that out (or have we?) Next question; who was involved in JFKs shooting? This should be easy after the Anae riddle.

I really get the feeling that is was an arranged marriage.
