Coaching Lineup

So my usually reliable BYU source just let me know what coaching changes are taking place:



Doman promoted to OC

Cahoon hired as WR coach

Chad Lewis hired as TE coach

Reynolds stays as RB coach

Weber stays as O Line coach



Could be just rumor, but he has been accurate in the past. I think this would be a great coaching staff, but more importantly, a recruiting superpower! I think these changes accomplish what Bronco wants done, changing the culture on the offensive side of the ball and bringing the offensive coaching staff around to a more bronco-esque way of thinking and functioning.



I would love to see Detmer on the staff in some capacity, but realistically, where would he fit without getting rid of Doman (not going to happen)? Due to limitations on coaching staff, Detmer or Doman would have to replace one of the other coaches and either one would be less qualified than any of the above position coaches at those spots.

My understanding is that Lewis will remain in his position in the Athletics department but plans on spending a minimum of 3-4 days most weeks with the tight ends. I'm not sure if there's a limit to how much time a non official coach can spend with a team, but if there is he's going to be sitting right at the maximum possible amount of time, which does open up a spot on the coaching staff for someone like Detmer to be brought in.

Detmer could always be QB coach.....

If they are allowed that many coaches and Detmer doesn't mind being QB coach then I think a combo of Doman/Detmer calling the plays would be awesome. However, I haven't heard anything about Detmer being in the mix :(.

The posted line-up looks & sounds very reasonable - and it just feels like it will happen. I would love for Detmer to come in as the QB coach. I think it would pay immediate & huge dividends!!



That said - I'm starting to feel it will not happen. If Ty has a hunting ranch he is running in Texas (and hunting is his passion) there is no way he is up-rooting his family from Texas, leaving his hunting ranch & taking on the job as QB coach. Remember - football season is right during Fall hunting season. No way - Ty Detmer politely takes a pass & stays in Texas. I hope I am wrong. Please let me be wrong!!!!

Not to mention his public statements to the Daily Herald that he is not interested in the job...

Is there an NCAA limit to how many official coaches can be on the payroll? E.g. if Doman becomes OC can they bring in another QB coach without getting rid of another full time position?

There is a limit of coaches and Grad Assistants. I wonder if there is any rules for other campus employees/volunteers like Chad Lewis?

"NCAA Article 11: Conduct and Employment of Athletics Personnel:

11.7.2 Football Bowl Subdivision - There shall be a limit of one head coach, nine assistant coaches and two graduate assistant coaches who may be employed by an institution in bowl subdivision football.

11.7.2.1 Exceptions to Number Limits FBS - No individual other than coaches designated to fill the coaching categories set forth in Bylaw 11.7.2 may participate in any manner in the coaching of the intercollegiate team of a member institution during any football game, practice or other organized activity, with the following exceptions:

11.7.2.1.1 Weight or Strength Coach FBS - A weight (strength and conditioning) coach may conduct flexibility, warm-up and physical conditioning activities prior to any game and prior to or during any practice or other organized activities without being included in the limitations on number of coaches.

11.7.2.1.2 Undergraduate Coach FBS - The limits on the number of coaches in this section do not apply to undergraduate coaches."



So where are we at including the defensive coaches? I wonder how strict they are on other athletic faculty participating in training/practices? With the NCAA involved, there probably isn't much leniency.

Did your source say these decisions have been offered? Mutually accepted? Made and ready to announce? Or best guess?



If Bronco is on vacation - how could any decision be made unless they were already made in advance and the "interview for your job" was a sham?



Unless he made Doman OC - and told him to choose his own staff while Bronco was on vacation.



Anyway - best guess or inside knowledge of offers made and accepted?



Not that I doubt much that they would be accepted if offered. Reynolds would be a tiny question mark in my mind but not much of a doubt. Huge opportunity for Doman and keeps him in direct line of responsibility for Heaps - which he would be nuts to relinquish.



I doubt Weber has a better alternative on short notice.



The other two - great opportunity for two totally unproven coaches. How could they turn it down unless they do not want coaching careers.



There is risk here folks - but nothing is without risk - including status qui.



And if it doesn't work - I will start to wonder about Bronco's judgment in selecting a coaching staff. But he would be able to shape a group like this - question will be rookie mistakes - but player experience will be improved unless the new OC decides to put in a new system with inexperienced coaches and a still relatively inexperienced QB and tight ends.



And Bronco will be very focused on his inexperienced defensive coaches.



Past BYU coaching staffs always seemed to me to have a retread or two that wasn't too exciting on paper - experience over youth type decisions going back to Lavell Era. I do not put Reynolds in that category - his credentials are rock solid. I have the least experience re our OL coach - what do you all think of that choice.



For all the inexperienced coaches on O and D - my only issue is there are so many of them all at once. The change on D is working out OK - but not perfectly - so far.



The offense was already back on par or better than the D IMHO the last few games - more risk in these newbies.



The D had little risk of getting worse with Bronco taking over as DC and the D stinking to high heaven at the time.



Soon Bronco. Make the decisions before you get criticized for being too slow again by the faithful. You should already know who us worth keeping and have a good idea of who you want to bring in. These coaches are no better or worse than they were in 2009 - same guys.

I dont know how reliable this all is, nor if these changes/ offers have been made. I only have a solid rumor from a previously in the know source. The changes make sense to me. At first I thought the timing was a little suspect, then I started to figure it would probably be the nice thing to do having some of these decisions made before Christmas so most of them can enjoy their holidays without too much anxiety.
