We got Carlino, our future point/combo

4 years to play 4... likely rs used up from this season. He should be a senior in high school right now. I'll bump the old thread so people can watch his videos.



It's a nice pick up. Hopefully the problem was Howland and not Carlino at UCLA. The kid was a top 10-20 national recruit when he was a high school freshman/soph and some believe he didnt' improve as much as they expected in his junior year, but UCLA, Indiana and others already offered him to come out after his junior year.

I was thinking of posting this, but the news didn't seem "official" yet.



Maybe you know something I don't.



PS - Let me add, this gives me more hope for the future. BYU continues to pull in impressive guards. What we need now is to bring in some talent at the forward positions. Typically we have one or two star players at a time. Hopefully we can get to the point where our entire starting lineup is highly talented. Rose has done a good job recruiting, we just need some big guys now. If we do this, BYU could continue to make some noise...

Seems to me there should be more big talent to harvest just in Utah. The Utes always seem to get centers who can do everything whereas we continue to get centers who can do nothing. What is it going to take to recruit these kinds of guys?

Is this guy really all that good?

I am afraid he will end up being our version of Utah's Henderson or whatever his name was last year.

Doesn't Utah get their centers from Australia? What happened to our Brazilian connection?



I think game planning and coaching is a bigger issue than recruiting when it comes to establishing an inside presence. We've got the horses, they may not be Kentucky derby winners, but they could certainly be used better.

This is pretty impressive. I have a feeling Carlino will really fill a huge void next year. Another positive, I think this will be a great positive for recruiting other top players in future years. Carlino is a huge pick up for BYU.

Agreed. Once Haws gets back, I can imagine a very successful three years of a Carlino/Haws backcourt rotation. Three years! Look out WCC!

As you can imagine Zonie, it's veritable blasphemy to compare any other guard to Jimmer right now for BYU fans, but there is a distinct similarity in their games.



The biggest difference I see between the 2 boys is strength. Jimmer has it, Matt doesn't yet... (How can we be surprised though, Matt should be a senior in high school still)



They both shoot well, handle the ball well and to be honest I'll give the edge to Carlino in passing at his age. Jimmer was not a point to start his career and not a great passer.



The question really is how good does Matt want to be, and is it fair that coaches have said that he peaked as a high school freshman and soph?



Does he want to work as hard as Jimmer did to be great? If the answer is yes, then I'm sold.



Matt was considered a 4-5 star can't miss prospect as a high school freshman, so what gives and why wouldn't Howland use him if he were that good. I mean before the BYU and Kansas games, UCLA was floundering and their 2 guards can't hit the side of a barn.



Then there's the question of a switched commitment to colleges before college, a switch in high schools, and then a switch in college. That doesn't look particularly good, even if it is par for the course in college basketball now.



He obviously chose Indiana wayyy too soon, when he was a 4-5 star can't miss and Tom Crean had just come over from a sensational 10 year run at Marquette to save the Hoosiers from Kelvin Sampson. Turns out not even Crean can save Indiana.



BYU is not an easy place for many non-LDS players (some find it quite restrictive) and considering Matts former numerous stops, I hope he can do well in BYUs atmosphere and improve over his 4 years. Like your video shows, there's reason to think that Matt could fill Jimmers shoes by the time he's a senior here, and just like Jimmer, he should garner playing time from day 1.



How hard is he willing to be the next great combo guard? I guess we'll all find out over the next 4 years.



I'm excited; and I think he's exactly the missing piece going forward, but seeing is believing here.

That was a very creative video, nice. It's really tough to compare the 2 obviously. Was Jimmer all that hyped when he came here? I remember watching him his Freshman year and thinking that he should be (or one day would be) our best player if he continued to progress. We'll see what Carlino is all about here soon.

The other great thing about this signing is how it lays out the future.

The only question on this team, is where does the scoring come from? I think the defense will be better (and it will have to be) but replacing Jimmer in year 1 will be rough. Rogers and Abouo have to elevate their games and our unknown guards need to bring it. Thus far, Jackson Enery has been a disapointment his senior year and we're still 10-1 (Jax won't stay in this slump, he's too good and too strong)

So as you can see, Dave Rose can now really set his sights on finding power forwards, centers, and recruiting the heck out of Jordan Chatman, Jordan Loveridge, Jabari Parker, Nick Emery and T.J. Haws. because his guard line is set for some time without much instant need.



Not many coaches have the luxury of having that much talent and experience (who all happen to be decent students) in the pipeline so that they can concentrate on the recruits they want the most.



I failed to mention that D.J. Harrison intends on walking on after his mission (which starts in a few weeks) and I may have Boswells return on his mission a year late.

That's cool that D.J. Harrison is considering walking on. We'll have a couple brother tandems down the road. Wasn't D.J. pretty good before he blew out his knee?? Also, you didn't include guys like Jordan Loveridge or possibly even Rosco Allen. Just think if you added Jabari Parker to a team with Roscoe Allen, Jordan Loveridge, and DeMarcus Harrison - WOW. Hopefully Parker has high interest in BYU

I think he'll be eligible like Selby was for Kansas, once the 1st semester is over, but apparently he can start practicing as early as this week.

I did include Loveridge in another thread. I know very little about Rosco, though I believe he is quite overhyped and not particularly interested in BYU.
