What are next year's players thinking right now?

I cant think of a time that I was more excited about BYU football.

I was midly dissapointed by the first half of the 2010 season, but I wasn't distraught because all along I was expecting a down year. Sure, it would have been nice to not deal with the QB fracas in the beginning, but maybe there were some lessons learned that could not have been discovered any other way - more than just football lessons. So, in hindsight the only thing I would change if I could would be to magically put two more points on the board against Utah.

But next year...with what seems to be a perfect storm brewing (personnel developemnt, media coverage, etc.)... well, WOW!!

I need some level headed people in-the-know to try to answer some questions:

Am I being overly optimistic? Will my hopes be crushed?

What are next year's plyers thinking right now? Do they have the same expectations that I have? Will they enter the off season, and spring and summer camps with more intensity than ever before?

Do they know...do they believe?

I believe they think they can win at least 10 games next season, possibly all 12. I have no direct contacts so it's just a guess. But if they aren't thinking they can win them all, then they are not the right players for BYU. ;)

Only 69 more days until spring ball!

I would imagine most of the guys are going to have a bcs bowl on their mind.



we will definitely be bowl eligible with our schedule so it becomes poinsettia or bcs next year. they have a shot at the bcs if they can come out strong at the beginning of the year and then not slip up toward the end of the year.

I think it was Kuresa who said he committed to the program, not the coaches. I think that is the right attitude to have. Employees may come and go but your scholarship rests with with the school and nobody else.

Your excitement for next year is well placed. What makes next year so intriguing is the progress and expectations for Heaps, the development of our great freshman recruits, having virtually all of the offense back next year, better defensive players in line to play next year, and the prospect of actually getting an OC who is a good play caller. No your expectations are not misplaced.



I think if Bronco can assemble the right mix of coaches, we could have a terrific year next year. I've said all along that 2010 is not the year to get excited about, but 2011 and 2012 are.



I think the fact BYU is independent next year as another positive element. The players should be excited to shed the shackles of the MWC, the greater TV exposure, the playing of some new teams, all of this will bring greater excitement by the players and the coaches, in my opinion.

They see this as progress. they all knew of the factions and problems within the coaching ranks. They are realizing that the gauntlet has been dropped and coaches will either get on board with Bronco or get off.

They are focused on staying in shape for spring ball and hungry to be focused, organized and well-oiled for early season challenges. They are as excited as we are!! LB's are worried with all that depth, who is going to vie for playing time and are therefore working their butts off. Riley Nelson is either in denial that he thinks he actually has a chance at getting back his starting role or actually has a "real" chance to compete for the starting job or is in reality and no considering transferring to safety or begging for some wildcat plays.

Spring ball cant come soon enough!

If Heaps were to get injured in week 1 or 2 or worse yet - in Spring or Fall camp going ones on ones and maximizing reps to keep all the fans happy - who do you think looked most ready to trot out there vs BCS teams on the road - the guy who did it this year with no supporting cast or the guy who completed 2 or 3 passes with 1 pick in 2010 VS MWC bottom feeders or the guy who never took a snap in 2010.



Stuff happens - so give it a rest and show a little respect.

Unless Lark and Munns are also injured, Nelson won't and can't be the guy.

Do the math. Fans whined all season about Heaps not getting enough reps in Spring and Fall. Bronco has irritated the Heaps camp a bit already by committing to competition in Spring including Nelson.



I am not debating who has the most potential out of the 4 QBs - I am just saying that if Heaps gets enough reps to be ready to play that schedule and leads the team through informal drills, in the early season, Lark and Munns won't be ready to face that schedule.



Bronco clearly sees something in Nelson that you do not see. It was not just because of Anae that Nelson got the reps he got last year. It was leadership and other intangibles - based on the Bronco quotes I read.



We did not see Lark and Munns on the road VS AFA And FSU or Vs Top 25 UNR or un the trap game in Logan when the OL was not protecting and the BYU defense stunk. You may recall even Heaps was nit ready for that. Nelson couldn't overcome all of that single handedly - bur don't assume that with an OL protecting, a running game and identify now discovered, receivers who catch when you put the ball accurately and consistently where itches supposed to be, and a D that carries it's weight, that Nelson could not perform adequately as a back-up - especially early season if needed.



Hopefully Heaps will stay healthy and we won't need to find out.



Personally, I think BYU erred in not giving Lark more meaningful reps in garbage time trying not to run up the score. They should have turned him loose and let him make some mistakes and learn and grow bs the weaklings of the MWC - but did not do it.

If I was a player, I'd be excited to see the changes that might be coming. Especially if I disliked my position coach, or felt a new coach might give me a better shot to see the field because I'd get a fresh start with a new coach with no biases. The HC change would make me worried more than position coach change because that would mean more drastic changes. This stuff is minor. And keeping guys on their toes is a good thing. No complacency.

The only issue I have with the possible perfect season is the game at Hawaii. They change the rules for those games. we still only get to have 11 players on the field at any one time. They get 17 - 11 are in the Hawaii uniforms and the other 6 are wearing white and black striped shirts.

Which brings up the issue of home game officials. I was speaking with a Big Sky ref Sunday. He has good hopes of making it to the PAC12 officiating group this year as they are supposed to expand by two new crews in light of the conference expansion. He also does some local officiating for things like the BYU's Blue-White game in the spring, etc. He said that he had been told that BYU will absolutely not be using any of the officials from the MWC. That makes sense in light of the treatment BYU received from the conference this last season and all the burned bridges by many of their former conference partners.



He said over the last couple of years there has been the consortium of crews that have been mixed with MWC, C-USA, WAC and Big 12 officials, but that hasn't been doing well as it has required some of the west coast members to travel to Florida, Louisina, etc where then they have to add another day usually coming and going. For a Saturday game they have to be present on the Friday for a pregame meeting. If you're traveling from Salt Lake or points further west, for a game in Orlando (UCF), you have to travel on Thursday and you won't get home before Sunday or Monday if delayed. For most of those officials, college officiating is not their only job and while he makes fair money, it is strickly a side job. This individual is a partner in a graphics company in Sandy and can come and go pretty well during the football season, but he said it would have been difficult to have been in that composite group of conference officials and have that additional time commitment at times. In the PAC12 he'll be able to stay on the west coast exclusively.



So I'm not sure who BYU has established as their source of officials, but I won't be sad to see the MWC ones gone, more so for basketball though than football. I don't believe the football ones were anywhere near as poor as the basketball officials.
