Great read:

My favorite part:

"Can Ty Detmer really coach?" a person might ask.

It isn't a matter of whether or not he can do it. It is a matter of whether or not he is motivated enough to commit himself to the challenge at the expense of his well-deserved tranquility on his long-awaited Walden's Pond.

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Tim Hanshaw shares this anecdote of a day, back in Detmer's day, when he strolled through the team's headquarters and walked past an open door.

"It was an experience I had back in 1998 when Ty spent his year with the 49ers," said Hanshaw.

"While walking past the QBs' meeting room, I observed the following individuals sitting in chairs while Ty was standing at the white board with marker in hand: Steve Young, Greg Knapp, Steve Mariucci, and Marty Morningwig. The amazing thing is that he was not standing up at the white board to be quizzed. Instead, he was in the role of instructor and they were learning from him.

"That mental picture tells a thousand words ... additional evidence that Ty was doing the instruction and Steve and the coaches were doing the learning.

"Mooch and Marty brought Ty to San Francisco after they coached him at Green Bay," Hanshaw said. "Marty brought Ty to Detroit when he became a head coach. Greg brought Ty to Atlanta when he got his first offensive coordinator job under Jim Mora Jr., who was the defensive coordinator with the 49ers when we were there."

If Ty Detmer wants to be a QB coach - he would be stellar. It just depends on if he wants to make the commitment. I do not see it. Not at this point in his life. He has earned a break.

I think if he wanted to take a break he wouldn't be coaching high school. And I think he would probably better appreciate coaching D-1 at a place like BYU rather than in HS. He is so advanced it would be like having Einstien teach 9th grade science. It may be fun at first but I think the challenge would leave quickly and so would the desire, but in college he would be getting the best level of players that are not yet pro so it would be a great fit. I sure hope he is offered and accepts the job of either qb coach or OC. I'm torn of which would be better. I think he would be the utlimate QB tutor and on the other hand he knows offense so well he could really come up with some great game plans as well as making critical adjustments. Heck I just love the guy and his spirit so bring him in to coach the kickers for all I care! Just bring him on board!

I say we start a petition - "How about letting Ty be Cosmo for the 2011 football season?"

Ty Detmer could be incognito, he could whisper helpful hints into Jakes ear during the game, and when the game is over - catch a flight home till next Saturday, hang with the family & go hunting!!

They could give him a free pass to the Cougar-eat & a parking space @ the stadium. Perfect!! Brilliant!! LOL!

The more I think about it, the less I think we need Detmer. We don't need a QB coach. We have one. Doman has done an very good job the last six years with the QBs he's had. I don't see why we need to bring in a QB coach when we already have a proven one on staff. We have needs at other coaching positions.

Interesting. I don't think Doman can take credit for alot of what people are giving him credit for and I know for fact that Detmer would be a way better QB coach than Doman could dream about being. Is Doman a likeable coach that gets along with players and does his best??? ---- Sure is but to think him better at the QB position or QB coaching than Detmer is pure folly.

I hope they bring Detmer in at whatever position they can ---- it would be a huge boast to the program.

It sure would be nice to allow Doman to focus on being OC/gameplanning and allow Ty to focus on developing QBs. Do we need Ty? Maybe not. Would we better with Ty? Probably.

I like the way you frame this Mettalicat -

#1 Q: Is it imperative Ty Detmer comes on board as a QB Coach for the Y? A: No - the Cougs will

survive without Ty Detmer.

#2 Q: Would it help The O.C. if Ty Detmer was the QB coach?

a. Irreplaceable experience.

b. Irreplaceable insight.

c. Takes pressure off the O.C. because Detmer is handling it - during practice. The

O.C. is free to look @ other things - see the BIG picture.

d. Add another set of eyes - two heads are better than one!!

e. After practice - Offensive brainstorming sessions (the O.C. & Detmer) would be more

productive. From Detmer - trusted insights, opinons & seeing the nuanced problems.

seeing & fixing the little stuff others - or a multi-tasked O.C. would miss.

So ......... 8) (IMHO)

I've never doubted Ty's capabilities as a QB coach. What I have reservations about is his chops as an OC.

I agree - there are concerns about Detmer's ability to step in & perform @ the Dvi. 1 level. But - I submit, you will be hard pressed to find anyone with his exceptional resume, connection to BYU, commitment to the values & culture of the Y, and commitment to the Pro West Coast Offense. I don't think you will find those qualifications in anyone other than Ty Detmer.

IMHO - the real challenge is not his ability to perform - it is his desire for the job. I don't think it is there. I understand that. He is in a different place now. He has payed his dues for many years. Now it's time to focus on his family, himself, his hobbies. I get that. I'd just like to see him help develop Jake Heaps to become a sensational college QB - and a national Championship during his Junior (or Senior year if he is still around). I think that is possible.

I feel similarly about Doman... I don't know if he has enough experience in different types of offenses to make the necessary modifications.

Since I view offensive coordinator as a position where deep knowledge of offensive and defensive strategies is most important, I feel that Detmer is better suited as OC and Doman is better suited as QB coach. In the end, I'm happy with Detmer on board in any capacity, but that's just my opinion.

It's been 5 years since his NFL days ended. Pretty good break, if you ask me. He has shown an interest in coaching by coaching at probably the worst HS in Texas.

The benefits of having Ty around--even as Cosmo--are obvious. But I think there are some significant potential costs to both sides. Ty's lifestyle preferences have been mentioned, but I wonder more about 1) Fit, and 2) Exit strategy.

1)Fit: Ty's laidback and easy going. Sure he's a competitor, but I don't see him as a "fanatical effort" guy. I question whether Bronco believes he fits with what Bronco's trying to create. Others have mentioned the potential resume mismatch of having Doman and even Bronco being Detmer's boss(es). I don't see that as much of an issue compared to personality fit. That said, I don't know the guy, I've only observed and read. I'm a huge admirer. But I wonder.

2) Exit strategy. It's no slam-dunk that Detmer would be an all-world coach. Do we think there's not another guy out there who could have taken his 0-9 HS team last year and eked out at least one win with them? So if things do go south--or don't go north as quickly as some want--how would BYU handle the inevitable criticism? It'd be really, really tough to fire the guy. You don't do that to your prize Heisman winner. Even BYU's moving Bosco, the NC-winning QB, from coaching to the athletic dpt was politically difficult. Ty and BYU both know that there's a lot of lucrative goodwill from the mystique and myth built up around Detmer. If he steps out of that and into the reality of coaching, he puts his reputation on the line. With the way we fans can ride coaches hard when things don't go well, that risk to reputation has to enter into Ty and the Y's calculus in a real way.

Bottom line: I don't think Ty coming on is a wise move, at least not for OC. Not because he doesn't know his X's and O's, but because the fit isn't great but the risk to reputation (and fundraising) is. QB coach, however, might work. Fit isn't as important there--he could play good cop to Doman's bad cop much like Doman did with bad cop Anae. And Detmer would be sheltered from flaming fans: The OC--Doman or someone else--would be the target.

That said, if Detmer does come on as QB coach and Doman moves to OC, then i SURE hope Reynolds is retained as the RB coach and co-HC. Reynolds does a decent job w/ the RB's, but more importantly, he understands the importance of the run during the LaVell years and advocates for its use now. We'll need that counterbalance with two former QB's in powerful positions on the offensive staff.

These are good thoughts, but face it, it's hard to get rid of any coach. Look at how long UCLA struggled with Norm Chow.
